Vernon Davis... (1 Viewer)

This guy has flop written all over him.
Care to explain why you think this?
Sure. Waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much hype. It's pretty tough for a guy like Jason Pociask to be a flop because nobody has heard of him. He seemed to be a phenom who really saw his stock soar after the season. A "workout" warrior as it were. If all it took was a great physique to excel, David Boston would be a perennial pro bowler. There is more to it than that.

Plus he seems to think he is going to revolutionize the position. Well, if I had a nickel for every guy that shot his mouth, I'd be a millionaire. He hasn't had to line up across from an NFL linebacker yet.

But mostly it's just a hunch.
So you just love to go against what everyone thinks right? Bet you thought Lebron was going to be bust too.
Never heard of him. Does he play for the 49ers too? Look, without fail there is a guy or two who get hyped and bust. It's inevitable. I just happen to think the VD is one of these guys. Are you saying the prognosticators know who will be good and who won't? Or that all players who are drafted with legit Top 10 grades will turn out justifying their draft slot? I just think he's going to be a bust. Does every other person agree that he's going to be great? Is he that much of a sure thing? Is he already on par with Gates and Gonzo? No, of course not.

Whether or not he is juicing, a team with the #32 offense and #32 defense taking a TE with the #6 overall pick in a good draft is an obvious mistake.
It's also the team with the #1 overall QB who looked completely lost last year without a reliable target to go to. It was their only choice.
Trying to cover up your last drafting mistake by making another drafting mistake is how you become the Detroit Lions.
Last time I checked QB's need guys around him to make plays. I guess Emmitt was a drafting mistake to cover up Aikman.
Emmitt was a running back I think.

Look, yes, Johnson was injured in 2005 (but played 16 games in 2004)
Besides missing the entire 2005 season, Johnson has also missed the entire 2003 season and was only able to play for three quarters of the 2002 season. Of 80 possible regular season games that Johnson could have appeared in, he has only been healthy for 44.

That is barely over 50%.

We obviously have very different definitions of what constitutes a "servicable player"

Who watched that college-player skills event this year? When they did the jugs event, Davis sure looked like his hands were suspect. Of course, he came right before Chad Jackson, who caught absolutely everything. But Davis didn't look good catching the ball, IMO.

See CTSU, not everyone agrees with you. :P

For those of us with ESPN the magazine subscriptions;

Has anyone noticed the picture on the back of this months mag? It's got Vernon Davis in an ad for EAS supplements (something about being a train). Anyway, if you look at the picture closely you will see signs of possible steroid use! Seriously.

He has what looks like acne on his shoulders and arms (as well as his face somewhat), stretch marks on his shoulders which indicate either rapid weight gain or rapid weight loss, he is very vascular as well. I mean he looks like a specimen and it's impressive, but I've known guys that were on the juice and they all had these same signs. What is the NFL's stance on steroid use and do they do it randomy or does everyone have to be tested prior to entry to the NFL?

:banned: (roids)
I have stretch marks on my shoulders, I have acne on my back, and I dont use steroids, its obvious you do not workout, because its very common to get stretch my by your shoulders, the main culprit of the stretch marks is going down all the way on bench press.

Not to be nit-picky, but I'm fairly certain vascularity is decreased with steroid use. Most steroids cause the body to retain water and decrease valcularity. The body-builders you see on TV have rapidly increased their cardo, decreased their water intake, taken "water pills" to decrease water weight, avoided salt and increased sugar intake prior to competition to gain the vascularity you see during the competition.

I do agree, however, that the Vernon Davis can do things 99.9999999% of the humans on the planet cannot. This will cause the discussion of steroids to surface. The same discussion happens in baseball (Bonds, Pujols, et al).
:goodposting: However, it's pretty laughable to compare the physiques of Davis to guys like Bonds or Pujols. Davis is a significantly better athlete.
How can yo say Davis is a significantly better athlete than Bonds? The guy can hit a 100 mph fast ball ,chase down a fly ball, and in his prime run like the wind stealing bases. Its debatable whether Davis can catch a pass consistently. I think you may be mistaken.

The question wasn't about Barry Bonds in his prime. Bonds now can barely chase down a fly ball. Bonds is a tremendous baseball player and therefore an amazing athlete, but in terms of athleticism Vernon Davis leaves him in the dust.

:goodposting: I was about to post this about the stretch marks from lifting, and honestly, to have acne on one's back is ungodly common.

Look, yes, Johnson was injured in 2005 (but played 16 games in 2004), and maybe it would have been nice to pick up a new TE, but the last thing the 2005 Niners team screamed was "MAN, WE NEED A NEW TIGHT END!" The WRs were awful (and the best one left), the QBs were awful (and the best one left), the defensive line was awful (and the best DL left), and the defensive backfield was awful (and the best LB left). The only two positions on the entire field where the niners have players with any kind of proven production in their past were RB and TE. And, they could have had Marcedes Lewis with their second first-round pick if they really cared about TE.
If you think that Andre Carter was the best DL on the team then you didn't watch him swich to OLB last year and suck just like he has every year but one, Bryant Young is still the best DL on the team which sucks because he is like 50 years old. They did replace the WR who left with someone better although not great and is there a WR you would have picked at 6. If you think that JP was the best linebacker on the team then you are mistaken. That would be Derick Smith and they resigned him. The team is in bad shape but I think the Davis will be a good pick. The only other pick I could have justified would have been Huff.

:lmao: I've worked out for years and am quite muscular. I have never had acne on my back nor have I ever had stretch marks. Neither have any of my gym rat friends. Maybe you just don't bathe. But apparently not bathing is pretty common. Thank god I'm not common.

Ask anyone that's used steroids or anyone that's researched it. They will tell you that rapid growth (obviously) and acne are two of the most common telltale signs of steroid use. Everyone knows it's pretty rampant in professional sports. Is it so hard to believe that Vernon Davis could possibly be juicing up? I'm sure there are lots of them. I'm just saying from my experience and what I saw on the picture immediately made me think he was on steroids. I could be wrong.

Come on now, rational discussion isn't what we need here!

Whether or not he is juicing, a team with the #32 offense and #32 defense taking a TE with the #6 overall pick in a good draft is an obvious mistake.
:hophead: Lets see:

A team with the worst collection of offensive skill position players in the NFL takes an offensive playmaker, which also gives their #1 overall pick last year--who was not ready to play--at least one above average target.

A team whose current starter at TE has missed 32 of the last 48 games and drafts a guy at the same position. Nevermind the coach has repeatedly stated he wants to run a 2 TE set in 06.

A team with the most 3-n-outs, 2nd worst TOP, etc etc tries to improve their offense.

Yup, an "obvious mistake." :sarcasm:

:lmao:

BTW, where is the thread about Ben Watson and steroids? Seems to me his #s out of college were very close to VD's.
