Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (2 Viewers)

pretty sure they just get added automatically when the game updates.. on PC at least
Yeah same on console. Usually on console right when you boot up the console before you even enter the game, it will tell you there's an update for so-and-so game. Then it will start downloading the update.

Yeah, Elden Ring is no joke.  They talked about this game being more accessible to new players than most Souls titles, but I'm finding it quite challenging and I'm good at these games.  Leveling seems kind of slow -- both your character and weapons.  I decided to stick with my mage, thinking that I can always just level up my combat skills, but it feels like you're locked into your starting class and stuck with your starter weapons a little longer than usual too.  I mean, NOW I've got some new weapons to play with so it's all good.  I still need to get something that scales with magic though.

Best open world game ever so far, for me at least.

No wonder I was finding this game hard -- I somehow skipped a bunch of very early game stuff.  I don't have any weapon ashes equipped, and I can't summon those wolves.  I thought that was coming later, but I just overlooked it.  Idiot.

Nah.  Going through the game blind makes it fun.   Enjoy it.   I missed all kinds of stuff too.  Trying not to get any help makes it better imo

All of this. I was telling everyone how the Souls games aren’t all that hard so I’m embarrassed to say this one is kicking my ###. I’ve only managed to kill one of those super tall tree monster dudes but every boss has mollywop’d me.

I did see something cool today. A few undead knights were fighting some little little Jawa looking enemies.

I was just happy to start elden ring and see it was what I expected.  Another great souls game.

Not surprisingly, this game is a lot more manageable now that I can summon spirit animals and have a +2 greatsword.  And a torch so I see where the hell I'm going in some of the darker areas. And a better staff.

I still need to do a better job gathering upgrade stones, and I need to the sorcery that lets you buff your main weapon, but I feel like I'm on track now.

Ive been kinda playing two characters at once. Last night I killed my first boss and found a npc selling sorcery. Almost missed him since the room was dark and the door is black. I need to find a new weapon that scales with int. I’ll probably buy all the sorcerers I can and then put this character on hold while I go back to my STR build. I’m bored of spamming the same spell.

A torch makes a huge difference. Did you find the jellyfish? It has DOT damage and is somewhat tankish.

How similar is this game to Skyrim?

Got it, but I haven't used it yet.  Stumbling onto the jellyfish and not being able to use it was an obvious clue that I had missed something -- a quick trip to the wiki showed that yep, I completely whiffed the spirit bell or whatever it's called.  Plus a bunch of other stuff.  Fixed now.

I would not describe this game as being Skyrim-like to anybody who is not already super-familiar with Souls games.  This is a Souls game through and through.  It's very different from Dark Souls and Bloodborne because the open world area really is open world and not just a little series of hamster paths to choose from.  You can go pretty much anywhere you want right off the bat with no loading screens or anything standing in your way.  (I'm sure there are some bosses that I can't currently beat who are blocking me from other areas of the game, but you know what I mean -- there is a very large map that's open to you from the beginning, and the map probably just gets larger as you go.)  But aside from that, everything about this game is "Dark Souls."

The combat is just as challenging as any Souls title.  The NPCs are just as inscrutable, and their quest lines are going to be trivially easy to screw up, as in all the other games.  This isn't a game like Skyrim or Witcher where you go off and do a lot of story-driven side quests with lots of engaging NPCs who give you a bunch of dialogue options and new waypoints or anything like that.  It's mostly you walking around and exploring a world in which everything you encounter wants to kill you and is perfectly capable of succeeding.

It would be like if Skyrim increased the combat difficulty tenfold, while also removing all non-combat related solutions to in-game problems.

I'm level 28 and have not killed a single boss yet.  Game is so ####### hard but I can't stop playing.

My biggest gripe with open world games is how easy they are in general, and there's never any real need to do side stuff. In this game, the side stuff is mandatory, at least for me.  I feel like I need to complete every location to even stand a chance.

Level 28, good job that's alot of runes

There is one of those big pumpkin-head guys serving as a boss -- he guards an important sorcery vendor.  Last night he wrecked me a few times and it was pretty clear that I needed to go back and do a better job gearing up my character.  I came back this morning and took him down no problem with just a better staff.  (There's a staff that has S-scaling with INT that you can pick up in a poison swamp area without needing to fight anything.  Good early game staff for mages.  "Meteorite staff" if you want to look up the details of how to get it).  I didn't even have a good weapon or spirits yet.  Glintstone pebble was enough.

Now I'm looking forward to going back to a couple of forts that were way too much for me yesterday afternoon. Unfortunately I have to work today so I won't get to it for a while.

Oh and I also stumbled onto my first "hidden" dungeon.  Basically I found what was essentially a hole in the ground.  I couldn't see the bottom, but it seemed odd for a hole just to be sitting in this little out-of-the-way spot and I didn't have any runes on me anyway, so I figured why not just jump down there?  I'll probably die but NBD.  Surprisingly I landed at the bottom with no damage at all, took out some very weak enemies, and then got chased by some re-spawning skeletons until I accidentally got to a very small dungeon.  This is what I want more of.

This game sounds like it might be popular enough to break into its own thread.
It's February and I'm already 10/10 confident (based on current popularity but also due to the complete lack of major releases coming this year) that this will be GOTY in most end year awards.

Start it up.

ETA: One of the reviews mentions an early boss that was really hard, and what made it hard was not figuring out what to do to beat it, but to keep doing that dodge/strike move for 10 minutes straight without getting hit once (because one hit will kill you).  That’s the kind of #### that frustrates me.
How many of us want to bet that the boss in question is Tree Sentinel, and the reviewer just refused to go around him?

Well, as someone who is not interested in the game, I’m not volunteering, but someone should probably do so.

Finished Greedfall, and nothing about the back half of the game moved me off of the position that this is a B-/C+ BioWare clone. I’d only recommend it for serious fans of the action RPG genre who really are jonesing for a game of that type.

the problem with GamePass is that I’m kind of paralyzed by the number of choices as to what to play next.

So I’ve never played any of the Souls games and had no intention to, but I've had a copy of Demon’s Souls laying around that came with a PS5 bundle, so just for fun I started it up last night. Worked my way through the first level (Gates of B-something) until I got killed by some guy I didn't see around a corner. OK, cool, to be expected.

Respawned at the beginning of the level. And all the bad guys respawned as well. OK, work my way back through all the stuff I just did, get a bit further and die again.

Respawn at the beginning of the level. Work my way back through all the stuff I just did twice, get a bit further and die again.

Respawn at the beginning of the level. Uninstalled the game.

I'm sure the game has a fun level of difficult challenges, but this isn’t hard, it’s just tedious. Elden Ring sounds really cool but if this is what a Souls game is like, I’m definitely out.

A couple of things….

Demon Souls was one of the harder Souls games for me.

You needed to level up a little bit before just going further an further. Things respawn so you can farm them for money to upgrade your equipment and your character. Basically you want to level up your endurance (so you can swing/dodge/take hits with your shield easier/longer).

When you’re one shot’n enemies it’s probably time to move onto the next area/go for the boss.

It’s pretty much every RPG you’ve ever played but doesn’t have incredibly boring and awful combat. Combat is what makes the game.

Just finished HZD yesterday. The combat and robo fights towards the end are really fun once you are leveled up. Very interesting concept, always enjoyable when you see a dev take risks on new, out there ideas...something that's increasingly rare these days.

Will probably be a long while before I touch HFW, but I'll get to it eventually. Now I take a break for a week or two and will decide what I move onto next.

I have 3 main missions left in HFW and frankly am not looking forward to them, I don't know how I got this far because I am horrible in battle

I'm still enjoying HFW, but I begrudgingly turned down the difficulty yesterday.  Had a side mission against a Thunderjaw and just could not beat it at level 20.  I'm actually debating on keeping it turned down or making the loot 'easy'.  I'm torn.  Just so frustrating to get enough parts to update gear/armor/etc.

Guess I'm getting old...  :(

I've been playing normal and level 30. But yeah upgrades especially ammunition is the suck

I hope to not turn this down but anything is possible lol

43 hours and finished the main story on HFW.

Really enjoyed it. Like 50% complete.  I rarely ever try for 100.  I'll probably play a few more of the side quests still and some other stuff.

I really enjoyed it. Well done

The last battle is ridiculous, I almost raged quit.

Damn, I just started and having not played the original in so long was really struggling against a damn stationary snake.  Really hope those skills start returning to me.

There are times I feel like I got it all figured out and then times I feel like I never played.

I was never great but I definitely did not have enough ammo for the end lol

You guys are pressing R3 to slow down timing when you're aiming, right?

I'm playing on HARD and while I am definitely dying a lot it does not seem unfair.

Ya remembered that a little bit into the fight.  Recalling all the controls has been part of the challenge.

Yeah but it only lasts so long and even though I'm level 37 my weapons aren't super upgraded or is my cache.

My biggest challenge was

Final boss

####### stormbirds

Specter

So I played exactly one other Assassin Creed game before - that was the last one and I didn't really enjoy it too much.

That being said - I downloaded Valhalla this past weekend and so far am really enjoying it.   I'm confused on a few things but overall I am enjoying it.

Not sure what all the icons are over my health bar.     And I unlocked a stealth attack skill but cant figure out how to stealth attack.

And I definitely didnt understand the beginning about merging paths

I just started Control yesterday, and wow, I'm actually kinda blown away at how gripping it is early on. Full on supernatural thriller vibes. Can't remember a game I've played before that I can compare it to.

You didn't like Odyssey but like Valhalla? I'm the complete opposite.
Yep. I'm really really enjoying it. I know this will wane but I'm addicted to getting all the gold pieces and mysteries.   I barely touched the main quests. I can't beat that ####er in the cave though

I’ve been playing Hunter: Call of the Wild for a few months now. Just blown away with the expansive open areas of not just the United States but other parts of the world to hunt. Also a wide variety of animals whether you prefer hunting for Whitetail, Blacktail, Elk, & Moose in the pacific northwest of the US or prefer something a little more adventurous in Africa, Europe or South America. There are at least a dozen reserves to choose from depending on your mood.
I’m sure this game has been covered here so I won’t go into detail but everything you associate with hunting whether it be tree stands, lures, paying attention to the wind so animals can’t pick up your scent, buy a hunting dog, keeping your noise level down, And most importantly learning the art of where to place your shot whether you are using a rifle, shotgun, or bow. A well placed shot to the heart/lungs and you can drop a moose where he stands. Whiff on the shot and you will be tracking your prey for the next 30 minutes.
Superb graphics and realism will keep you entertained for hours. The more experience you gain the better weapons, equipment, etc.. there is to purchase.
Plenty of DLCs to download that offer up special guns and more maps to choose from.
This game has everything for someone who has never hunted a day in their life to the most experienced hunter.
Highly recommend. 4.5/5

I'm old too. I fought a Thunderjaw on that side quest with the guy who wanted to trade machine hearts for water (which might be the one you're doing?). Finally figured out that I needed to activate the focus, highlight the disc gun thingy and then shoot that off and use it against him. (Aloy made some comment about grabbing guns off dead Ravagers, but I couldn't find any.) I was probably around level 15-20.

I'm having fun just doing side quests. My main method of attack is finding some high perch and firing basic arrows at the giant machine for 20 minutes while ducking behind large rocks for cover, like a coward.

Yea, I used to do that in the original game too. That thing can do some devastating damage.
