Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (2 Viewers)

Quick question. MY first venture back into sports in like 6 or 7 years. My first baseball game since MVP 2005. Is it worth getting the show 13 for $60 or is the show 12 deep enough to start off with? Reason I ask is because Target has like 30 copies at $15 each for the show 12.

Any good PC games come out lately that are like Civ, Rome or AoE?
Company of Heroes 2 is coming out later this year. June, I believe. Sega is now going to be publishing the title now that THQ has fallen into the nothing.

To me, it doesn't matter what the update is - it's the fact that it always needs an update for whatever I am trying to do.

This wouldn't be so bad if it just updated quickly right from the screen I'm at (like xbox does). No, Sony says I can't do what I want to do, and makes me manually back out and make it update (where do you go to update it again??) Then I have to accept the EULA, download (slowly), then install (again, slowly). It's really annoying, especially compared w/ XBL (which is quick and intuitive).
That's not right. I'd contact customer support.
They really can't help me for what annoys me - I don't care about the update, or even if it's a little slow. But the last thing I want to do is back out of where I am and have to go hunt for the update setting (I always forget where it is, as I don't use the PS3 much). Updates are a fact of gaming - but do it right from the screen I'm in, don't make me accept an EULA for the millionth time, etc. The whole PS3 interface is just bad.
Something is not right here. The only time you need to find the update menu is for a system update. There has been exactly 1 system update since last September 12th. That is 1 time in 6 months.

For any game update you never have to hunt around the menus, it is one click of X that simply tells the game, "go ahead and update". The game updates typically take less than two minutes. I just did one the other day for Lego Lord of the Rings. it could not have been any easier.

I concur with everyone else, your system must be screwed because what you are explaining makes no real sense.

Then maybe it just seems that way every time I use it (which, in all fairness, is probably once every few months - I really only bought the thing for the bluray). But it seems every time it needs to update (or I try to get into the store and it won't let me without updating) you have to manually do it. It's frustrating. You need to update, fine - just do it.

Bought it anyway. $15 is pretty cheap.

You a fan of the Total War series? Medieval II is pretty cheap on Steam. I've been playing Empire and it's pretty fun as well.
I actually really like the firing lines in Empire. I know that was debated at the time of original release.I hear the Shogun 2 expansion is a good mix of hand-to-hand and projectile tactics. There's a ton of stuff I want to play right now, but I just don't have the time. I saw a re-release of Baldur's Gate with some new characters, quests, and revamped graphics. Looks like fun. It's been so long I imagine it would feel like a totally new game.

Since you're just getting back into the swing of things ( ) I think this was the best move.

I was kind of in the same boat - wanted a baseball game, haven't had one since Sega Genesis days... after reading reviews, I went with The Show 13 because of its beginner mode. I've played demos of baseball games over the past few years, and I don't like how complicated they have become. I just want to pick up and play, not practice and practice so I can line up the cursor to hit. Not regretting the purchase so far.

I agree. Baseball games don't need to be anymore complicated then RBI/Baseball stars. I wish they would make a super detailed/enhanced version of baseball stars. Hmmmm.....

Im more about the simulation. Playing the game is almost secondary to me. I like running a franchise.

Do I just run Wings of Liberty and download Heart of Swarm or buy HoS online and do it separately? Because WoL is basically freezing up on my PC right now at the optimizing/updating screens.

Finished the new Tomb Raider 100% complete. I stick by my assessment that it's nothing short of spectacular. The multiplayer wasn't anything to write home about, but it didn't have to be. I definitely recommend it for anyone wanting to play a new action/adventure game. It's available on Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC.

The optimization/update screen IS the Heart of the Swarm download. Apparently all users download it whether they upgrade or not. I played the first couple missions of single player and enjoyed it. Unfortunately they must have included some "optimizations" the demanded more from the hardware, so it's not running as smoothly as wings of liberty did.

Anybody play the new God of War yet? I have to temper my expectations compared to the other titles, but the reviews look pretty good.

Just finished Tomb Raider.

For any Uncharted or Tomb Raider fans, this is a must play. I was looking forward to this coming out, but it was much better than i expected. Outstanding game.

Just got home from a week overseas and it arrived. 6 year old and I are debating opening it up vs continuing with ME2 ...leaning towards me

Baseball stars best baseball game ever.

My brother brought by his ps3 - ill be borrowing for a bit. What are some ps3 exclusives that are must plays that I can get on the cheap?
Uncharted series. UC1 is pretty good if very linear. UC2 has been very good so far for me. Probably the best exclusive series on the system.
Just finished uc1. Very solid game, although it had way too much combat for how poor the combat mechanics were. Definitely looking forward to starting UC2 which appears to have received more acclaim.

There was no marketing for The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct during this week's The Walking Dead, less than 2 days prior to launch. Activision clearly has no confidence in this game. I may grab it via rental and let you all know how bad it is. Stay tuned.

Second one is not as good as the first but still pretty good. The first one is just so unique the first time you play it. You are just mesmerized by Rapture and everything going on in it.

Bioshock:Infinite one minute TV commercial.

I can't believe the colors and rendering in that game. Amazing.

That's my one criticism of Tomb Raider. It's kind of dark and gray.
I am just about done with the first one. It is truly a beautiful game. But I don't think it's going to make my personal top 5. Certainly top ten though for game play. And as far as pure look certainly top 5 but I think Skyrim is number one in that category for me.I am looking forward to hearing about this one once it comes out. If you guys rate it well I'll be in.

Sitting in front of me, getting ready to be played. I still haven't seen a review. So I don't know what I'm getting into here. If I go missing, that means I have likely been bitten and turned. Do what you can to save yourselves.

XBox. I only rented this. The controls are a little stiff and the sensitivity is off. I can't find a good sweet spot for it. So, I'd bet it would probably play a little better on PC.

My father-in-law needed a new computer apparently and bought some crazy decked out gaming rig to browse email and do some word processing :wall: .

I haven't played a single-player (non-COD or non-sports) game on this generation of consoles. Last one was Metal Gear Solid 2. So last week on a whim I downloaded Far Cry 3 and I'm pretty much loving it. Like a lot. Realizing that I may have been missing out. What other games would you guys recommend that might be similar? Feel free to go back a few years, like I said I haven't played any of these single-player games in forever.

Portal 1 and Portal 2.Borderlands.

I just got an NES emulator for my Nexus 10 so that I can play the 8-bit Nintendo version of Tetris, the best version of the best videogame ever.

In before Bioshock

What specifically about Far Cry 3 do you like? Is it mainly the shooting? Or is it exploring the open world and doing little missions? Other good shooting games would be Bioshock (already mentioned), all of the Uncharteds (if you're on the PS3), and Dead Space. Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3) is a good choice too, though I wouldn't consider it a shooter. If you like exploring and doing random stuff, then you should just buy Skyrim and come back to us 120 hours from now. Other good single-player games to look at would be both Batmans, Red Dead Redemption, the Mass Effect franchise, and maybe Grand Theft Auto 4. I'm sure I'm leaving some out.

I got some pretty good freebies recently. Spec Ops The Line was free on PS+ earlier this month, and I highly recommend that one. I was barely even aware that that game existed, but it definitely fell into the category of "overlooked gem." Basically it plays like Uncharted only with Marines Delta Force instead of Drake, and with enemies who aren't bullet-sponges. The guy who voices Drake also voices the main character in this one. It's short, but it was good for three playthroughs. The highest difficulty level was seriously hard, with probably 8-10 areas that were as hard as the hardest areas in Uncharted 1 on Crushing.

Sony was also kind enough to give me a free $10 in my PSN account, which I spent on Motorstorm RC. It took a while to get the controls down (it's basically a top-down racing game), but it's fun and there's a lot of content there for a $5 PSN game.

Amazon doesn't seem to have any special deals on Bioshock Infinite, so I'll hold off on that one for a while until the price comes down. Good luck to all of those are looking forward to this next week -- I'm looking forward to seeing user reviews.

How is the game?
At first, I thought the game was much better than I anticipated. And it still is, for the most part. But honestly, it's a bit boring. I want to at least get to the part where Daryl gets the crossbow and see if it gets better from there. But it's a chore to play through. I hear the game is short, so I may be able to finish it in a couple of days. But that depends on whether I have interest in doing so. Without the crossbow, I feel that it's just a bad stealth game right now, and the game definitely punishes you for using guns (which, if you're familiar with The Walking Dead, should make sense). There's a mini-game that the game puts you through when a walker gets right on top of you. It's similar to the aiming game that takes place during the shooting sections of TellTale's The Walking Dead game. But it's poorly handled. For people who complained about aiming in TellTale's game, they won't like that any better. And imagine doing that mini-game several times in a row if you're surrounded, basically until you are dead. Don't get surrounded. You can usually handle two at a time, but any more and you're lucky to make it out alive.

The neat thing with the game is that there are some random events that happen. Between missions, you select the route to take with your car. It gives you the destination and gives you the choice to take a rural road, main road or highway. Highways will take less gas, but you have a higher chance of breakdown. Rural routes allow for more exploration and finding supplies, but eat more gas. Main roads are in the middle. And after selecting your route, the game goes into, what I think reminds me of a Oregon Trail type of randomness. Like I said, sometimes you'll break down and need a part, sometimes you stop for supplies, sometimes the road is blocked and you need to push cars out of the way (or find another route). And the game isn't pre-determined with it. I turned off the game after stopping and needing a new battery only to find that the car didn't break down at all when I started from there the next time.

I'm only a few hours in, but that's what I can say so far. There are some nice surprising moments where the game feels like it could've been something better, but for me, I'm just playing for a pre-TV show story on the Dixon Bros. Unfortunately, so far there hasn't been much of that. It's fetch this, do this, here's a survivor and they need this... etc.

I'll give it a little more time. Maybe it'll get better.

 I don't mind some of those aspects of a game. They may seem tedious, but I guess if you think about it, gathering supplies/helping others/etc...is what would happen in a zombie apocalypse. I wouldn't want a straight fps in this genre (other than L4d of course).

Thank you for the review. Please post a final update after you play more.
