Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (11 Viewers)

Just finished Red Dead and Uncharted 2. Liked Red Dead a little more than Uncharted 2. If Uncharted had a way to fast forward through some puzzles it would be an all time great game. Debating on Madden 13, Borderlands 2 or GTA4 as my next game.

btw - I know I'm way late for any discussion on Red Dead, but just have to ask "WTF was up with his kid's whiny voice?" The whole game was serious and then his son sounds like a 70s cartoon character.
You can't go wrong with Borderlands 2. Perhaps the most entertaining FPS I have ever played. Beyond the ### kicking bad ###ery of bad ###itude it is absolutely hysterica##ly funny.###!!!
Awesome. Just picked it up for 9.99

I think I missed the point of Borderlands 2 because I hated it. I never played the first and picked up #2 for $10 and couldn't get into it. I'm not really a loot-game guy I guess.
It's a loot game at its foundation but the co-op aspect is what makes it special. Without friends it's a good game. With friends it is a top 5 experience I have had this decade with gaming.

Apparently you aren't a hilarious game guy either.

Does anyone know if Witcher 3 will be more open than 2? I liked it but felt really restricted in where I could go and didn't like that at all.
recently read an article saying it will be true open world like Skyrim.
The developers say the world in Witcher 3 will be about 20% bigger than Skyrims massive setting.
I know its very early, but one thing I'd like to see this gen is some seriously large worlds in RPGs. Skyrim was okay, but I'm hoping for something 5x or so that size, where it's extremely difficult to explore every little nook and cranny.

Even if this was possible, from a financial stand point do game studios really want a player investing so much time on one game or moving on to play others?

If they can pack on micro transactions, they want them in there as long as possible.

Is it good with the local co op, or is it only enjoyable online where everyone has a full screen.

I've played all the Gears series and a few other games locally with my girlfriend, and I'm looking for something else we can sink a bunch of time into.

Has any console game ever been successful with the micro-transaction model?

Not sure how much money ME3 made off of their multiplayer. But I heard people love it. I never cared more than to get the achievement and the requirement to play it to get full readiness in the single player. That thing was all microtransactions tempting you with bigger guns, different suits and characters. People love that crap apparently. I'm sure there are others that have made some money.

A bunch of pc games have been very successful from this model, I guess it is only a matter of time before more consoles go this way.

I don't know if BL2 has a couch co-op option.

Speaking of ME3, finally got around to buying all the DLC and sitting down to start it. Just started Leviathan, and while it isn't great I'm definitely enjoying having an excuse to dive back into the game.

both are enjoyable. online give a larger viewing area, but it works just fine for you and the girlfriend to sit and play together on the couch. My wife and I played the coop quite a bit

Citadel and Omega were worth every penny. Citadel especially felt like the ending we should have had even though it still comes before the main ending. You'll see what I mean when you get there.

Vroomy, although we have two xboxs, the co-op in borderlands is great. My girlfriend was a PC gamer ala the sims but now really like co-op games on the Xbox. Borderlands 1&2 are her favorite especially since she can play as a chick. Other co-op favorites are Gears, Resident Evil 5, Minecraft, and Diablo III.

DO YOU SMELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL WHAT THE ROCK IS COOKIN?

Just started up WWE2K14. Played the first wrestlemania match Andre the Giant vs Big John Stud!!!

Little clunky and still don't know all the options but for the 40 bucks it's mindless fun thus far!!!

For those that have played Sleeping Dogs, I've heard some comparisons made to the game play of the GTA series.

Are there hookerish aspects of the game like there are in GTA? I'd like to get it for my 13 YO nephew, but I'd have to look elsewhere if banging a stripper is part of the game.

He's got a PS3 plays your basic Assassins Creed / Call of Duty / Batman : Arkham type games. Currently weighing a Sleeping Dogs vs. Elder Scrolls V Skyrim choice.

Any thoughts from the gamers here?

I don't remember any hookers in Sleeping Dogs. My recollection is that if AC and COD are okay, this should be okay too.

Edit: But Skyrim is a better game overall.

My girlfriend is currently crazy about Diablo 3. I'm ready to move on from it, so I'm hoping Borderlands will take.

Thanks for the info.

Vroomy, also Borderlands is FPS so depending on what she has played before it does act as a solid introduction to that viewpoint. Since I have played so many games over the years I was shocked at how much adjusting it took for my gf to wrap her brain around playing in first person. Starting off with the TPS mentioned above helped and the the casual Borderlands was a good bridge to things like COD, possibly Battlefield, and another co-op game Payday 2. If she would have started off with a competitive game it would not have went well and it would have been forever forsaken.

Total Newb here looking for some pointers. So I picked up a used Xbox & Kinect for $50. I primarily bought it for the kids, but also wanted to try a couple grown up games also. I assume that until I get a feel for playing anything (controls, how an where to look for things and how to interact with the game) I need to stick with the single player mode. 360 games are relatively cheap right now, so what's a good rookie gamer in training game to start with. If I start out and I'm getting annihilated every 30 seconds by some rabid zombie or some tweenage gamer in Mongolia, I'm thinking I'm bailing on the whole game experience pretty quickly. Keeping in mind too that if the game play is boring I might as well go back and try and get to level 2 in Mario Kart.

Any recommendations from the masses?

You just missed out on getting Gears of War free with the Games With Gold service (XBox Live Gold members get free games twice a month). The current free game is Shoot Many Robots.

His zombies comment makes me shy away from Bioshock.

I would say Tomb Raider, Portal 1&2, and of course - Mass Effect.

Also:

Assassin's Creed series. Especially AC 2, Brotherhood and Revelations and AC 4: Black Flag.

Batman Arkham series (Asylum, City and Origins)

Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite (only buy Bioshock 2 if you really enjoy the original Bioshock and you want more info on Rapture - still a good game, though)

Burnout Paradise (you mentioned Mario Kart. This is mindless racing fun)

Portal 2 (also get Portal: Still Alive from XBLA or from Valve's Orange Box; Orange Box also includes the awesome Half-Life 2 and it's episodes)

Grand Theft Auto V

Red Dead Redemption

NBA 2K series (you can easily find 2k11 cheap. It's my favorite.)

If you're into RPGs, Mass Effect trilogy, Fallout 3 (and New Vegas) and the Elder Scrolls games, especially Skyrim.

That's off the top of my head.

Thanks for all the recommendations! I am a big Batman (and zombie) fan and that was my initial inking to start off with. But I had heard that all the Batman Xbox/PS3/PC games are for the well initiated to the whole gaming environment. That said, if the game is interesting and keeps with my ability to at least stand a puncher's chance, I'm game for most anything.

Between family and work and geezer school I won't have the hundred hours a week I've read some people throw at these things. If I can pick it up after a couple days off and play for a couple hours and pick back up pretty much where i left off, that'll work for me.

thanks again

You can always start off by playing on the easiest settings until you're comfortable upping the difficulty. I find that the games are mostly pretty easy even on medium for the most part. I recommend the Assassin's Creed series because it's a very easy game to pick up and play too. Almost too easy, but still really fun. Just skip the first one.

Something like single player call of duty (any of them) on easy mode is just about as straightforward as it gets if you are looking at a shooter.

This may have been posted but BL2 is free for playstation plus members right now. Picked up grid 2 and BL2, so the $30 Black Friday deal is already paying off.

Did not know that. I've not been interested in it but free is the right price.

Also noticed Grid 2 is free for ps+ right now. That came out in May of this year! Definitely will give it a try.

I want to play Tearaway on the PS Vita so bad. That game just looks like pure FUN. It uses the touch screen on the back of the Vita like never before. I would dare to say that it is revolutionary the way the finger mechanics work in the game. Check out this video:

Tearaway

Now to find someone with a Vita I can borrow.

Skyrim is a special game.
If you are playing on a PC, there are a lot of fun mods that enhance the graphics, quest objectives (giving better information), and sounds. These mods don't affect gameplay just overall aesthetics. I don't have them in front of me at work but I can post the ones that I use later on.

That said, I do play with the Moar Dragons mod and the Dragon Souls for Perks mod because dragons are fun.

Glad you like the game.

Agreed. You gotta think the next true Elder Scrolls game is going to seriously bring it. It will be deep enough into this console cycle that they'll squeeze everything they can out of the consoles. And they'll have been able to learn a TON from Fallout 4.

For any fans of Baldur's Gate 2, the Enhanced Edition came out last month on Steam.

It's $25, which is a bit pricey for a decade-old game, but if you're a fan of the game, it's worth it. It's got a new coat of paint, making it look great on modern monitors, it includes the expansion, there are four new NPC characters that are fully integrated into everything, and a new tactical battles arena. But it's still the old game you loved - just better (there are also a few nice tweaks - a quick loot option, a quick save, etc). Best of all, it does this with no modding/etc (yes, you could buy the old version on Gog for a lot cheaper and mod it up - I did that a few years back, but this one is better / smoother / etc.)

YMMV regarding the price, but this is a top 3 all time game for me, and to have it seem brand new in 2013 is worth 25 bucks.
