Very Interesting news out of DETROIT? (1 Viewer)

RB T.J. Duckett could see a larger role in the Lions offense going forward.

Kevin Jones has started the last four games, but has been dealing with soreness in his left foot, stemming from an injury that kept him out of the lineup early in the season. Duckett's fantasy value remains primarily as the backup to Jones, but he could see a slight uptick in carries.

I live 15 minutes outside of Detroit and this is the first I heard of it.

If there is any news to break you would find it here.

The lack of running plays called is coming into question, though.

(KFFL) Detroit Lions RB Kevin Jones (foot) left the team's Week 10 game twice because soreness in his foot. Head coach Rod Marinelli said Jones was sore Monday, Nov. 12, but no more than usual. He is expected to play Week 11.

The Rotoworld clip appears to be taken from these statements by Marinelli at yesterday's press conference and a couple of reports based on these comments in today's Detroit media:

>> On how they will manage RB Kevin Jones with two close games coming up

“Well, he hasn’t practiced a lot and that’s always hard. That’s difficult, because you can’t get on the field and practice a lot. He has to do it with walkthrough’s and at the end of the week we’re able to get him going on Friday’s a little bit more, but it’s hard. It’s just not an easy task, but we knew that when he was coming back. We need to get him going in assignments and technique and all those things and sometimes you have to do it without pads, but hopefully we’ll get him going. It is a challenge now; we know we have two games in however many days it is – it’s tough.”

>> On how Jones feels today

“They felt it’s kind of like how he has been. There is some soreness in there, but I think he got sore late in the game.”

>> On whether Jones’ lack of practice plays a part in his struggles on field

“I just think for a good football player, (he has) to practice. You’ve known me from day one; get in pads and practice; there is skill development for any position. If you’re not doing it, to me it’s really very difficult to play at a high level all the time. He’s a heck of a player and we need to do what we need to do in terms of getting him ready. It’s more difficult.”

>> On if there is any concern that this is the first game Jones has felt soreness during the game and not the day after

“There is no structural damage. You hope he would feel great after every one, but he is not.”

>> On if he will chose either the Giants or Packers game to play Jones instead of both

“If you have one of the two? We will kind of see how he works out during this week. He is tough.”

>> On how Jones feels today

“It’s been kind of as usual, as the doctors say; no worse, it’s just sore.”

Based on those statements, the beat writers for the Detroit Free Press and Mlive.com speculated today on how the Lions would handle Jones in the Giants and Packers games.

From http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2007/...nt_be_easy.html

Jones banged up: Running back Kevin Jones suffered a slight left foot injury the same foot that was surgically repaired last December when he was tackled by a horse collar during the game. Jones didn't show any lingering affects from that tackle on Monday, but it does raise an interesting issue.

Because Jones has needed four or five days to recover after playing on Sundays because of soreness in his foot, it appears he might not be available when the Lions play the Packers just four days after playing the Giants.

If that's the case, it's possible the Lions will use T.J. Duckett more against the Giants and save Jones for the Packers game. Not only will that give Jones more time to get ready, but it gives him time to prepare for Detroit's following game against the Vikings in Minnesota. In that scenario, Jones would be healthy and available for both crucial NFC North battles.

Then again, with so much on the line in the Giants game (see above), the Lions might decide to ride the rapids with Jones as long as possible.

It might be tough sledding in the future, too. Jones suffered a serious left foot injury last season and has managed soreness since coming back. He left Sunday's game twice because of soreness.

Marinelli said Jones was sore Monday but no more than usual. The question is how he might react to playing two games in five days. The Lions host the Giants on Sunday, then the Packers on Thanksgiving.

Will the Lions consider playing Jones in one game or the other -- perhaps resting him against the Giants so he can be fully ready for the Packers, the NFC North leaders?

"We'll see how he kind of works out during this week," Marinelli said.

Good Lord, to have a shot at the playoffs, you need him healthy. Why not treat him like Burress and don't have him practice much?

I didn't see the game - was it an abberration? Ari's D is not playing too shabbily, but they looks like world stoppers on paper.

It's been said more than once that he will deal with this all season.

His soreness is supposedly no more than usual.

Is Tatum Bell still on the Lions? If so, how did he lose his job to Duckett? Isn't Bell >>>>Duckett?
I thought the same thing. I think Tatum may have burned some bridges. He's been on the inactive list the past 3 games now whereas Duckett has gotten some carries.

Nonsense. He is simply sore after he plays... which was to be expected. His coach already said that it is nothing different than he has dealt with after every game.

Tatum Bell has been a regular on the inactive list since they named Jones the starter and he asked to be traded.

Exactly. If Jones were inactive for a game, they'd pretty much have to activate Bell again and go with some mix of Bell, Duckett and Cason -- no idea how that would be split up. Kitna would probably throw 55 times in that situation. As long as Jones is active, it will be Jones, Duckett and Cason.

FWIW Cason did lead the team in rushing this past week.

Code:
ATT YDS TD LG A. Cason 1 1 0 1 T. Duckett 1 0 0 0 J. Kitna 1 0 0 0 K. Jones 4 -4 1 4 S. McDonald 1 -15 0 -15

I agree. This whole thread is a big overreaction.

Even if it is just the normal soreness, there is still the question of how the Lions handle him with only 3 days recovery time between the Giants game on Sunday and the GB game on Thanksgiving.

I thought I read somewhere where Bell is inactice because he doesn't play special teams.
from the Lions link someone else provided, I found this, from a Q and A with Martz last week:What about Tatum Bell?"He's not in the rotation yet, we'll make that decision. That part of it comes down to special teams play. If you're not the starting running back you need to have some significant special teams ability or it's tough to carry them on the active list. It has nothing to do with running ability.''

No need to worry. Jones will be fine.

Its just like journalists. When the Lions are winning and everything is going good, they get to write about all the things the Lions are doing right. After a loss for some reason they want to point out all the problems or issues.

Please trade me Jones if this scares you.

:goodposting: Plus the fact that Jones only had 4 carries seems compelling evidence of something different - that is, if you haven't already decided to go with the pre-packaged narrative that Martz is an idiot. One thing I've learned over the years watching pro sports is that when you see something strange like this, there's usually some compelling reason for it that has to do with injuries, etc. that we don't know about.

True, but KJ did have the longest run... so he had the more "explosive" performance. :goodposting:

It figures since I just traded for him! Lamont Jordan & Larry Johnson first then Reggie Bush get's a concussion this week and now this with Jones.....I'll tell you what...if you've got Clinton Portis on your roster you'd better trade him now!

The Lions minus -18 rushing yards in Week 10 set a modern NFL record for fewest rushing yards in a game.

They struggled early with the ground game and then after falling behind by 21 points in the second half, they ran only three times after halftime including a reverse that went for minus -15 yards. The Lions will face another tough test against the Giants stout run defense in Week 11.

Excellent post.J

IMO Jones Gives the Lions the BEST shot at winning, Duckett is not Jones, as Bell proved when he played he is no Jones, If the Lions want to Win and KJ can deal with the pain & do no more harm, Lions should play him!!

:goodposting: Isn't that what pain injections are for? Cortisone anyone?? :lmao:I am not too worried as no one seems to have any more information on him. If it were a major injury or re-aggravation there would be more news coming out.

EXACTLY, what i was thinking!! And if he can't do any more damage, no harm no foul

I heard the Lions presser.

They said Jones was fine, just the usual soreness he has had 'every" week since he began practicing again. Jones said the foot is 100% healed, but he will have to deal with the soreness after every game.

The same thing was said the first week he played.

This is good news and I expect KJ to start, but this is a wake up call for KJ owners to backup with Duckett if they haven't already. I don't think Duckett will have much value if KJ is healthy, but Duckett could have value if KJ goes down again.
