Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (26 Viewers)

Just finished all 5 episodes of The Walking Dead on 360. Anyone else play this game? While it definitely had flaws, I was obsessed with this game. At first, it wasn't what I expected. I expected to be ripping through zombies with an array of weapons. Instead, it's a point and click, story/character development driven game with a "Choose your own adventure" twist. Once I got past not being able to just go GTA on the game and run around destroying the dead, I became immersed in the storyline. I'm really hoping they put out a "2nd season" of the game. Absolutely phenomenal and a game changer, IMO.
I played through the first episode, still need to play the others. I just don't have much time to do so. But I agree, the game itself is pretty cool. Very soon a whole new Walking Dead game is coming out that I believe is more of a FPS. I'm probably going to check that out before I try any more of this one.

AA, read up on the leveling 'issue' in Oblivion. Personally, I'd skip Oblivion all together and just stick with Skyrim. You can get 200+ hours outta Skyrim alone!
Thanks, man. I will. I actually found Oblivion (Xbox) for ten bucks yesterday in the bargain bin at Best Buy, so that was fortuitous. Skyrim is winging its way to me from Amazon. I'll check the leveling thing, see if I flushed my $10 on Oblivion, and proceed. Thanks to you and everyone for all the fantastic advice, particularly given my utter lack of clues related to my inquiry.
You did not "flush" $10 on Oblivion. It's a spectacular game that just happens to have a broken leveling system that you have to work around. If you screw up your leveling, you can also just turn down the difficulty slider. Don't get me wrong -- Oblivion's leveling system really sucks. But it's still a great game despite that.

Nice game, and a fun change of pace from all the shooters out there. They've already confirmed a "second season."

TellTale recently mentioned that there will be something between season one and season two that will be available sometime "soon". From the sound of it, season two was still a ways off.

Regarding Gamestop and trade-ins, I was pleasantly surprised today. I took 3 games into gamestop to trade - Hitman Absolution, Madden 13, and Far Cry 3. I liked Far Cry, but can't see playing it again, and the other two were just meh. I got $84 in credit. Wasn't expecting that. I just looked on ebay, and it looks like I could get about $90-$95 for all three. So Gamestop wasn't a poor choice in this case (a better deal than it used to be, that's for sure.)Now granted, I have their card that adds a few dollars to trade in, and this was for credit (had I wanted cash, it would have been mid-50's). But Gamestop credit is just fine.I walked out with NBA2k13 (new) and Ghost Recon Future Soldier (used).

Are there several Skyrims? If so, do I want the original? Thanks, guys.
The series is called The Elder ScrollsOn this generation of consoles, only The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim are available. These two games are separated by 200 years in time. So while there are some remnants of the story of Oblivion in Skyrim, there is no need to play Oblivion if you don't want to.
Ahhhhh. Had heard of Skyrim but knew nothing about the Elder Scrolls series. :bag: Thanks to you and to all those who responded, really. I will get Oblivion and Skyrim both for whichever console has them. Thanks again, guys!
AA: listen to these guys. Just get Skyrim. It's perhaps the best game I've ever played, and I've been a smacking out to video games since the days of Ultima and Zork.

Thanks, CC. Ultima and Zork! Love it: me too. But I did buy Oblivion, so I'll at least give it a try first.

I rented Hitman from Redbox and played for a couple hours. Seems kind of fun. Price has come way down on it already. Not very well received?

Stupid Minecraft question...

Do the creepers actually talk? Or is "That sure is a nice ______ you have there, it would be a shame if something happened to it" just a meme?

I'm going to get a Minecraft themed birthday cake for my son's party tomorrow. This image printed on a cake. I'm not sure if adding "That sure is a nice birthday you have there" would make any sense to them.

It really is a pice of cake to change your PS3 hard drive (well except for the screws being in so tight that I nearly stripped the + head out of every one of them - thank god for pliers). My original 60gb unit is now a 750gb unit. :pickle:

Broken stealth mechanics. Anyone with the same costume sees through yours whether you are across the room or 5 feet in front of them turns it more into an action game later. A fun action game but not what Hitman is supposed to be.I played all the way through it and enjoyed it but i do see why people were unhappy.

12 month Xbox Gold cards are on sale at Amazon for $34.99. It only hits this price once a year.My link
This price has stayed constant, more or less, for a month. I'm starting to think Amazon knows something we don't and they're dumping them while they still can.Edit: Actually back up to $45 today, but still below where they normally price it.

Yea, they ruined the stealth aspect. Just not that much fun - the game seemed more like work.

Just finished two play throughs of Xcom. I really like the gameplay mechanics, but it is a pretty boring game overall. Watched a lot of shows on the iPad while fighting off alien abductions. Not that I necessarily expect this type of game to be plot driven, but this game really just has no personality. I hope for the sequel they take some pages from the Jagged Alliance playbook and at least give each of the individual soldiers some unique dialog and interpersonal dynamics.

I think most of us saw this coming, but the Dead Space franchise got the axe.

As well as discussing Dead Space 4's alleged cancellation, our source also gave us further insight into Dead Space 3's development, telling us that the game was almost cancelled partway through its development, and saw continuous cuts made to its budget throughout production.

Weapon-specific ammo was allegedly switched for generic ammo late in development, too, as a method for shoehorning in the game's controversial micro-transactions.

EA also advised Visceral that Dead Space 3 needed to appeal to a wider audience than the series' previous two titles, our source added, and the studio was reportedly told to focus on action over horror in an effort to make the game feel more like BioWare's Mass Effect.

Our source's comments tally with those made previously by EA.

Last year, EA Labels president Frank Gibeau suggested that Dead Space 3 would need to sell around five million copies in order for the series to survive.
The first two games were awesome, but as soon as they announced that co-op would be featured in the third installment, you knew this franchise had lost its way. The positive is that hopefully developers will take a lesson from this and realize that not every game has to be COD or Gears of War or Mass Effect. There's lots of room in the market for high-quality horror titles. Turning your horror game into a run-of-the-mill shooter is how you kill a successfull franchise (see also Resident Evil). On a side note, I would like for developers to produce more games that don't need 5 million + in sales to remain viable. The big, blockbuster-type games are nice, but smaller titles are cool too when they fill niches that you don't see elsewhere.

Dead Space 3 received a rating of 9.75 from Game Informer. That's a very high rating from a magazine that doesn't just throw out high review scores willy-nilly. As far as co-op goes, everything I have read indicates it isn't required, but does add to the experience if you want to go that route. I don't have the game yet personally but will once the price drops. But nothing I have read has given any indication whatsoever that game play suffered because of any of the changes. In fact, quite the opposite. The reviews were all highly positive.

What level are you playing? I'm on an Impossible play through right now. Watching your iPad during a mission at this level would definitely result in your squad being wiped out quickly. Boring is not a word I would use to describe any battle I've had to fight through!

I did this and it worked for 4-5 months before my unit died. :sadbanana: But yeah, the physical part of changing the hard drive was a breeze; the backup and restoration of old files was a little more tricky.

Only problem I had was finding something that would format my 500gb external drive to the Fat32 format.

Classic. I enjoy the chess match aspects but the game gives you very little reason to care about what happens. A higher difficulty level would amp up the strategic difficulty but even then the gameplay still gets mechanical and formulaic by its nature, and that's just not going to hold my interest without giving me some other sort of rooting interest. I'm not ripping on the game, there's just lots of room for improvement.

anyone playing the new SimCity? Its pretty much getting universally crushed by critics and users alike. Forget the numerous day 1 bugs and server crashes (that stuff happens). They made the tile size so damn small that you can basically fill it up in an hour.

I really wanted this game to be good, because I really like the franchise. I'm not one of those guys that was SUPER into the game, but I really enjoyed playing the older versions. This new one is basically a facebook game with a $60 price tag. Pretty awful.

Add in the fact that you have to be online the entire time to play it (even if you're just playing single player in a region by yourself) and man you've got a real stinker. 2nd classic franchise from my childhood that has been killed off by an awful reboot in the past year (the other being age of empires)

The bugs on the PS3 basically make Impossible unplayable anyways. You can be cruising along thinking you're ok, then get slammed by three or four bugs in a single mission, any one of which could likely cause a squad wipe. The PC beta patch is out, but no word on anything for the PS3 yet.

A friend of mine told me that the new SimCity is what SimCity Social should have been and told me that I did the right thing to buy SimCity 4 instead. That sucks.

The only bad thing about SC4 is that parts of it are just a little too complex. There are menial tasks (like running water pipes) that are nothing but busy work. The commuting model is also busted and the amount of trash produced is just silly. (you pretty much have to use a mod or make a dedicated trash city in the region to avoid ruining your main city) The new game does take some nice steps to eliminate stuff like that. But at least you can create actual cities in SC4. This new game should be called sim town. The tile sizes are laughably small. Its pretty obvious that they made this game with people with 8 year old computers in mind as opposed to Simcity fans.

That's sad. I really wanted to like the new SimCity. Not that I really wanted to buy it from Origin, but if it was great, I'd consider it.

I ended up walking away from this game too. Mostly because I breezed through the thing on Normal difficulty, but when I took it up a notch, I was getting regularly destroyed. It's possible I just suck at this game. :shrug:Also, I think they goofed making it so plot driven. I understand why they included the story, but after one play through it feels constraining and uninteresting.

I think Normal is really the "training level." It will teach you how to do the basics, build your base, move your units, etc. But tactically it is poor, allowing you to do things that will get you absolutely wiped as you move up in levels. No doubt, the move to Classic takes a huge shift in the way you fight battles. Never moving without cover, flanking, bringing multiple weapons to bear on a target in case your first shot misses, etc and so on. According to the developers, Classic/Ironman is the level the game is meant to be played at. Impossible on the other hand was just put in for the masochists among us. But after awhile, even Classic becomes dreadfully easy. Once you make it through the first month or two, you know you have the game won. It's common for folks to start games, play the first couple months, then restart as their squads become uber-powerful. So it is natural for people to move up to Impossible. But as I said before, right now, Impossible is just plain broke. Unless they actually get around to releasing a patch, the majority of PS3 players will likely trade the game in and move on, if they haven't already done so. The waiting has become tiresome after two months.

I don't know about Game Informer personally, but my experience with the gaming media in general is that they have a tendency to over-rate new entries into established AAA franchises. When I have doubts about a game, I normally wait to see user reviews, and most of the feedback I saw on Dead Space 3 was lukewarm-to-sharply-negative.Here's the broader point though. As soon as they announced that DS3 would feature co-op, they were openly announcing that it was going to be more of a shooter than a horror game. Horror games don't have co-op, but shooters and action games do. That was a huge red flag. Then you had other warning signs, like EA stating that they wanted to make the game more accessible to a broader audience (ie Let's turn it into COD) and the use of generic ammo. Those were clear, unmistakable signs that anything resembling survival horror was being tossed overboard in this installment.Like you, I may end up playing this game at some point once when I have more downtime and it's in the $15 range. It's just that this was a really good franchise that moved too far toward the "action" end of the spectrum.

I see what you mean. Metacritic gave it like a 78 out of 100, but user reviews were much less positive.

I saw Assassin's Creed 4 announced for release 10/29, it looks similar to ACIII in regards to the boat battles.

Main character is apparently grandfather of Connor (ACIII)
I'll give it a shot.
Ship battles were awesome in AC3
That was the one new thing they did right in that game. I'm not surprised that they're gonna center the next game around them.
I'm curious as to how they'll go about the next game now that Desmond is dead.

I can't wait to get this game. I'm trying to hurry but still enjoy the ME trilogy so I can get to GoW. Wish there was a reason to pre-order.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-57573053-1/simcity-launch-a-complete-disaster/

'CNET Editor Jeff Bakalar, assigned to review SimCity, ran into problems trying to connect at least twice a day since Tuesday: "I had planned on reviewing the game for launch -- and I'm not joking here -- I've yet to been able to even play the game. Once."'

As someone who loved the original SimCity and used to love Electronic Arts going all the way back to "One on One" with Larry Bird and Dr J I can honestly say they've killed the experience to the point I wouldn't touch a product from either - maybe ever again. It's like they are trying to out #### up the RIAA in a demonstration of truly alienating your customers. I'm sure they'll blame piracy on future financial woes instead of wrong headed cluster ####s like this.

It really is sad because EA was one of the truly great game companies in the 90s and early 2000's. The leadership they have now is really screwing them. They're making billions in the short term but they're going to have no fan base in 5 years or so when all the little 12 year olds grow up and realize that they've been playing the same Call of Duty game for almost a decade.

But at least you can create actual cities in SC4. This new game should be called sim town. The tile sizes are laughably small. Its pretty obvious that they made this game with people with 8 year old computers in mind as opposed to Simcity fans.
I like the franchise(used to LOVE the franchise) and it's too bad this game had to be the sacrificial lamb of the latest DRM scheme but it's laughable how badly they've bungled this...."SimCity launch a complete disaster

SimCity's requirement for an always-on Internet connection is backfiring, as the game servers are currently going up and down like a yo-yo. How quickly can EA solve this problem?"

Pretty much. And the funny thing is that people will find out how to pirate it anyway. So you're basically inconveniencing all your paying customers (while basically saying you don't trust them) just to make some 19 year old nerd do a few extra hours of work to steal your gameDespite all of the crappy design decisions, i was actually considering buying the game anyway just to play casually. Now I'll wait until it goes on sale for 1/2 price before i reevaluate. If they fix all the problems and come out with some great DLC (including making the city plots bigger) they might get my money.

I understand the point you're trying to make, but Call of Duty is Activision.

I'd be willing to bet that the pirated version would be better than the official version. How long until the game gets hacked to not require always on DRM? Plus a little modding to make the game better.

. . . and that's why I was going to be really pissed if the new consoles required always-on internet. Any system that stops people from playing a single-player game because a server somewhere has the hiccups is just an open invitation for piracy. BoltBacker is exactly right about how nobody learned anything from the RIAA.
