Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (4 Viewers)

I'm looking for a particular genre of video game, but I'm not sure if it's ever been made.

What I'd like is a WWII strategy sim (turn based, probably) where you can either the Axis or the Allies against each other basically from the get-go. It wouldn't follow historical battles, but rather each game would play out differently based on the outcomes of each battle previously. Sort of like a "choose your own adventure" WWII strategy game. It would be fun to see if you could play as the Nazis and actually fight off the Allies, or play as Japan and try to broker a deal with Russia to move them to your side, etc.

Maybe I'm crazy to even think that a game like this exists, but I think it would be fun.

It could even be a series of games. WWI, etc.
Hearts of Iron series might be old but it is very close to what you are describing. there is also the classic SSI games like Panzer General, which was adapted to different theaters of combat. similarly, there is also the Close Combat series. best thing about most of these games is that they're very cheap to get.
Hearts of Iron III from 2009 would be exactly what you are looking for.
I'm installing this now.

Sounds like Axis and Allies. I don't know that they ever made a good video game adaptation.

If you've never played Mass Effect 2, don't ever try it. It has completely consumed my entire life over the past two weeks.

The best is being half good/half bad. There's something enormously gratifying about shoving a smart mouthed bad guy out of a window 200 stories above the ground.

Went through my first playthrough as half good & half bad with male Shepard. I'm about to finish my second playthrough with totally renegade female Shepard.

Played the new Madden Demo. Mixed feelings. Looks great, but something is off about the geometry or something. It also looks like they are really leaning towards what 2K looked like, but with Madden game play. It's considerably faster, which I personally hate.

I just got a text from a buddy who says everybody is flipping out because they have changed the angle and EA doesn't have an option of change it.

Im going to wait and play over Slutts house before I buy it.

Elder Scrolls IV is worse. Far worse.
Skyrim is coming soon... good bye outside. :bye:
The game play videos of this look incredible. 400+ hours of game play = divorce
I doubt I'll shave, bathe or sleep when this comes out.

was gonna buy Dead Rising 2 cheap. Anyone play it, was it worth playing or did it get boring after an hour?
If you liked the first, you'll love the 2nd. More of the same zombie killing but combo weapons are so satisfying to pull off. Less physical moves that are effective though. Probably to promote the combo weapons. Plus you can put a chainsaw on a dirtbike. Very fun.

loved the first but got a little bored with it after 20 hours and never finished it. For 20 bucks I have to pull trigger on it I guess, thanks

You will have a zoomed camera option on the retail version. Also this was an early build demo (before E3) and you can change the play speed down to very slow which feels great.I love the demo. I think this will be the best Madden in the series. The DPP (dynamic player performance) is awesome. The new broadcast angels and presentation looks amazing. Then again I am a long time Madden player (20 years) but the revamped franchise mode, fully editable rosters in franchise, the new and improved gameplanning feature, the overhauled AI logic in franchise management, free agent auction, new scouting, overhauled NCAA 12 draft class import, the revamped random generated draft classes inside of Madden (if you choose not to import), full player tendancies (which are also editable), and over 20 player roles (making it's return from Madden 2005-2007) is making this a day one purchase for me.BTW you can get the game at toysrus.com for 44.99 with free shipping. You won't get it release day...but who cares. It's not like I don't have a gazzillion other games I am not playing. So you will get it 6-7 days after release. The game feels great.

Does get repetitive. Some of the things they changed though are that the AI on the survivors is not completely ######ed now. They will follow you as far as you go. Just have to make sure they are in range of you before you go through a door. It gives you a symbol if they are so it makes it easy to move from one area to the next without worrying about your idiots following you. Combat is still mostly melee but still fun. I think you'll enjoy it.

Recommended platform? Got all 3.
PC usually is going to take you the farther with user mods and whatnot if you enjoy PC gaming. I generally prefer couch, controller and big screen so given the choice I normally go platform.
Yeah, I'm torn here. Ugh.This will be the only game I buy when it releases in the previous 18 months. Can't imagine it is a letdown, but still a little worried after the Civ 5 debacle.

Hearts of Iron III is so dense. I've never played a game like it. The learning curve is bad... I need the Sony "my first grand strategy game" version.

I just finished it. Load time is infuriating....particularly between cut scenes. AI is a lot better....it actually really benefits you to rescue people, arm them and then take on some of the human psychopaths with their help. One time, I had a 10 person posse that just steamrolled zombies. As far as the game goes....it's basically the same as the first. Timed missions with a central theme mission that if you fail in it....you can still play through to the end. It's relatively entertaining, the combined weapons are great (nothing like a pitchfork/shotgun, kayak paddle/chainsaw and jewel/flahlight). The save function is better(three slots). I would have loved to see a sniper mini game in this (maybe in the Terror Is Reality onlline multiplayer)....where they put you on the top of a building and you need to find and snipe "celebrity" zombies....kind of like what they were doing in the Dawn of the Dead remake.

So I preordered BF3 at Origin and got the free MOH download. Got another email today saying thanks for preordering BF3, go ahead and take Dead Space 2 for free, as well. Well, OK.

Yup, thanks for the link Corp, I already had MoH, had chosen ME2 as my free game with purchase, and EA said..."hey, you want Dead Space 2?" - Like MC - Duh...yes! :pickle: :moneybag:

I haven't played Madden for years now since I hate playing defense from behind the offense. Do they have a defensive POV yet?

I would love a WW2 version that is in the Total War style. Strategic map, RTS tactics for battles.

i'm surprised that the modding community for TW hasn't done that.

If you look at forums, there are threads of people asking about one, but there isn't one to be found.

After running through my marathon paced, large world Civ 5 game (lost a UN victory to the Persians which I could have foiled if I had paid attention and bought off a bunch of city states prior to the vote), I moved on to Tropico 3. Decent fun there in the Sim City vein with a twist. This weekend, I finally started Mass Effect. Although the combat is different, this plays very much like KOTOR in terms of atmosphere, maps, character development, teamates, etc.

That's fine as I enjoy that style for the most part. Not really a fan of talk to those teamates ad nauseum to find out there story, etc etc ala KOTOR and Dragon Age. Nonetheless, the setting/store is good and the game is fun.

Stick with it. ME1 is just an appetizer for ME2 with the latter being far superior in both looks and gameplay than the first. And I liked the first.

I just picked up Arkham Asylum yesterday. Is Arkham City going to be similar in terms of gameplay? Or is the map going to be more open?

I'm 3 hrs in, and somehow it just hasn't captivated me yet. Maybe it was hyped so much in this thread that I built up unrealistic expectations. Does it take a little more time to really get rolling? I'm trying to figure out if I should motivate myself to keep playing...

Yes. The initial stages are there to get you used to the controls and the universe itself if you didn't play the first one. It's after your return to The Citadel that it really gets moving.

I meant, after you get through Freedom's Progress.

I've got a copy of LA Noire on hand, but it keeps crashing my PS3 before the game even really begins. Reading online, it sounds like this was a fairly common problem that just never got resolved (primarily because Rock Star is in denial that there even is a problem). Very strange. Apparently, this has affected both PS3 and XBox. Did this happen to anyone else?

I rented LA Noire a few weeks ago. The only bug I encountered was that the copy I brought home kept getting boring and repetitive, unlike the good copies that reviewers apparently got. Otherwise it ran just fine.
