Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (3 Viewers)

I was in the middle of editing to say:

ETA - MY RL friend still loves Madden. When we play seasons together we both throw for 400-1000 yards a game with 4-12 TDs. There are occasional games where say you dont get off to a fast start and the stats arent ridiculous but I have found that momentum is everything with Madden. Point being - I agree to disagree with your stance on the gameplay - in respect to the part you mentioned.

I also want to say- while Madden isn't my cup of tea, its still a solid football game, I just think it could be so much better but its just a cash cow now and that ship has sailed.
My kids play online leagues with a group of friends.  They start with a fantasy draft.  The older one waited on QB and ended up with Trace McSorely as his QB.  No worries, they are four season in and McSorely owns every single game and season long passing record, as well as four straight MVPs.

Hoping to try out the Beyond update in No Man's Sky tonight.  They've definitely come a long way, and as a company I'll be looking to support Hello Games future projects.

Waiting for all the glitches to get ironed out over the next month, but Beyond is what's going to finally make me get PSVR. Going to be so immersive.

I'm looking forward to The Outer Worlds.  This is being made by the same company that made Fallout: New Vegas, which was hands-down the best of the modern Fallout games and it's not even close.  My hopes are kind of tempered because I've gotten the impression that it's a "smaller" game somehow, but I would like a Fallout/Elder Scrolls type game that brings back real player choice and reverses the dumbing-down of the RPG elements.
Greedfall looks pretty good, but I'm not sure how in-depth the system is.  Information is pretty sparse considering it's out next month.

Greedfall to me looks interesting, but also like it should have been part of the first wave of this gen's games.

Ironically, this is probably also true of Outerworlds, but I give it a pass...I guess because it's meant to scratch such a specific itch for Fallout fans. And because it's been made very clear that it's a smaller game than most open world RPG monstrosities that come out today.

Greedfall appears to be about the same length - 60 hours or so.   I'm a sucker for stuff that's a bit unique and both of these look pretty good from that perspective.

The past 18 months or so spoiled me.  I usually play about 1 to 2 games a year, but I feel like I had been playing every weekend for the past 18 months.  Now that there's nothing new on the horizon for me until March, I kind of miss gaming.

My next game will be Watch Dogs 3.  I'm hoping it's as fun as the second one, but I worry that what they're advertising might not live up to the hype.

I don't think I was aware of the existence of Greedfall -- I'll have to keep an eye on that one.  I don't particularly care for the aesthetic design, but I can set that aside if it's a good game otherwise.

Looks cool. Done with single player epic RPGs though.

Not a Borderlands guy?

I do really like the Watch Dogs series game mechanics but I thought the last installment, while definitely fun to play, really missed the mark for tone.  The whole rag-tag band of puckish anti-establishment hackers who are also murderous, parkour ninja-assassins was difficult to reconcile.  It ultimately worked out well when I adjusted my playstyle to entirely non-lethal about 1/4-1/3 of the way through my run. That became a ton of fun, but the whole lethal options really didn't work for these characters and I thought it was a misstep.

The missions also became a bit repetitive in the sense that you knew there was always going to be a convenient vent for your drones to work through.  But what game doesn't get repetitive over the course of 40+ hours of gameplay?

I'm definitely going to play WD3 but I do hope they clean up the characters a bit.

Started Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Man they just keep churning these suckers out, and they are all fun to play.

I really like how the missions level with your character so you don't entirely overpower yourself relative to the tasks you've acquired.  If you acquire a quest at level 10 but don't get around to it until you are level 15, the quest will have leveled with you.  The world seems to keep leveling with you so no region ever becomes truly easy. The mercenary system is also pretty cool, those guys get very tough to deal with, particularly when so many situations are not mano-a-mano. I also like the conquest battles and those really become tough as you have to rush all over the battle field looking for captains and mercs to kill before you run out of time.

My character is definitely powerful but not overpowered.  I can still wade through 6-8 grunts easy-peasy but if a captain shows up, and they always will, that changes the dynamic dramatically.  If a mercenary shows up as well you need to be prepared to run, particularly at higher levels when they often have an animal companion and seem to chain "unblockable" attacks with elemental effects at will.

They also seem to have really upped the ante on resource acquisition.  You really need to keep working to churn out leather, wood, iron, cash etc to keep upgrading your gear.  And you rarely seem to have acquired enough to upgrade everything at one time but you have to upgrade regularly to keep up with the leveling enemies.  I keep waiting  for some sort of passive income source like in earlier games but I don't think it's gonna happen.  And I'm okay with that.

The in-Animus story has also been very solid so far, I completely lost track of what is happening out of the Animus 6 or 7 games ago, and I find my characters back-story (playing Kassandra, not sure if it is different with Alexios).

One thing that I am finding particularly frustrating, and it's ultimately a small thing, is the lack of body disposal/indoor hiding options. No armoires or baskets to duck into to avoid detection or hide your clean indoor kills.  So you either need to leave the body in the open or lug it outside and chuck it over a wall, which is often far less intuitive than it should be.

The other drawback, if you consider it such, is that the world is just too damn big.  Seriously with all the story quests, side quests, radiant quests and inummerable collectibles it is just too much.  Too much awesome produces quickly diminishing returns.

Overall a very fun game so far, I like it more than Origins and I think it is one of the better installments of the series.

And #### that boar!!!

Not really a big gamer.  And I only like single player games.  Also, I'm not good at shooters, usually, so when I play, I have to play on an easier setting.

So with that said, I only play a handful of games a decade.  I was surprised by how much I liked WD2.  I get what you're saying, but I don't really get into morality things in gaming.  I give games an even bigger pass than movies.

I get it.  I am not asking for my video games and movies to be realistic but I do like it when they are have cohesive storytelling and characters.  They're never going to nail it 100% but WD2 just seemed like they mailed that aspect in.

It's weird, because I remember you bringing this up last time we talked about WD2, and I remember thinking even then that I didn't even notice it.  Even looking back, I can't really think of anything that seemed like they went over the line.  Is it because I didn't play WD1?  Coming into that game, I just assumed they were a group of hackers who also would shoot at people, just like every other video game character.  And again, I'm not saying "I'm right and you're wrong."  Not at all.  I just think it's weird that I didn't even notice it.

It's because they were 20 something hackers who wanted to tag, drink, party had playful repartee and zero dark past.  But at the same time you had the option to 3D print assault rifles and bazookas and murderously rip into gangs, police, security guards killing everything in your path etc.

Playing non-lethal is the only thing that made sense for those characters.  Going in guns blazing simply distracted from the game for me.

Listen, I am playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey and I kill the living #### out of everything that crosses my path (everything is permitted) so I don't have a problem with the violence aspect of it. But I do want to be entertained more than just mindlessly button mashing and that is where story comes into play. I just like my story telling to at least try and make sense and develop characters whose actions try and match their tone.  I am not unique in that regard but I also know that I am probably not in the majority from that perspective either.

After all, it is a role playing game and, to be fair, I thought WD2 because a lot more fun once I realized what I found offputting about it and changed my play style accordingly.  So good on them for making that an option.

The original Watch Dogs did have a protagonist, Aiden Pierce, with a military background and a deep trauma in his past.  Taking down the guys who caused that trauma by any means necessary did make sense in that context. A kill run in WD2 was just weird.

Does anyone play that Game Theft Auto game with the casino?  How does that work?  Can you gamble as your character or something?

Also, if someone wanted to buy this game AND play other fun games ON-LINE....would he/she be better with an XBOX or a Playstation?

TIA

In general he/she should get whatever system the majority of their friends have.

Again, I get that.  Like I said, I just didn't notice it because I assumed they were a violent group, I guess.  Either that or because shooting people in video games doesn't seem that out of the ordinary.

I think it's probably impossible to continually upgrade your stuff.  I have a primary melee weapon and bow that happen to have quirks that I like, so I've kept them updated each time I level up, but upgrading armor seems like it would be a massive grind.  So I've just reconciled myself to the fact that I'm going to be regularly swapping out old armor for stuff that I just looted.

Yup.Pinning my hopes on the Outer Wolds, too. Also hoping for The Last of Us 2

Yeah that is where I am settling as well.  Trying to acquire a set of legendary armor and then keep it upgraded seems like it would be a massive undertaking.

I am also not a big fan of some of the ability upgrades.  Four melee slots and four bow slots is kind of limiting.  It seems like you run out of upgrade options that don't require assignment to a slot pretty quickly.  Then you just upgrade abilities because there are no other options.

Really?  Not a knock on you as I don't expect everyone to follow the stories the way I do (I really don't play games that don't have a solid solo campaign) but I find that shocking.  It seemed pretty clear from very early in the game that these kids were absolutely not killers, they were misfits at worse.

I'm around level 35 or so.  I got a full set of legendary armor off one of the cultist leaders I tracked down.  At one point, each individual piece of armor was going to set me back 400+ pieces of leather (plus other stuff) to bring it up to my current level.  Now granted, that was a jump of like 10 levels, not just one, but there's no way I'm grinding for that much leather, wood, etc.  The money wasn't even the limiting constraint -- it was the materials.

Money isn't exactly easy either but you're right.  I find that leather is the real PITA to churn.

I'm not saying they were killers, but they were going after bad guys, weren't they?  And bad guys that were trying to kill them.  Honestly it's been so long I don't remember it all, but I felt like it escalated in a way where it was somewhat believable.  Again, VIDEO GAME BELIEVABLE.  It was kind of like they started out as this group that was menacing, fighting the good fight, but quickly turned into a real life or death battle.

And for the record, I don't think either opinion is correct.  To me it was like in the movies when the good guys break into some place to get an object and they are killing or shooting the guards in that place.  Are those guards bad people?  Probably had families that counted on them.  And they were just doing their jobs.  May not have even known their boss was a villain.  But oh well.  The good guys needed the book in the safe.

That's how I chalked it up.  Or am I remembering wrong?  Because, honestly, that could very well be.  The other night when I got in bed, I said to my wife I was surprised our daughter was asleep so early.  She said "Are you joking?"  I said, "No. Her bedroom light is out."  Then she looked at me quizzically and said, "I took her to her friend's house.  Remember?  After dinner, we left for about 30 minutes while I took her there?"

I do not remember any of that happening.  So, in summary, that's why the Yankees won't make it to the World Series this year.  Pitching just isn't deep enough for the playoffs.  Especially with other teams that are so good.

I recently got a PC capable of playing some games again, and I picked up Tyranny by the same developer.  I have high hopes but probably won’t get around to it for awhile.

Whenever you find a legendary armor piece, it defaults to your level. When you get the fifth piece of the set, the whole set upgrades to your level automatically (just the once, though, they don't level up after that unless you upgrade them). You do also get a special perk if you have the whole set equipped.

At some point it seems pointless to keep anything other than legendary items. Everything else you just disassemble to get the components you need to upgrade the legendary stuff.

Right, that's what I mean.  The whole set was level 23 or something like that.  When I got into the mid-30s, it was way too expensive to upgrade and was getting badly out-classed by blue and purple armor pieces.

Hunt cultists. Most of them have legendary armor pieces. Typically one branch has a full set.

Can any of you guys who have the Xbox game pass please play a game called Hellblade:Senua’s Sacrifice?

Game looks amazing. Confirm for me that it’s awful. I’ve been dying to play it.

No it is very good. The atmosphere is incredible. I don't know if you know the backstory behind development but the game is meant to simulate what someone with psychosis might go through. That feeling of never knowing what's real and what's fake gives the whole game another level of depth.

Really good game. 8.5/10 for me. Combat gets a little repetitive later on but enough to be interesting.

Love screwing around in gta. So yea, you gamble with your character. They have slots, roulette, blackjack (4 decks), three card poker, and horse racing. You just use currency that you earn from the game to gamble with in the casino. As for the second part, completely agree with the other post. Whatever system your friends use is best if you’re open to either. If you got any gta related questions, just tag me and I’ll reply next time I’m on!

I get that as @bcdjr1 posted it as well but my point is that the cost of collecting those legendary sets & upgrading them constantly to keep them viable seems potentially prohibitive.

I agree with @IvanKaramazov that it seems much more practical to just keep your gear leveled by acquiring it from leveled kills. Mercenaries are a great source for farming  epic gear.  Honestly, I haven't really looked into the numbers but I think the purple epic gear, with the four buffs, is almost as good as the legendary stuff (better in some respects as the fourth perk isn't dependent on having the whole set) with it's three buffs plus the whole set perk.

Except you can change the appearance of any piece of equipment to look like any other piece of equipment that you have already found. At one point you can be fully armored but look like you're wearing a rag bikini and all oiled up.

It took me like 20 hours to realize that you could do this.  I felt so much better about scrounging for armor when I finally figured out that I can make the helmet look like whatever I want, or just toggle it off altogether.

Didn't get to it last night but played a little today.  It is a little glitchy, but nothing that has blocked me yet.
Ok, question. I’m doing the ‘Space Anomaly’ mission. I have now warped to over 30 systems, and it keeps telling me the target is in another system. And there is no end in sight. I probably have close to 10 hours into this one mission. In the galaxy map, I have current mission selected, and there are green lines seemingly leading me towards the anomaly. It will show 5 jumps at a time, but I never get any closer. I’m going insane and thinking about re-starting.

Any thoughts?

Possibly the GotY last year? Or whenever it came out. Awesome experience and well worth the $40 retail or Game Pass price. Sorry GB. It is a game that is a must to play with a headset when you can apply your full attention to the experience.

Agreed, that seems like the best strategy, for amour and your secondary weapon in particular.  Engravings are cheap even if their buff maxes out at 15% (something I read online) which is lower a lot of spawned stuff it still seems like the better way to go.

I do get attached to a primary weapon and am typically choosing to keep my primary weapon and bow upgraded try to loot everything else.

I also just realized that the game really incentivizes working up the Mercenary Tiers with lots of big discounts on Blacksmith and Ship Building merch as you progress towards Tier 1.

Totally forgot about that, thanks for the reminder.  My Kassandra ain't gonna look like Frankenstein's monster no more!!!

About to get our third Xbox for the game room/man cave.  My older son is about to start his senior year, so I'm a little anxious to take any advantage of my limited daily time with him I have left.  He, I and my youngest (about to be a junior) love playing NBA2k.  We're getting the third Xbox so we can play 3 on 3 as a team at the playground.

I coached both of them in grade school and middle school, so the three of us are on the same page basketball wise.  It will be interesting to see if it works in the game.

Thanks for reminding me of this one.  I've been waiting for the PS4 version to go on sale, and it's currently $20 on Amazon so I just picked it up.  I've heard nothing but good things about it, aside from it being short (which is fine at this price point).

Also, the previews of Control look pretty awesome.  I'm not buying on day one because god only knows what console performance will be like, but it seems really promising.
