Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (8 Viewers)

Do the Bloodborne guys have any updated reviews that changed your initial impressions of the game?
Still loving it. I just encountered the fourth boss, and I'm enjoying the enemy variety so far.

One thing I've noticed -- this game throws mobs at you in a way that was fairly uncommon in the Souls games. You'll sometimes find yourself ambushed by 6-8 guys at once, which takes a little getting used to. The online feature is nice for this. A couple of nights ago, I came up to a room with half a dozen messages with some variant of "Beware of ambush" and "Behind you," and when I looked into the room there were a bunch of tombstones all over the place. Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't go blindly running in there . . .

Can other players "invade" your game to help or hunt you like Souls games? I don't have PS+ so I wonder if I won't see the messages or other online features,

you won't. I had to buy it for that. For the $50 a year, if I get a free game or two, it's worth it to me.

I do think the online component is a must with Bloodborne. I have found the messages way more helpful than any other souls title.

anyone else playing - should we start a Bloodborne thread?

Valiant Hearts: The Great War is an interesting little puzzle game.
I may have said this before, but this is the only game I've ever played where I actually looked forward to reading the text that comes along with each collectable. You could seriously give this game to high schoolers as an educational module for WWI.
So...that final scene... :sadbanana:

Seriously. I'm tearing up here..
Just played through the whole thing today. Wow, just wow. Never played anything like that.

I never would have guessed that a game could hit me like that emotionally. Just masterfully done. Bravo.

I was full blown  during the final sequence. Incredible that a any game could evoke that in me.
i want more.

No. I think other players can only invade if you've summoned co-op partners. I suspect there are PVP areas later on, but I've 5 bosses in and haven't been invaded once.

Ok, so The Talos Principle (PC) is AWESOME.

Love love love it.

First person strategy game in the mold of Portal, with a story that keeps you engaged. The puzzles get more and more fun to figure out as you go. I'm in the home stretch, maybe an hour left, and have played for probably 13 or 14 hours. Still some extras left to go back and do, and I think the modding community will be fun in the future, with home grown puzzles.

Highly recommend if you like this type of game.

So the 2015 Game of the Year for me is pretty clearly Cities Skylines at this point. I think I've already mentioned that this is the sequel to Simcity 4 that we've been waiting 10+ years for.

The game is gorgeous, fun, and the mod community is absurdly huge. The game's been out 2-3 weeks and there's already 25,000 mods that have been released. You can have everything from In N' Out burger to a Better Call Saul billboard added to your city.

Here, have some screenshots.

I've heard great things about this except for the traffic bugs. Have they released a patch for this yet?

There's a bug where cars will line up in the rightmost lane for a turn even if their turn isn't coming up for a few intersections, resulting in cars backing up in the right lane and not using the other lanes. It can be worked around in-game by using one-way roads or by just having multiple routes, and I think there are some mods that attempt to fix it too.

I'd expect it to be patched up soon. They've already released two patches since the game's been released.

Might have to take the plunge on this one soon. I keep hearing great things and I love these games.

True story: as a 12 or 13 year old, I was one of 3 game testers of the original Sim City. My dad knew the guy who founded Maxis.

MLB The Show 15.....it's on tomorrow.

Have the 10th Anniversary edition coming via Amazon Prime.

Purchased the digital version. I actually wanted the steelbook but didn't want to deal with swapping discs.

Little more Bloodborne talk.

Have killed 2 bosses, explored many areas, opened shortcuts, got new weapons, upgraded them, etc. I play these games pretty slow - I know Ivan had said he's four bosses in a few days ago. I just killed Boss two last night - took me about 4 tries, and got a little closer each time. I knew I'd get him.

Definitely ready to say this is every bit as good as Dark Souls / Demons Souls, and perhaps even a little better, because the combat is more fun / satisfying. The things they took away were really just bloat (too many upgrade paths, pointless stats), and don't affect the game at all. Even a little stripped down, there's plenty of variety, as your style of attack and weapons make for big differences in how you approach things.

Target has Buy 1 get 1 50% off on all Xbox, PlayStation and PC games till 4/4.

Got a Bloodborne question.

Does it "feel" like a souls game? How much lore is there? How do firearms feel?

I'm not deep enough into it for the "lore" aspect to really take hold, but I kind of ignored that a little in Souls anyway and focused more on monster bashing. The lore seems no less developed to my (somewhat uncaring) eyes. You're a hunter, the hunt is on, let's get to it. The setting is fantastic - very gothic / horror in feel.

Firearms are not what you think - they aren't really offensive weapons, as they don't do much damage. They are more like your shield in that they interrupt melee attacks and/or stun enemies, allowing for you to counter. I forget to use mine half the time.

The biggest difference from Souls games I've seen so far is a sharp de-emphasis on ranged combat. No arrows, no spells. You can throw a pebble at enemies to lure them, and there are molotov cocktails for close range, but brutal hand to hand rules. There are a few enemies with guns, but they don't hit you hard, and are easy to take out when you rush them and they have to reload. So far, anyway. I suspect maybe later I'll run into a sniper with a powerful gun.

To answer your big question, it's *definitely* a Souls game in feel.

the last paragraph scares me as I have always beaten the Souls games by using range tactics. When reading about the game before it as release I was hoping the guns would be a relatively equal substitute for a simple spell like Soul Arrow but it appears not to be the case.

When somebody says that this is like a Souls game only without spells and without shields, it sounds super-difficult, but it's not all that bad. The enemies are clearly designed around melee combat -- you won't miss soul arrow or your purple flame shield after a couple of hours.

Also, if you get stuck on a boss, co-op is pretty dramatically over-powered in this game. I only needed help on one of them so far, but I've helped a bunch of people out, and I'd guess we completely wreck the boss about 75% of the time just by brute force, with no special tactics required.

No, not a substitute at all. They are more a substitute for your shield than anything.

FWIW, my favorite souls toon was a sorcerer who relied heavily on soul arrow and dodging. After an initial "not sure if I like this" learning curve, I adapted to Bloodborne fairly quickly - especially once I found the first hidden shortcut that allowed me to bypass an area I could not beat. It's a different game, but at the same time, retains much the same overall feel. It's hard to describe, but if you have a PS4 and liked souls, it's a safe buy.

Largest Skyrim mod due out this year.

Total conversion, looks way cool.
Great. As if I haven't already invested enough of my life in Skyrim.
Holy crap, that's not just a mod, it's an entirely new game built off the skyrim platform. Pretty f-ing impressive. I will never understand how these guys find the time to do this stuff.
I think they view it as a job interview with a potential huge payoff. See DICE. They did the Desert Combat mod for Bf1942. How many years later and they are huge in the gaming industry.

I think it's time for bloodborne thread......

Put me in the camp that's going to be scared to death without my shield
Almost, but not quite yet. We still seem to be in the "what's the game like" part, and not detailed discussion on builds / shortcuts / areas, which then is definitely "own thread" discussion. Looks like only 2 or 3 of us are playing right now, with a few Souls fans on the sidelines wondering if it's worth the $60 (it is).

So I thought I'd try Deus Ex Human Evolution again. I find that after playing Lara Croft and Dishonored the play elements I didn't care for don't bother me much. The story seems good.

I am definitely doing another play through Deus Ex Human Revolution, I just got the Director's Cut for the improved boss battles.

I thought it was very good in game story telling. Hope you enjoy it.

Been playing Spec Ops: The Line over the past week. I really like the game play elements and the fact that they don't let you take tons of damage before dying even on average difficulty. Overall a very linear game with only two decision points so far and no apparent side quests but I I find the action to be crisp and clean and it makes for a solid shooter.

The stroy clearly pulls heavily from Heart of Darkness but I find that doesn't bother me and they seem to be taking the main character into an interesting direction. The whole phosphorous mortar sequence was pretty rough and the fact that they didn't make that a "decision point" suggests to me that it will come back to haunt the main character later. The voice acting is pretty solid too.

Overall this is a really fun game so far.

One thing about deus ex that is distracting is the main character sounding just like Clint Eastwood.
The cheesy voice acting has always been a principle complaint and is mentioned in most reviews, it's hard to argue against it.

It makes me laugh a little so I'm okay with it.
