Verizon Smartphones? (2 Viewers)

Found on Amazon they are offering the following:LG Spectrum - $89.99Samsung Galaxy Nexus - $149.99HTC Rezound - $179.99All are 4G and share similar specs. Anyone have any feedback on these phones? Wirefly 'Schmackdowns' have the Rezound over the Nexus, and the Spectrum over the Rezound. I'm interested in hearing what actual users think about these phones. It'll be my first venture into smartphones, so I want to make sure I'm doing my due diligence.
Very Happy Galaxy Nexus owner here.I was hesitant to move from Sprint to Verizon because I loved my Samsumg Galaxy S2...but I am very happy with the decision. The screen is awesome and ICS is great/clean/fast once you get used to it. I'm extremely impressed with the voice recognition and use it daily. My girlfriend (who's a apple lover) has commented several times on how accurate it is. THe only two drawbacks I've found...the stock battery is not good (but the extended helps a lot and is only a tiny bit bigger)...and the camera is not the highest quality. However, the panoramic shots it takes are pretty cool and the video is great.Edit to Add: Another drawback...the external speaker isn't the greatest either.

Still loving the Rezound. It hasn't gotten the ICS update yet, but it's being reported that it will happen next week. I chose the Rezound because of the hardware specs and the display and it has lived up to my expectations. Call quality (did you know you can call people on these things?) is great too. If you've never had a smart phone you're going to love pretty much any of the modern 4g phones. They all are demanding on the battery so it's good to learn to make sure programs and services like wifi and 4g are off when you aren't using them. Verizon's 4g service is definitely excellent. My phone's internet tests at a much higher speed than my cable modem from my crappy ISP.

Any updates on deals? Looks like I just missed out on the Rezound as Amazon has it back up to $179. :kicksrock:
I think they have a buy one get one on one of the current Androids but I forget which one
Not sure if this is common knowledge or not, but I thought I would pass on this tidbit just in case.

Those grandfathered into unlimited data - The unlimited data being is tied to having a smartphone on that existing line. If you ever activate a non-smartphone temporarily on that line you will lose the unlimited data going forward. So if you ever lose your phone, do not activate a non-smartphone in it's place to get you by until you get a new smartphone...if you do, you will not get your unlimited data back when you active another smartphone.

Also, new lines being added to your plan will not get unlimited data...that one didn't surprise me though.
Yeah I knew about this but that's why I asked them when I make a change to my plan if it "starts" me over and they said no, which is good.I think starting next week they are getting rid of the upgrade discount and you actually have to pay $30
This won't bite me when I upgrade to a new smart phone will it? Any rumors on when the new iphone will be out. I want to wait for it if it's coming out this year.

You should be fine. I just upgraded in February and no changes. However, it did look odd when I did it online because when you switch from 3g to 4g it says the plan no longer exists and they remove it and it looks like you have to pick a data package, then when you get to the next screen it adds back the unlimited data

Since the OneX isn't coming to Verizon, I may do this also.

I just switched from Sprint to Verizon too, and picked up the Galaxy Nexus for $50 with double your data plan (4GB instead of 2GB) through Amazon. Loving this phone right now, supposed to get the latest ICS update (4.0.4) soon too from Google. I did get the extended battery which really improved performance so far while barely increasing size, prob should of been the battery it came with. Very fast and great display. Reception is better with Verizon too. I do miss all the unlimiteds from Sprint, but reception was horrible. I made up for it by signing up for a Google Voice number and downloaded the app, now I get all my texts through there for free.

Has anyone tried the LG Spectrum, or any LG phone? I stopped by a verizon store to check out all 3 phones, and the sales rep said the LG was the worst of the bunch. He couldn't tell me why, only that he had customers returning the phone days after they purchased it. Part of me thinks it was a scare tactic to pursue the iphone or the nexus (as those are the ones he talked up).

All the reviews online say the Spectrum is a solid phone, especially after it is rooted. Curious to get a more respectable opinion on it, but I'll settle for an FBG. :P

I played with my friends LG phone for a few minutes. Hated it. Felt like a low rent phone to me.

Seems like any review I read of a smartphone talks in great detail about how absolutely horrible the battery is.
Smartphones kill their batteries. I pretty much have mine plugged in all the time incase I dont have juice somewhere. If you want all the smartphone power, you sacrafice battery

This was not true for me. My Droid was lost, activated a flip phone until my contract was up (about a month) and then got the Bionic on unlimited data. In fact, they told me to send them my flip phone and they would send me another $100 as a trade in. I did, then bought a bunch of accessories with it :moneybag:

Not sure about the Spectrum, but there were a lot of problems with some other LG phones so that probably hurt their reputation. FWIW, I have a RAZR Maxx and couldn't be happier. I've had probably 8 Androids since the G1 first arrived and this is by far the most pleased I've been a few months after purchase. Incredible build quality, insane battery, and even though the bootloader is technically locked I already have a rooted ICS build from XDA.

I may get the Razr Maxx, that or the Nexus. My incredible is on its last leg. Is the camera any good? Was holding out for the One X, but it doesn't look like it's coming to Verizon.

The phones use a lot juice constantly trying to maintain wifi and 4g connections so it helps to turn these off when they aren't actually being used. Also using something like Advanced Task Manager to kill off programs that don't need to be running is a help. Programs that want to regularly get updates, like a weather or Facebook app, are especially bad offenders. No matter what you do it's best to charge it whenever you can.

Nope most new phones have ICS and the newer older phone are being upgraded slowly.

Droid Razr MaxxLargest stock battery available. from what I hear the phone runs all day with no problem.
A buddy of mine works for the Motorola Droid Verizon team. The next one coming out soon is pretty sweet. Basically a Razr where the screen goes all the way out to the edges.

Release date? Will it have the slide out keyboard? This might sway me from upgrading to the iPhone5.

Inc 4 announced to be coming in the next few weeks. Now it comes down to waiting until the Iphone 5 to compare, or getting a droid sometime this summer.

I've seen some pics and that's my next phone. I haven't heard anything new about it since April.

Verizon falling behind the competition.
How so?
Always more expensive. Other networks usually get 1st dibs on newest tech.
1. Because they have the best network hands down. I'm will to pay for quality2. Seems like it but cell companies don't release new phones at the same time. Only a few months ago. Verizon released the Nexus and Droid Razr Maxx while the other carriers didn't have anything new. Recently ATT and company have released some really nice phones. I expect Verizon to counter with the droid fighter, G3 and Dinc

Galaxy Nexus owner since Jan 1 with grandfathered data (had OG Droid) - no complaints here except the gorgeous screen blows through a battery like nobody's business. Fortunately I normally have a charger handy unless I am on the commute via train each day.

A bonus: since I had gotten a 4G phone vs. the current 3G iPhone, my grandfathered data plan got me unlimited data when I activated the Wi-Fi hot spot feature to use with my new iPad. Since I am paying the $30 a month, I'm using data like it is going out of style. Daily commute now features streaming MLB.TV about three days a week on my way home and streaming iCloud Tunes on the way into office each day. Double bonus: Extends the Nexus' battery life because an hour as a hot spot uses less battery than the Nexus' screen does. (Yes, I do know that there were other ways to setup Wi-Fi without paying $30/month for it, but now I don't worry about how much I use each day and whether I'll get a letter asking me to knock it off).

Brief review of the soon to be released G SIII, fwiw.

With little to go on here, both look like minimal upgrades over their predecessors, and not on par with the X One. It's looking like I should've jumped on the $50 Rezound deal a while back now. :kicksrock:

Verizon Wireless to end unlimited data plan

Verizon Wireless plans to begin eliminating the unlimited data plan it has provided customers who had it before the carrier introduced tiered pricing and dropped the unlimited plan for new buyers last year.

Fran Shammo, CFO of Verizon Communications, which owns a controlling share of Verizon Wireless, first revealed the change Wednesday at an industry conference and it was first reported by Fierce Wireless, an online publication.

Verizon is expanding the latest generation of its wireless network, called 4G LTE. Customers wanting to upgrade phones from their current 3G data plan to use 4G LTE will be required to sign on to Verizon's new data-share plan to be introduced this summer, Shammo said.

The data-share plan, whose pricing hasn't been announced, will provide a limited bucket of data that can be shared among family members or devices.

"As you upgrade in the future, you will have to go onto the data-share plan," Shammo said. "A lot of our 3G base is unlimited. As they start to migrate into 4G, they will have to … go into the data-share plan. And that is beneficial for us."

Verizon dropped its $30-a-month unlimited data plan last July for new customers. But it let existing subscribers keep their unlimited data plans, even after their contracts expired or they upgraded to 4G LTE devices.

For a limited time, they still will be able to do that, at least through the new contract. Verizon wouldn't specify when the change for current customers will kick in. Until then, spokeswoman Brenda Raney said, nothing changes. "Unless Verizon releases more details about this, there could be some customers who might go ahead and try to lock in their current unlimited plan while upgrading to a new phone," says Roger Entner, analyst at Recon Analytics.

Still, the move is sure to draw the ire of "grandfathered" customers who remained loyal to Verizon to keep their unlimited data plans, says Ross Rubin, an analyst at tech research firm NPD Connected Intelligence.

Because the new LTE network is faster, it likely will drive subscribers to consume more data. Verizon's plan to herd all users into pay-as-you-go plans reflects its efforts to generate more revenue to pay for its new network, Rubin says. "They used the 3G network to prime the pump for data consumption."

Sprint and T-Mobile offer unlimited data plans. T-Mobile slows data transmission after 2 gigabytes for users with its basic unlimited plan.

And the hammer drops. All carriers follow Verizon. Look for other companies to follow suit and eliminate all unlimited plans.

Had to come eventually. Hoping Galaxy III comes out first do I can upgrade.
Flapgreen, If it doesn't come out first. What will you do? What phone are you currently using?
Depends on if they allow those currently under contract to keep unlimited data. If so, I'll get the Rezound or current Galaxy. If not, I'll move on to ATT and get the X One. My wife is currently on ATT and has had no problems with reception here. Currently using original DInc

Sounds about right. I use my GFs att iphone 4 often. No real problem. Rezound over the Droid maxx HD. Did you hear about the X1 delivery being held up by an apple patent lawsuit. ATT claims its sold out.

RAZR MAXX is down to $169.99 with a renewed contract. Good deal.

Based on the article posted I may want to upgrade to that to lock in my unlimited data for another 2 years.

Not necessarily. There's a lot of automatic WiFi offload work going on in the industry, which greatly reduces drain on the cellular networks. However, the growth of subscribers and data use may still be to large to keep unlimited plans.

I don't think they have said whether current contracts will be able continue with unlimited data or not.

Yeah curious. I switched in February to 4g with the MAXX - great phone btw, kept my unlimited and hoping my unlimited last a bit longer
