Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (3 Viewers)

Thanks for the help guys.

If you're lucky enough to date a girl who likes fantasy and RPG, is she going to be into Borderlands? That'd be my deciding question on buying the series, most likely.

Borderlands is a hyper intense action shooter with just some limited RPG elements. It is nothing like a Skyrim type game imo. Just check out some vids on youtube of Borderlands.

I will be moving on to Borderlands 2.
That should say madshot not Todem below.
Not a traditional rpg but a great game in its own right is the shooter/rpg Borderland 1 & 2. Both can be bought as good deals now. These especially work with your two player split screen co-op.
I never played Borderlands but Borderlands 2 is perhaps the funniest game I have ever played. The dialogue is sometimes spit take funny. I also love the co-op mode, it really takes the game to another level to be able to play cooperatively against the AI from remote systems. They really nailed that dynamic. I am almost embarrassed to tell how many hours I have put into that game. Who needs a medical license when you got style? :lmao:
The first Borderlands was just as funny, although Tiny Tina in BL2 was fab.

Start with the first one if you get it and go for the game of the year edition. My girlfriend started off with Fable 2 & 3, then went to resident Evil 5 in co-op mode because she had never played a shooter before. From there she got Kingdoms of Armalur and started up Gears of War 3 because that's "my" game. She still had never played a fps style game until Borderlands and it took a little for her to get used to but it is her favorite franchise now. She started out with fantasy games and others like the sims, but the charm and co-op atmosphere made Borderlands a great time sink. Not to mention the addictive nature of finding better loot as you play. But beware, as soon as we got Borderlands she got her own Xbox and claimed my big screen.

Tiny Tina is awesome, though it's rough hearing the echo recordings about her in the Wildlife Preserve, her DLC is coming out later this year too. Looking forward to that one.

Just impulse-d bought NBA2k13....Been a looooong time since I played any basketball games.
Tell me how it is. I have been thinking about picking up a sports game and would love MLB the show but its ps3 only. I really want to play a franchise mode bilut don't like the physics of NCAA/madden and then am not a fan of basketball anymore.

It's a great basketball game. Not sure how much appeal it has for someone who isn't a basketball fan, though...

I'm interested to hear your thoughts on Dark Souls Madahot - I think you're going to love it once you get the hang of things. Takes a few hours before you do but the reward is worth it.

Pretty amazing Humble Bundle weekly sale if you are interested in The Walking Dead for Steam.

Pay at least $4, and you get The Walking Dead (all 5 episodes) as well as a crap load of other episodic games like Back to the Future, Wallace and Gromit, Hector and Sam & Max.

Link
Bumping this - amazing deal for episodic games.

Bought Alan Wake for $5. It's okay - the Max Payne influences are there (love the original 2 Max Payne games). Not very far into it, but its enough to keep me trucking through it at this point.

Not that you asked, but I picked it up last night. Plopped it in (and then had to wait a while for the 400MB of updates). Played for a half hour or so. Liked the dark ambiance. Suspense was good. Learned that doors, particularly when something is on the other side, are most often one way (as are portals).

Not sure if I'll like it yet as I'm not used to button mashing games. But I plan on trying again tonight.

Interesting, I never considered Demon Souls/Dark Souls to be a button masher. I found the fighting, while action oriented, to be extremely strategic and timing based. Rush head on in to even the weakest enemies and the game will happily show you the error of your ways.

:goodposting:

Don't think of it as a button-masher. Button-mashing sends you back to the nearest bonfire.

As you're starting out, it's a good idea to focus on blocking and managing your stamina bar. Stamina is critically important in combat.

there has been no game series I have ever played where a shield was as important. I agree 100% that blocking is incredibly important in this game.

which makes the demo of Dark Souls 2 all the more scary in that it appears in some areas you need to carry a torch in one hand making you shield-less

Blocking is a vital tool but a lot of people become over dependent on it. Try using a shield that doesn't block 100% of physical damage or try using no shield.Lol, try dual wielding.

I'm looking forward to some next gen console games that will have ridiculous numbers of players in multiplayer. Halo 5 & Battlefield 4 maybe? And I'll say it again, someone needs to revive the MechAssault franchise.

All I want is Ghost Recon from the OG Xbox with today's graphics. Keep the gameplay the same, give me some new maps plus some old favorites like Embassy and Docks.

Lol kind of hoping they improve dual wielding DS2, I think its a little silly you can block while twohanding a weapon, but if your dual wielding you cant block.

Moobs... I may need some help over XBL if I start up Dark Souls again. When I quit I think I was frustrated not so much at dying a lot, but the fact that is was just so hard to figure out where the hell to go or what to do sometimes.

I just kept my ipad close by and referred to the wikia when needed. The game itself might have the least hand holding of any game ever.

I love the fact that this game starts you out right on the outskirts of that graveyard leading into the catacombs. As if somebody who is new to the game with a level 1 character has a chance in hell of getting more than a hundred yards into that area.

And I am guessing that fewer than 0.1% of players would ever find the Painted World without the wiki.

I know mobile games have not been discussed a lot here, but I have really been enjoying 2 relatively recent Amazon FAotD's - Wargames and 10,000,000 - both are strategic matching games with RPG elements. Good stuff.

I don't understand why that's appealing. It sounds like piss poor design

There are lots of things in the Souls franchise that would qualify as poor game design to the point of being game-breaking in other games, but for some reason they work in this one. For example, there literally no way to pause the game. Pressing the "start" key or whatever the Xbox analog is just calls up your menu, but the game keeps right on running. Want to use the restroom or grab a beer or something? You have to either quit the game or find a safe place for your character to stand around while you're gone. Oh, and while you're away, some other player might invade your game. The "invasion" mechanic exists mainly for other players to #### with you, just because.

Part of the appeal of this franchise is the game is very open about the fact that it's sort of trolling you. My favorite example is a particular level in Demon's Souls. You spend an hour meticulously working your way through a maze-like prison, and then you finally get to the end. The boss area is obviously right up there at the top of a big open staircase. So you run up the stairs toward the fog door. Except there's an invisible black phantom standing there who will one-shot you with her crossbow if you foolishly let your shield down, sending you all the way back to the beginning of the level. If Demon's Souls could talk, it would say something like this:

Wait, you died to that Black Phantom? Why didn't you have your shield up? After all the time we've spent together, I thought you would at least have learned to keep your shield up all times when entering an unfamiliar area. I really don't know if this is going to work out between us. Maybe Angry Birds is more your speed.
I'll never blame anybody for hating this franchise. When I say that it's not for everybody, I mean it. There's really nothing else like it on the market right now.

This is still the best video game review ever written (probably posted here before):

Demon’s Souls is a game that will make you into a man. A scrawny fourteen-year-old, after two hours with this game, will be grooming his muttonchops and ready to ship off on the next boat to fight the Kaiser. If you are already a man, it will make you into some sort of bizarre double-man. What’s that you say? You’re a woman? You don’t want to be a man? Too bad. Too bad. That’s the Demon’s Souls way.

You’ve probably heard that Demon’s Souls is hard. Pshh. Lots of games are hard. Some are even harder than this one. The difficulty is not the point. What sets Demon's Souls apart is the way that it doesn't just kill you, but also stomps on your genitals when you’re down. And it will make you realize that that’s what you needed all along.

It’s a lot like life. Sometimes in life you win, and sometimes the giant armored skeleton stabs your face off because the flying mantis monster you didn’t even see shot you in the back with a spike at just the wrong time. And when that happens in life, do you respawn at the same spot and carry on like nothing happened? NO, #######. You go back to the beginning of the level, leaving all your hard-earned souls out there on the pavement, and you fight your way back. And you learn a lesson from the whole thing, because you should have been wearing your Thief’s Ring, now shouldn’t you? That’s life.

The trend in hard games these days is to unlock “Easy” mode for you once you’ve died enough times. Do you think Demon’s Souls does that? Do you think Demon’s Souls is so much as aware of the concept of “Easy” mode? NO IT IS NOT. If Demon’s Souls even knew we were talking about “Easy” mode, it would come over here and kick the #### out of all of us. And we would deserve it.

I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because #### you is why.

Have I told you about the online elements? At any time when you’re in Body form, another player from anywhere else in the world can invade your game and murder you to regain his own body, or just to keep you on your toes. This happens when you’re in the middle of fighting armies of unthinkable monsters that are probably already three-quarters of the way towards killing you. And no, you cannot opt out of this feature! This is what you signed up for when you agreed to be a man.

When this happened to me -- when a guy strolled into my game like it was Taco Bell and exploded my torso, costing me my body and all my progress in the level -- was I mad? No, because I was too busy being in awe at how ####### hardcore the experience was.

Now, don’t let this dissuade you. Demon’s Souls is a pitiless master, but let it never be said that it is not fair. The game rewards handsomely those who stand up to it, and the greater the challenge, the greater the glory.

What the hell are you waiting for?

These are the two key paragraphs especially the second one

I can't emphasize how much I suck at video games and I was still able to get the platinum trophy for this game. Extremely rewarding game.

I certainly can't explain it and it is really a game you need to play to understand the appeal I think because like you said, just reading about it it sounds awful but it is one of my favorite games ever, right up there with Fallout 3, Skyrim, Borderlands 1, and Bioshock 1.

A little late to game with this one (and don't know how I never played it until last night)... But I fired up Portal. And holy wow. I think I found a new part time mistress.

Portal is great, but short. Portal 2 is amazing and much longer. BTW make sure you watch all the way through the credits. My current ringtone is Still Alive.

It should be said that while it is a brutally hard game - It's a fair game. You can get really good and breeze right through reallt tough areas if you are paying attention and on top of your game. If you let your guard down then that is when it makes you pay.

99% of the time you die, it's your fault.

It just means you're going the "wrong" way. One of the things I love about Dark Souls is that you can go a lot of different directions from the start. It doesn't mean you're ready to, but its possible and you are rewarded when you get strong enough to come back to it.

NP. Ill help as much as I can.

I will say this is definitely a game you can't put down for an extended stretch and you're better off starting from scratch. It would be like not playing Gears for 3 months and then playing against a full clan in MP.

In a perverse, other-wordly way, Demon's Souls / Dark Souls are like the old Mario games. You keep going, and if you die, you start over. And you figure out what you did wrong (because it's all on you.)

The funny thing about these games is you slowly fight through a level, getting just a little further each time. Then after an hour (and nineteen deaths), you find the boss. And he insta-kills you, and you go back to the level's beginning. But a funny thing happens... that level that took you an hour to slowly conquer? You are now a grizzled veteran, and you get back to the boss in five minutes. Because you learned to fight better. Death is plentiful, but never cheap - you always die because you weren't ready for the surprise, you didn't fight good enough, etc.

The sense of accomplishment in these games are uncanny. Even when you die nine billion times.

I want to punch any gamer who has not played Portal.
I still remember you squishing me in Portal 2 when you "couldn't find the switch" before the giant block came back down. Or when you launched me into acid...multiple times. The co-op is awesome in the game.

Love it. Co-op games like that... games that can make you smile and laugh until you cry... are priceless

EA is handing out old online passes for free. Go to xbox.com or the dashboard, sign in and look up EA titles and many of the online passes are for free right now until they are out. I grabbed BBC2 VIP, some Dead Space 2 stuff, Mass Effect 2 Cerberus Network and others.

Thats nice of them at least the people who don't switch over to the X1 will be able to play online until they shut off the servers as soon as the X1 is released lol.

I want more Portal & Portal 2. Awesome games but far to short.

Omerta is interesting to me because there's a lack of gangster strategy games out there but the reviews pretty much panned it as having no depth and being ridiculously easy.
I wouldn't say RIDICULOUSLY easy, but even on the hardest level it wasn't the most difficult thing I've ever played. If you can catch it on sale, it's certainly worth it.

No, did you? We need to do it.
