Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (3 Viewers)

Been trying out the beta of SimCity. Cool game - lots of fun to twiddle and make stuff. The decision to make it like Diablo 3 and have it online only is disastrous, IMO. I have no idea why a game that is the archetype single-player game is going this way. After learning that I went from 95% buyer to 0%. Skipped D3 for the same reason - I don't want to interact with 10 year olds online. I want to be able to play while in a car or in a plane.
Those reasons you mentioned for not wanting to buy it are the same reasons I decided the same, along with poor customer support from EA/Origin. I decided to get Simcity 4 during the Steam sale instead since the last one I had was SimCity 3000. I'm happy with that choice.
Was thinking this randomly the other day with a friend. This incessant need to make games have a multiplayer was bad enough but now they are making it so you HAVE TO PLAY multiplayer in some form is just turning me off to the whole industry. I still haven't played Bioshock 2 because they shipped it with a multiplayer deathmatch. Why does bioshock need multiplayer? EA is the main culprit. Mass Effect 3 was a prime example forcing people to up their war readiness to get the "good" ending. Dead Space 3 has online co-op only. No split screen option available. They have a business model now that basically states no game can ship without some type of multiplayer component. Between that and the free to play movement, I don't like the direction gaming is headed.
You don't HAVE to play Bioshock 2's multiplayer game, but they did incorporate a good story to make it fit with the universe. Unfortunately, the controls were clunky and the game types were too generic to where it couldn't find its own personality and the multiplayer turned into a ghost town quickly. It's already been announced that Bioshock Infinity dropped multiplayer. You mentioned Mass Effect 3 and although I haven't gotten that one yet due to the big O[rigin], I've heard nothing but good things with its multiplayer. The game could've done without it though.I also remember thinking that Assassin's Creed adding multiplayer for Brotherhood was a bad idea, but it turned out to be one of the best additions of multiplayer gaming that I can remember. You can't find the gameplay style that AC's multiplayer brings in any other game. The only problems I've ever had was a poor lobby & matchmaking system.
Mass Effect 3's MP is ok. If It was 2005 and I had never played gears of War, it would be one of the best console MP's ever. But to me it was a lot of the same. On top of that, it was all fighting NPCs. Horde mode was the only mode basically. But the MP isn't what chaffed me. It was the war readiness and the inability to max out the game without having played multiplayer. If your war readiness is at 50% (the standard amount when you start the game) all your war assets are cut in half for the end game sequence. I believe they've changed the amount now but in the beginning it was impossible to attain the required level of war assets without getting to at least 80-90% war readiness. The only ways to attain this were either through and ipad app (which not everyone has a smartphone or a tablet) or play MP. Each match takes about 20-30 mins to play if no one quits. The most you can gain for a win is 2-4% war readiness. You get 1% for a loss if you finish the time out. Nothing for entering the match and quitting. Now this would be ok if not for the decay. Every 12 hours, you lose 2% war readiness. So if you played say 3 matches one night and gained 6% war readiness, you'd have already lost 4% by the next night. Needless to say it took me a full 2 months to get to 100% war readiness before I attemtpted the final mission. I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to get screwed on the "good" ending (which is ironic I guess). The point is, MP might have been something I would have stumbled upon and said "ok not bad, decent time killer." Instead it become a necessary chore I had to do in order to complete my single player experience. That more than anything is what pissed me off about ME3.

The always online model is about to become the standard. It's the ultimate DRM but it's here to stay. Learn to deal with it or you'll have to quit the hobby.
That's fine if I can unhook for a while. I have no opposition to DRM.
I like both, but I can tell you this, I wont be buying any more RPG's that don''t offer real co-op. Not the crappy Fable2/Two Worlds versions either. I want to work together or against each other in the same realm.
And I have zero interest in multiplayer. None. Skyrim was perfect.

Totally agree. Absolutely zero interest in multiplayer, esp. when it comes to RPG's.
You would rather play Skyrim completely alone rather then experience the same exact game, albeit a little harder with a friend?

To me that's the point of those games. The isolationist survival factor immerses you so much more. I couldn't get the same vibe if I played Fallout 3 with a friend. I would lose all sense of immersion and might as well be playing Halo or COD for all the good it does me. Prime example I can think of is Resident Evil 5 and 6. Resident Evil 4 was a master stroke that returned the horror feel to the series. RE5 took that away with one fail swoop by adding co-op. Resident Evil is supposed to be a solo act. Survival horror. IT went from being a "bite your nails and hang on til the bitter end" game to more of a good time hang out with your friends ripping on obvious flaws and cheesy dialogue. I couldn't even tell you the story from RE6 because I was laughing too hard between mine and my friend's commentary on all the stupid #### happening around us.

You can say "why not still play it in single player." However, the game was built for co-op with your "partner." Playing on single player just allows me to have a pack mule to carry my things. Another reason the immersion factor is completely gone. They purposely geared the game for multiplayer. A bad move IMO.

Pretty sure that has a lot to do with RE 5 sucking, co=op or not.

Playing Skyrim by myself is boring as hell and a I fall asleep playing nearly every single time.

It could have but had they went in gearing it towards a single player audience, it may have turned out better. To each their own I guess. Skyrim doesn't do it for me because I'm not into the medieval dragon stuff anymore but I could never imagine playing a game like Fallout 3 with someone else unless they made it an MMO.

Yes. I don't want the developer wasting time figuring out how to incorporate co-op. I want them using that time to perfect the single player experience.

12 month Xbox Gold cards are on sale at Amazon for $34.99. It only hits this price once a year.My link
Letting my XBox Live Gold expire for good this time. I haven't played multiplayer on it since I first bought Assassin's Creed Revelations. I have no other use for it other than multiplayer for a small handful of games. Pretty much all of my MP gaming is done on PC.

Great posting, especially about the RE series. They ruined a great thing.

Ya, I'm a big single-player guy. Even games like Starcraft that lend themselves to multi I am still single-player. The only multi I like are shooters (COD, Halo).

For me, multiplayers games should stay multiplaye and singleplayer games should play single player. 90% of the time, if they try to branch out, they fail horribly.I'm a huge battlefield fan, and it pains me that they've wasted so much dev time on the lousy singleplayer campaigns the past 2 games. Why waste half the dev time developing something that 75% of the players don't even touch and the other 25% only play for like 5% of their play time (before they move into MP)There are plenty of great SP experiences.

Completely agree. Unreal Tournament did this right. The single player was basically a tutorial on how to use the controls. Multiplayer was the game. There are a lot of fantastic games that are just multiplayer: Counterstrike, TF2, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. You can tell they built the games as a multiplayer experience from the ground up. The same can be said for great single player experiences. The great ones were designed as single player only and spent all of the Dev time on just SP. Rarely do we get games that can be entertaining at both. Halo and Gears are the only franchises IMO that have kept the entertainment value for both without detracting from the other (later installments may fail a little at this). Halo 2 and Gears 1 were the best IMO at the combo. COD multiplayer caught on with the young crowd as the new generation of this type. By then I was bored with it though. Gears 2 and Halo 3 were even more monotonous to me. MP in a single player game just doesn't do it anything for me anymore. A lot has to do with the community that play these games. It's not the dying part. Everyone dies, a lot. Everyone loses a lot. It's the complete degradation of humanity that festers in these playing fields that completely turns me off. Every internet cliche from the racist to the homophobe to the tough guy to good ole griefer exists in this world and there is no repercussions to stop them. Screaming louder or getting mad just increase the level of enjoyment they receive. Muting the comm defeats the purpose of playing with other people so what is the point?

:goodposting: This is why I buy games for the single player experience and avoid online play like the plague. No desire to tolerate the 14 year olds (at least mentally) that permeate the online world.

It seems worse with consoles than PC. I don't remember people being nearly as aggressive and hateful when playing UT back in the late 90's, early 2000's. Even TF2 never had as much trash talk as the consoles do. When my friends and I first played Halo with linked up consoles, we had a blast. We got Halo 2 and it was incredibly fun. For the most part, people were competitive and talked some trash but nothing vulgar or over the top. Socom and Socom 2 were also incredibly fun. Trash talk was apparent but nothing usually went over the line. You'd get an occasional idiot but for the most part matches were fun. It was around the time Halo 3 and Gears came out that I started to notice the change. The little kids with no morals combined with the 20 somethings that had the same mental capacity created a much more antagonistic atmosphere. COD4 just hammered it home though. I played that for about 20 mins and realized that this was complete trash. Nothing good would come from playing this game. OF course since the "success" of COD4, they've churned out cookie cutter versions every year. Every year gets progressively worse. I see my 11 year old nephew jump into this world and it's nothing I want to be a part of.

Maybe it's just me, but COD seems way worse than other games in this regard. When I play BLOPS2, just about every single person with a mic is an idiot. I don't recall it being that way with Killzone or Bad Company.Edit: Not that I never encountered idiots in those games, but the ratio of sane adults to racists/homophobes/morons/kids was much more favorable than with COD.

Beat the campaign of Arkham City. I was surprised I reached the end and didn't even realize it really. Whomever said it was right; it was surprisingly short. Asylum had a better story and I enjoyed it more. I'm not sure I feel like getting all the riddler trophies. Seems like a pain in the ###.

:blackdot: Been completely out of video games for years now. But I somehow ran into the Steam winter sale, and I like the idea of downloading a lot more than running out to purchase a disk, and I ended up buying several games. I probably bought some games I wouldn’t normally because they were so cheap, but at least I have plenty to play for a long time now. My one rule is that I don’t buy anything over $10 so all of my games are at least a few years old.Torchlight – Finished it, won’t be buying Torchlight 2Star Wars – KOTOR – Working on this one right now.Far Cry 2 – Runs terrible on my machine (I’m playing on an unimpressive laptop). I play Halo and COD online quite a bit on the Xbox. I learned on day 1, when I heard some guy calling everyone n******, to just mute everyone at all times. It makes online play much more enjoyable.

If he's just playing a little here and there after everyone's in bed, he could be playing Oblivion for a year. That's a hard game to play for short intervals though. Every time I sit down to play something like Oblivion or Skyrim or Fallout, I invariably toss at least 2 hours down the rathole, and most of that time gets spent screwing around forging iron daggers and stuff like that.

Yeah Oblivion will definitely take a while at that pace.

I keep getting tempted to start it up, but I think one massive RPG at a time is enough. I'm going to wait until I finish KOTOR.One question on Oblivion though, how much care do I need to put into making my guy level up in the right skills at the right time rather than just playing? There are a ton of FAQs and discussion about power-leveling or balance-leveling your characters and I really don't want to have to obsess about that all of the time.

That's how I felt. Much more of a chore this time. Bigger sandbox but just makes it feel overwhelming to find all that crap. Asylum was nice in that you were confined to the island with a few buildings and the surrounding courtyards. Had a nice feel to it and the story had a better flow. I enjoyed both but I enjoyed Asylum a lot more.

Oblivion is tricky only in that the leveling system is really strange and complicated. You need to spend a bit of time really understanding what you want for major skills and minor skills, because it is backwards from what you would normally think (skills you want to use a lot need to be minor skills and skills you don't use much should be major skills).I personally think they over thought the whole character creation and leveling system but you can read about it in depth here.http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Character_CreationIf you level some what correctly, the game is pretty easy. However, if you level incorrectly (which can be as basic as choosing the wrong set of major skills at the beginning of the game), it can be more challenging since all creatures are leveled along with your character.

I play Halo and COD online quite a bit on the Xbox. I learned on day 1, when I heard some guy calling everyone n******, to just mute everyone at all times. It makes online play much more enjoyable.
But at the point, why bother? I thought the whole point to MP was the "enjoyment" of playing with others. If they are all so obnoxious you have to mute them all, then what's the point?

Been completely out of video games for years now. But I somehow ran into the Steam winter sale, and I like the idea of downloading a lot more than running out to purchase a disk, and I ended up buying several games.

I probably bought some games I wouldn’t normally because they were so cheap, but at least I have plenty to play for a long time now. My one rule is that I don’t buy anything over $10 so all of my games are at least a few years old.

Torchlight – Finished it, won’t be buying Torchlight 2

Star Wars – KOTOR – Working on this one right now.

Far Cry 2 – Runs terrible on my machine (I’m playing on an unimpressive laptop). I’ll need to wait until I upgrade to play this.

X-Com: UFO Defense – Nostalgia purchase

Elder Scrolls: Oblivion – Haven’t played yet

Company of Heroes – Haven’t played yet

Crysis – Haven’t played yet

Deus Ex – Haven’t played yet

Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Haven’t played yet

I only get to play once everyone else heads off to bed so these games should last me about five years.
Nice on the Xcom. When you get a new system, check out the new XCom: Enemy Unknown. It's basically the original with updated graphics and features. The gameplay is essentially the same though. Very fun. Steam will probably have it deep discounted by Christmas this year, so you have time.

KOTOR is a good one. I have beaten it several times but I still enjoy playing it. Oblivion got me into RPGs, great game.

If you think KOTOR is massive wait until you get into Oblivion. On the leveling thing it's been a while since I played but I didn't try to power level. I did try to stay kind of in balance as I like a character that can do a bit of everything. Basically I look at the character I am going to play, what they are good at to start with and then I focus on that. If I recall correctly in Oblivion you will want to make sure you put some points into alchemy. Making and selling potions is an easy way to make sure you have cash.

I don't mind online play as much as others but I tend to mute as well because my daughter likes to watch me play and the idiots on there would make the characters from Deadwood blush at the language.

I had forgotten about that. Yeah it is counter-intuitive to say the least.

The only way to play online games, including CoD, is in a party with friends that you know and have fun with. You don't have to hear anyone else except your GB's.

I don't play any multiplayer. At all.
Really? Not even WOW? Cause I mean...
:lmao:I know. I've neve even played WOW. boom.
That makes at least two of us
And then there were three....
4. But to be honest, I bet it would be a game I would love. It was a combination of being a PC based game and having a monthly fee that kept me from ever trying it.

Exactly. There was a time when I was into just grinding out achievements where I could tolerate the noise. I played gears 1 for about 7 months nonstop. At least 3 or 4 hours a day (sometimes up to 8 hours). Played with friends when I could to make it more fun but I'd jump on solo whenever I had free time. All just to get the 10,000 kill achievement. Due to a glitch, it made it so you had to go well beyond the 10k kills though. Finally got the achievement at about 14,500 kills. Stopped after that. That was back when xbox live had no game channels. You had to mute everyone individually. So that got to be a chore.

I've never played WOW either because I just got done with Evercrack and Star Wars Galaxies at that point. Needed to end the addiction. I was referring to
though for Leeroy.

Yeah I got the reference. That video was everywhere. I liked the video of the funeral getting wiped out as well.
