**** Vermeil as the Chiefs head coach (1 Viewer)

Vermeil, whom I like as a person and as a coach, seemed to get a lot of love from the Kansas City fans in his last game as the Chiefs head coach, but are fans really happy with one playoff appearance and zero playoff wins in his five years there? I know you have to look at other factors, but for many, wins and losses are the bottom line and Vermeil, in five years, didn't come close to getting it done for the Chiefs. Either way, enjoy your retire, ****. You deserve it.

I really loved the way Vermeil put so much emotion into the game. People made light of the fact he cried all the time, but it just showed his passion. The offenses weren't the problem in KC, it was a porous defense with no identity.

Interesting that you use the phrase "bottom line". The bottom line in the NFL is $$$ IMO.The Chiefs have had an exciting to watch, competitive team in his tenure, which assures that butts are in the seats and team apparel sells.

Not a success from a winning it all standpoint, but definitely a success at the bank.

Butts are always in the seats in Kansas City and their merchandise always sells well, even back when Kimble Anders was a star fullback for Marty Schottenheimer. :P

As a KC homer I can say this much about this regime:Lamar Hunt, Carl Peterson, etc are great at making $$$, always being competitive-thus keeping up a rabid fan base. Since 1989, KC is in the top 5 in Winning %, no record worse than 6-10, which happened once (2001).This franschise is so well-liked because as a fan its always going to be around late in the season. They stock their teams with Free Agents and veterans, never taking it on the chin for 2-3 years to rebuild. Look at the KC QBs of teh past and thats all you need to see.So, yes Vermeil was a failure, for numerous reasons.1. Sticking with the same DEF players after 2002-2003 and signing Woods, Wesley, Browning, Hicks etc. to new deals.2. Never committing to defense.3. Letting Donnie Edwards go in 20014. And simply because I think it seemed very apparent that the game had passed him by. He would have been great as our OC, but he didnt care about defense, and that was our ultimate downfall in 2002-2005. The defense is showing strides now, but thats because he gave up some personnel power and also because Peterson finally realized the guys he had werent getting it done. Also in this is clock mgmt. and things liek challenges and dealing with the media.FWIW, I would like to see King Carl leave with DV but it wont happen as long as Lamar Hunt is alive.EDIT: What were the fans supposed to do with him retiring? Boo the man who is an NFL legend? KC isnt that type of city where Santa gets booed and other fans get beat up for wearing opposing colors to a game....were somewhat more humble.

No he wasn't a success in Kansas City, but it wasn't his fault. They didn't help him out defensively until it was too late.

I think coaches like Vermeil and Shotenheimer make every game and every play too emotional. I think they burn out their players. I hear that Belichick has gotten emotional before a couple of big games and the players had responded with MONSTER games. I think the key is too stay pretty level and use emotion during key times or else your players won't have anything in the well.

Success for sure.He gave KC a couple of shots at winning the big one and that's more than KC could have hoped for when he got there considering his age. I'll be sorry to see Vermiel go but I think most people are choosing to turn a blind eye to the fact KC is a very old team(all their important players besides LJ anyway) and are already starting to descend. Do you honestly think Vermiel wouldn't have come back next year if he thought KC would be a superbowl contender?

Yes, I do. Heck, he left St. Louis after they had just won a Super Bowl and that was a fairly young team that could have easily won another Super Bowl or two had he stayed there. Vermeil is a different breed than most NFL coaches.

Fair point and I considered that. IMO that was a situation where he wanted to go out on top and did. Nothing could have come close to measuring up to that season so the next year would have been a let down. The KC situation is completely different than that STL sitation. KC has lost Vermiel, is almost assured to lose Shields, with both of them leaving it's hard for me to believe Roaf comes back and Trent Green was always Vermiels boy. At age 36 I'm not sure how much longer Green will remain @ QB. I'm not even convinced he makes it through next season depending on the direction the next regime wants to go. KC is in a state of flux and people don't want to admit it.

but your, as your name implies, a bolt backer, so arent you maybe a wee bit biased? Maybe trying too hard to hate KC?

No, for some reason I've never hated or even disliked KC. Loved watching them when I was young with Bill Kenny/Carlos Carson/Stephon Paige. Liked watching the Nigerian Nightmare and Gonzales is one of my favorite all time players, especially before the foot injury. Liked Marty back when he coached KC. Never liked Carl Peterson however. Now den and oak are a different story. Can't stand either of those teams.
