Victor Martinez to Red Sox (1 Viewer)

Source: Red Sox close to deal for Indians' Martinez

The Red Sox are on the verge of acquiring catcher Victor Martinez from the Indians, according to a major-league source.

The deal is straight-up between the Red Sox and Indians. No third team is involved.

The Indians' exact return is not known, but the Red Sox did not include either right-hander Clay Buchholz nor right-hander Daniel Bard in the deal, according to a source.

The deal almost certainly will end the Red Sox's pursuit of Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, likely ensuring that he will remain in San Diego.

The Red Sox can use Martinez as a catcher, first baseman and DH. When he plays first, Kevin Youkilis will move to third, spelling Mike Lowell.

In effect, Martinez gives the Red Sox protection against regressions by Lowell, catcher Jason Varitek and designated hitter David Ortiz.

Martinez is hitting .284 with 15 home runs and 67 RBIs. He has made three All-Star teams in his eight years in the league — all in Cleveland — including two of the last three years.

News of the deal first was reported by Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

If they didn't get Bard or Buchholz, the Dolan's are going to burn alot of bridges. This is total throw in the towel save money NOW nonsense from ownership to team management.....get the best deal you can right now, no ifs ands or buts, even if you don't get fair return, your job is secure.

1:35pm: MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo says pitchers Nick Hagadone and Justin Masterson are in the deal.
Sounds like a good trade. Boston still has the principal players invoved in the Halladay rumors. What if.......................................................?

Makes more sense for the Sox than it does for the Rays to me...since Boston can play him at 1st and move Youk to 3B.

Since May 29th:

AVG: .205

SLG: .368

If it is Masterson and Hagadone as the primary prospects, then this is unreal. If they have been able to keep Buchholz, Kelly, Bard, Anderson and Bowden then awesome.

Masterson will be missed. Hagadone has potential but he worries me because he has already had Tommy John at such a young age.

Mike (CT)

Thoughts on Hagadone? What's his ceiling?

Rob Neyer (3:13 PM)

Who can say? The kids thrown only 59 professional innings, thanks to Tommy John surgery last summer. He's a strikeout machine who also makes a lot of walks, and there's probably nobody on the planet who knows what Hagadone will be doing three years from now.

Tony Maz reports that the 3 prospects in the deal are Masterson, Hagadone and Brian Price.

HagaDONE. Fitting for many.
BA had them as Boston's #3 prospect prior to the season. With Masterson you are getting two young pitches with a lot of upside. Problem is this team is gonna suck the next two years at least. KC>Clev

Good move for Sox fans, wish the Tigers had a real GM
Go to meat market>buy leg of lamb>give leg to homeless guy>have him beat you with it.
I know I know DD is a top 5 GM :X
Hey if I had started following the Tigers in 2006 and missed all the years I hoped they would win 70, I'd be disappointed also. Going from World Series to just being in a pennant race must suck for a fan like you. gllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

I spelled this all out for you in the Tigers thread and you had no response. You can go back to listening to Detroit Sports talk radio for your baseball information now.

Pretty sure what he meant was that DD can't be that bad since the Tigers were just in the WS three years ago.It could be worse. You could be a Nationals fan.

LaRoche gonna get traded again. :blackdot:
You don't just trade a top 5ish power hitting first baseman a week after you acquired him, do you?
Top 5-ish in what?
Don't kill the messanger, pal. I'm just relaying the priceless insider info Finless so graciously provides to us here in the baseball forum.http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index...&p=10575191
Ugh, I should've known.

Good deal for the Sox , fair deal for the Indians

Masterson is decent but Hagadone could be real good.He carries risk but this could work nicely for cleveland in a year or two

Meh.... doesn't scare the Yanks. It was a pretty decent deal for Boston, but not like them getting Halladay or Lee or some other clincher.

Good move for the Sox but Id love to see how Francona juggles the lineup. One of Varitek, Lowell, and Ortiz are gonna sit on the bench every game.

Will not be a problem at all. These guys are all veterans and not primadonnas. Red Sox have routinely brought in guys to rotate around their lineup and without issue. Plus, Lowell is hurt.
