Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (4 Viewers)

Ive never been more disapointed in an FBG recommendation than i was with Borderlands 1. I didnt play coop, and that game could not have been more medicore. I can see how it might of been fun in multiplayer, however.
I enjoyed it. Played it with three of the four characters solo.
I didn't say it was terrible, but it didnt hold up at all against other first person RPGs (eg fallout) or FPSs (eg COD). I don't know what above average features it presented unless you are a huge fan of the suspense of seeing what weapons your enemies were going to drop, Diablo style.

Soooo... for the Xcom folks. I think my first game is winding down here. I suffered from a severe lack of engineers the first couple months. I gather the only way to get engineers is to select the proper mission/reward? I don't see any other methods for acquiring those guys. Also, maybe I'm missing it, but I cannot for the life of me find where to build new interceptors. It never comes up in the engineering build menus. Any hints?
You need to go to the Hangers and you can buy more interceptors there.I used the USA as my first home base for dominance in the air. This game is insanely good.

I don't play "normal" FPS games. Never played COD, Battlefield, MW, whatever all those modern shooters are. Those don't interest me at all. So I imagine I have a different perspective than most when talking "shooters."

So how long did it take to complete?
Ummm... yea... If by "complete" you mean "decimated", then I think I survived for 3 months. I think I got pretty unlucky with acquiring engineers as for the first month and a half I never had the opportunity to get more of those guys. So much stuff I could have built but couldn't.I looked all over the hangar for the option to build more interceptors. I'll go and look again!

I see Borderlands more as a FPS version of Diablo than a FPS in the standard sense or even in the RPG sense. It's more about playing the missions and loot hunting. And that's also why I find it more fun to play with others. I hope this makes sense. It also makes explains the different feeling vs Fallout and CoD.

The game has only been out for like two days? I was talking real time, not game time if that's the confusion.

anyone picking up Dishonored? Got amazing reviews
Picked it up today. I'll probably get an hour or two into it tonight and post something tomorrow.Reviews looked real good and I was looking for a new RPG.
played for a couple hours. Took about 45 min to do the tutorial, which is also the back story for the game. I was stealthing everywhere all the time so my movement was pretty slow. There are a fair amount of cutscenes, but not overly so to this point. It kind of reminds me of the old thief games, you can choose to stealth past people or fight them all head on.I havent instantly fallen in love with this game like I did Skyrim. Let me get a little further into the game before I make a recommendation. I am not saying its a bad game to this point but its not one where I keep saying I'll quit after I turn this quest in and then go do another quest and its 3 am before I realize it.
I watched a review for it and it looks amazing. Looks like a game you can really immerse yourself into. Seems to be a good mix between a Bioshock and Thief set in a alternate London.
The graphics are very nice. A mix of bioshock and thief is a pretty good explanation. I have learned 1 magic spell at this point which is teleport and and a beating heart which shows you where runes are. Runes are how you level up your character. You also get runes as quest(side quest) rewards, at least at this early stage.Like I said its enjoyable, but it hasnt grabbed me like Skyrim did. I think part of my issue is your character NEVER talks. You can interact with people and they talk to you, but you choose a reply and the other character responds. Maybe I am spoiled by Dragon Age, Skyrim, and War of the North. I just dont feel as attached to my character to this point.I am still barely starting the game, so this is subject to change. Just trying to be objective.
I restarted last night because the wife wanted to watch but was lost on the story line. I am not as far along since I quit to watch the Orioles last night.I did learn one thing if you stealth and dont kill people you encounter less Rats(human eating little bastards--great disposal of bodies)and the ending is not as dark. I have no clue what the ending is about but it was one of the tool tips when loading a page.I still dont feel attached to my character. I'll update on Monday since I am sure to play some this weekend.

Depends on the games you are talking about. I had no problem picking up the Mass Effects, Fallout 3 or Bioshock 2 for example used and much cheaper. However, more and more games have heavy multiplayer or co-op aspects now. If you are playing 6 months or a year later you are missing out on a large part of the fun/experience.

For instance, I've tried slogging thru Borderlands 2 solo a few times the last two weeks and its not the same game at all as it is playing co-op. Or try picking up a Modern Warfare game after 6 months when all the teenagers have memorized every multiplayer map forwards and backwards.
Yea, true I guess. I simply don't do online play at all. I have played one PS3 game online and it just reiterated my opinion of the online community. So, as a strictly single player type, I guess my perspective is much different. I simply don't care about the online aspect. I don't consider a game that doesn't have a good single player component to it.As for Borderlands 2, I love the single player aspect. Not sure why it's considered dull single player (in reference to the other person's comment, not yours).
Borderlands 2 is phenomenal solo. I have not even given a second thought to playing co op yet and have already completed the first play through. I might do some co op for trophy hunting only but it could not be more fun for me solo.
I am glad to hear this. I have been thinking about picking up but I generally prefer games that are good solo as I am not much for playing online. All the advertisement makes it look like you almost have to play co-op.

This month's Game Informer review gave it a 9.75 out of 10 and barely mentioned the co-op aspect of it. I'm enjoying it immensely solo as are many others. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you pick it up.

It's definitely good single player, and plenty of fun co-op also. Can't go wrong.

Oh, sorry - I played maybe 6-7 real time hours before coming to the conclusion I was in a no-win scenario. Started a new game last night and was getting toasted by sectoids. This game is a challenge.

Haven't commented because I've been playing XCom. Loved the first one. And Ive been saying for years all they need to do is take that formula and update the graphics and gameplay a bit. I think they've finally done it after 15+ years of waiting. I don't think I'll stop playing this for the next 4 months or so.

What difficulty would you recommend for someone who never played the original and usually stays away from this type of game?

Normal. They ease you in pretty gently on that level. Even if you don't do the tutorial, you should be able to figure things out in the early missions enough to survive the later onslaught. Haven't tried easy but I imagine it is very easy.

I picked up Dishonored Friday, and while I'm still not even done with the first real "mission" yet, I can confidently say that this is GOTY so far. It's basically Bioshock crossed with Metal Gear Solid.

Holy ####...Dishonored looks incredible. Other than FIFA 13, I haven't bought a game in awhile, but I think I'm going to pick this up. Thanks for the heads up Mobbin, I thought it was another Skyrim-esque RPG, so I was gonna pass on it, but some of my YT follows are doing walkthroughs of it so I checked it out. Looks like a somewhat Bioshock clone....right up my alley.

Heh, I made my post below without even seeing your post. Awesome. I've gotta pick this up ASAP.

I just sold a bunch of games and am picking up dishonered( lol smart type turned it into sushi weed) and xcom today. I have also heard many BioShock meets Assassin Creed references for Dishonored. I love the fact you can out do a complete stealth play through.

My son already traded his Borderlands 2 for Dishonered this weekend. Despite a fairly busy weekend, he already finished it. So I don't think it's to long.

This Dishonored game is looking like a GOTY type deal. Too bad I just picked up XCOM (which I love, btw). Looks like Dishonored will be put on the ole' xmas list. I'm looking forward to all the comments in here about it. :thumbup:ETA: or not GOTY material. Metacritic ranks it the same as XCOM. And it's supposedly a very short play.

This game, while having some genuinely interesting points, kind of disappointed me. It just didn't live up to it's potential. First, the good stuff. This game has a pretty interesting steampunk setting, the gameplay concept itself is really interesting and decently executed, and the way they've given you the ability to finish the game without killing a single person (if you so choose) is genuinely interesting. Unfortunately, on the Xbox 360 version at least, the graphics are pretty shoddy (probably due to the poor/non-existent anti-aliasing), and it's very distracting when the scenery has clipping artifacts when you look side to side. In addition to the poor graphics, this game is really short. I've done a few playthroughs, and it ranges from a low of 5ish hours for a "killing whatever and ignoring the optional objectives on easy" run to around 20ish hours for me to run the entire game on the hardest difficulty, finish all of the optional objectives, and collect all of the runes and bone charms. On top of all of this, the storyline really is just not very compelling. The game feels like way more thought went into the setting and lore than went into the actual events and dialogue that you're playing through. In summary, Dishonored is a game that has an interesting setting and some really neat gameplay options, but it's let down by graphical problems, story length, and some poor writing. In my honest opinion, if they would have made this game an open-world RPG, thrown more content into it, and given you a few more options as far as abilities and customization goes, this game could have been great. Such as shame, really.

OMG, the new SimCity looks amazing!

Yeah, looks really cool. I like how they've streamlined some of the infrastructure stuff that made the previous couple of games a little tedious at times (water, garbage, mass transit, etc). Just have to hope its still complex enough to be rewarding.

Just a couple of comments on this:1) This reviewer is right that the graphics are nothing special. This is Unreal, and it's showing it's age. The art design is stellar (depending one one's taste), but the actual graphics are Bioshock quality, which sounds good but hasn't aged quite so well.2) This game is plenty long if you're exploring, experimenting, and playing the game the way it was meant to be played. I've beaten MGS4 in under 5 hours and RE4 in 3 and change, but speedruns aren't good indicators for "real" game length. Without looking at my stats, I'd guess it took me 6+ hours to kill the first Overseer, which was the first real mission in the game. Granted, there's lots of messing around in there, but running through the game killing everything that moves is a horrible approach to this one, and you're just ruining it for yourself if you go that route.3) The abilities in this game are perfect. No fireballs or lightning that you get to throw out of your free hand. Instead its things like teleport, possession, and stopping time that reward strategic gameplay. 4) When I say that this is GOTY so far, keep in ming that it's been a pretty light year for games. In 2011, we had Dark Souls, Uncharted 3, Skyrim, and Batman all come out about the same time, plus Portal 2 and inFamous 2. This year we've had ME3 and . . . ? A good new IP like Dishonored should easily win out vs. ME3. I'm open to changing my mind on that one when we see some later releases like AC3.

The length is disappointing. That's comparable to the COD single player campaign. I think that probably pushes it down from a "buy immediately" to "buy used in a few months" for me.

In fairness, if someobody wanted to put this off until January, you'll be able to get if for $30 then. There's never any shame in putting off SP games for later on. I did that for Batman and U3 and it worked out great.

OK, who here has played Ghost Recon 2:Advanced Warfighter? The wife approved this one for playing with my boys, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to play the co-op campaign. I got it used/second hand, so I don't have the manual. I can't find the manual online, nor can I find anything online to tell me how to play the campaign co-op. Anyone play this co-op and can give me some instructions?

The game is short, but so is BioShock, Mass Effect, and Fallout 3. It all depends on how you play the game and if you power through everything or like to enjoy the ride. I'll take a awesome short game over the a long overdone cookie cutter campaign any day.

I did a quick search ad found this, "Co-op missions are different from the SP missions. You have to go to multiplayer, then just host a private game and invite your friend. Then change the game made to Campaign co-op." HTH.

ME was a solid 40+ hours with a very high replayability factor, and fallout probably had 100+ hours of content. Those games definitely were not short in the way it sounds like this one is.

I can beat both the games on easy in short periods of time. Mass Effect takes 3.5 hours if I want it to, but I enjoy playing it on hard ad doing full gameplays. I was responding to his son beating it already. What we don't know is did he play it on easy or hard, did he do a stealth run or just hack and slash. The review say it is about 5-10 hours for the easy/hack&slash playthroughs and longer on harder difficulties with other tactics. I'm just pointing out people play different ways that have dramatically different run times.

When you say that Fallout 3 is short, I assume you mean if you follow the main quests only and never deviate from that. Because I've spent more than 100 hours in it before coming close to finishing the main game with all of the other stuff to do.

The other review posted suggested its about 20 hours even if you are a completionist. Understand your point but those RPGs aren't good comps.

His first playthrough, he said he rarely killed anyone. He was playing a stealth character. So he didn't play it as a hack and slash. That's about all I can tell you for sure.

Hmm, I couldn't find multiplayer anywhere in the menus. The back of the box lists co-op as an option on one system, but those instructions seems to be geared towards co-op through Live.

Follow up on Dishonored.

After playing considerably more this weekend. I stand by my previous review. Its a fun game and I have done all the side quests but its not that long. I am starting what I believe is the final mission and I may have 25-30 hours total into this game.

I also still haven't connected with my character or felt like I have to do one more quest. Maybe its the story, I dunno, but something is missing in that regard.

I will probably play through this 2 more times once without killing anyone and once while killing everyone. Other than that I dont see alot of replayability since there are only a few side quests which open up as the main story evolves.

My opinion is this isnt a $60 buy now its wait until its $40.

I've been waiting for a good new game to buy while trading in all of my Mass Effects and a few others. We think Dishonored may be honorable enough to put commander shepherd to rest?

Have you played much of the ME3 multiplayer? They just added a ton more content. It's been one of my favorite multiplayers ever.

I haven't bought a game for my PS3 since Force Unleashed 2. But I saw Dishonored and it looks great. This thread only confirms that.

For those who have it do you recommend PS3 or PC?
