Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (4 Viewers)

So Rocket League. I pick it up for $20 when it released last night thinking it would be a cool little game. It released early around 9pm so I figured I'd hop into a game and play for 15 minutes just to see what it's all about. Next thing I know it's 1:30am and I'm flying through the sky trying to knock the ball in the net.

Wow!

Finally finished up Assassins Creed Black Flag. Was pretty annoyed by the end. Game had a ton of potential (open world, story, crafting), but fell flat over the long haul. Doubt I will ever bother with the other incarnations unless they reinvent the wheel.

I'm back on the WoW sauce. It's embarrassing but I am powerless against it. 11 years of wasted time.

I hope they do something to change up the formula of 1) explore current area 2) climb towers to unlock next area 3) Go to step 1.

A lot of the games with that open world mechanic are starting to blend together.
Like the Assassin's Creed franchise.  I have to admit that climbing viewpoints in AC really never gets old for me.  Far Cry, not so much.

What is this The Witness game that got 10/10 on ign?
It's awesome.  It's a puzzle game by the same guy that made Braid.  You are on an island and with no tutorial or any guidance you just start solving 2d puzzles.

I haven't gotten very far, but I dig it.  You must like puzzle games!!

This game is fantastic! I've been waiting to get addicted to a new game ever since Ori.

If anyone on XBox wants to add me my gamertag is CorniestOhio54 (don't ask, Microsoft named me).

Would be cool to form a team.
Been wrecking xbox newbs... It's great... like the COD Xmas newbs!

Ubisoft announced this week that they're going to take a break on Assassin's Creed games for at least a year.  I'm totally fine with it.  They've made so many so close together, you'd think that it was Guitar Hero's Creed (no, not a Guitar Hero game playing Creed, although that would be terrible too).   I'm just completely burnt out on AC games.  It peaked at Ezio for me.  Black Flag is great, but I can't bring myself to finish it.

In the market for XB1 soon. Any good deals lately or on the horizon?
camelcamelcamel.com is a good place to start.  You can link your wishlist from Amazon (if you have one) and it will alert you about price drops.  Invisiblehand is another solid resource.  It's a web browser add in (I have it on chrome) and when you are on Amazon (or many other retail price) it will actively search the net and see what other prices the same item you are looking at is going for.

I put pretty much every 1TB Xbox on an Amazon wish list and linked it to CCC and I see regular price drops.  Depending on the bundle you want you can get a 1TB Xbox for $330 (but remember to check if that price includes shipping), $360-370 seems to be available pretty consistently.

Right now the best priced bundle I can find from CCC is the Xbox One 1TB Console - 3 Games Holiday Bundle (Gears of War: Ultimate Edition + Rare Replay + Ori and the Blind Forest) for $355 and if you have Amazon Prime that includes free shipping, not sure how much it would be without AP.  Invisiblehand found the same bundle for $349.99 (free shipping) on Ebay.

Yea saw that one. The Rare Replay doesn't look like it would interest me. Most of those games I either still have the cartridges or I can get them easy on an emulator.

The 1TB might be worth the $50 though.

What are the advanced techniques?  I've played a good bit but the main things I've improved on are spacing and getting the right speed to knock the ball (I was boosting too early and would go under the ball when trying to knock it in).

For another $50 ($399 total) you get that same 1TB Console, plus Gears, Ori, Rare Replay and Forza Horizon 2 and a $50 Amazon Gift Card. So basically, pay for the GC, get Forza Horizon 2 free.

or you could go 500GB, Rainbow Six Siege, Vegas and Vegas 2, plus Forza Horizon 2 and the $50 Amazon GC for $349.

Looks like the first deal is only 500gb for $349 now but still a good buy.

No wait. It linked to the 500gb one but the 1tb is still there.
For what it's worth, if the extra storage is important to you, you can usually find 2TB external hard drives in the neighborhood of $70. That's what I paid for mine and I've seen them at that price pretty often.

I have seen the discussion about external drives for XBox around here before, IIRC there are some drives that work better than others.  Which one of you :nerd: remembers which specific one(s) were the best for that purpose?

My post was more to provide you resources for watching sales.

BTW if you haven't played Ori, I cannot recommend it strongly enough.  Frustrating as hell sometimes but wow, such an interesting (and deeply touching) game.

I was probably going this route. How hard is it to hook up? Just straight to the USB port?

If you have not done the single player trainings, you should.  The aerial training really helped me a lot (especially as a goalie).  Outside of just getting your timing down there's not a ton that's not more strategic.

The biggest thing I see people mess up is the start of the match.  If you're not in the closest position to hit the ball, don't waste your boost.  If you are the closest, you better be there to hit the ball so it doesn't start off in your zone.

Another thing is a lot of people play "5 year old soccer" where everyone on the team just follows the ball around.  Your team should always have one person back (in goal if it's in your end or somewhere near half-court if you've pushed into the opponents zone).

Defense wins championships!!!

Cockroach might be able to add more to this (he's the best RL player I play with and he's the one that got me to do the trainings).

So, my wife informed me that I could get a Xbox One for my birthday (I think her original present was going to be a $200 smart dumbbell set and a $50 meat head workout video set using them- to which I informed her that I would use the dumbbells but never watch the videos... who the hell wants to watch these meatheads yap about body building when all you want to do is get in shape? But I digress.....)

Here I am asking for advice. I could get the PS if I wanted to. But I have never had a PS before. I did some research and see that PS has a clear advantage in graphics. However, for a while the TV I will be playing on wont really matter with the graphics until I can upgrade that which will be a while. So, the big reason I see having a PS means nothing to me. On the other side- I have several 360 games I would like to play still and my 360 is basically dead. I like the idea of being able to play them on the One (assuming they are the titles that carry over... not sure how you figure that out.)

Final bit of info on me- obviously I am not a hardcore gamer. I like Football, shooter (Gear of War, Call of Duty, etc) and strategy type games (mostly on PC stuff like Total War, Civilization, etc).

The first advice I need: is there something I am missing that I really should take another look at the PS before getting the One?

Assuming I move forward with the Xbox One- the next area of advice I need is which one do I get? We will get it thru Amazon (lots of $ in Amazon gift cards). Now obviously there is a difference between the 500GB and 1TB and I understand that but other than game and control options- I don't quite understand the difference. What the hell is the elite with a "hybrid" 1TB drive? What do I want to get here?

Muchas gracias in advance for the feedback, direction and advice.

I really don't think you can go wrong with either one.  I have both, and both get use.  I really don't see a glaring difference in either as far as graphics, though I haven't bought the same game for each to give a true side by side.

Personally, I don't think there is a compelling reason to go with one over the other, unless you have friends who play online you want to join, then get the same system they have.

Otherwise, do you like one controller over the other?  Get that one.  There are advantages of both.

Are there exclusive titles for one or the other you really want to play?

These to me are the deciding factors, not the graphics.  Both blow the previous generation away.  I got the PS4 first because I had owned PS1 and PS3, and both still work.  I had a Xbox, and 360, and both died, but I have had zero issues with the X1 in the short time I've owned it.

I have only ever had Xbox. Original and 360. My 360 is not working right now but I am sure I could get it fixed since it is just the tray jammed up which I am sure is dust issues. I played with it for a while but couldn't get it open and didn't feel like totally opening the whole thing up. I figured I would be getting the One soon so who cares.

For titles, since I have only had the Xbox all the titles I am familiar with that are exclusive would be from Xbox. All of which are reasons why I am pretty sure I am getting an Xbox plus the backwards compatibility but wanted to open it up to others who know more than me to talk me into PS if there was reasons to get it.

In addition to your "don't just always chase the ball" advice... I'd remind people that you don't always have to be driving.   A lot of times I just post up around halfcourt and wait for them to inevitably knock it back to me out of the corner.

And another "protip" is to learn to navigate via front/back flip.  3 flips in a row will get you to full speed without using boost... vital for defensive recoveries and covering large amounts of fields as fast as possible while still conserving boost (straight flying is the fastest way across the board).

There was a series of vids I watched early on that got me familiar with all the possible moves... there's actually a lot there with the double jumps and rolls and stuff:

Also, the best player in the world is named Kronovi... if you want your mind blown on the type of aerial goals that are possible, check out his highlight reel.  It may actually deter you from playing though as you'll never be that good

For a casual gamer, the only person who would talk someone into a PS4 over an X1 would be a fanboy, IMO.
Not sure if it is it being a fanboy to point out that by most technical benchmarks PS4 beats out XBox.  But most of those technical benchmark advantages will be lost on the casual gamer.

I agree with whoever said that the driving factors should be exclusive titles and likes and dislikes related to the controllers.  Most people also say that if you prefer online gaming with friends you should lean XBox and if you are more of the single player type the you should lean PS4.

Oh it looks like that was the Bull Dozier.  There you have it.

That's exactly my point.  Chadstroma admitting in his original post looking for input that he wasn't a very serious gamer, so for people to debate technical benchmarks, that aren't going to be observable to someone just killing time, is pointless.

So, telling a casual gamer they should go PS4 because of specs is fanboy, arguing that with serious gamers is a different story.

IVe been working on a few of those things - front/back flip to get into position better, I always hang back on the tip off, and I've tried more just getting powerful hits.  I figure if I keep putting the ball in front of the goal, good things happen. I tend to play defense unless it's a breakaway type situation.

Heres a a goal from my lunch break earlier.

Aren't you being an XBox fanboy (without technical specs) by saying that the only reason to get a PS4 is by being a fanboy?

There are other reasons to choose one or the other; like different exclusive titles, different controllers and different core competencies (PS4 for single players and XBox One for online gamers).  I guess I don't understand your rationale for saying that the XBox One is the obvious choice for casual gamers.

BTW I don't own a console but have been researching them for quite awhile.  I would be happy with either but the whole exclusive title thing is really a sticking point.

Read his comment above, he was about as unbiased as you can be between the two systems.   He said the same thing you just said basically.  I'm guessing he'd say the exact thing if someone recommended xbone over PS

Nice goal.  I don't think you ALWAYS want to hang back on the tip.  If you're the only one on the wing you want to go for it.  If there's two on the wing (like in you vid) I like to flip back to the turbo... results in some goal opportunities on occasion.
