Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (9 Viewers)

PC's are best for FPS's. Nothing beats using a mouse to aim.Consoles are better for sports games.Skyrim, while I guess could be considered a fps, is fine on a console though. Not much shooting unless you're an archer, and even then it's not bad.
Yeah no problem with Skyrim. Just the pure shooters. Especially when you need to be able to move and shoot large groups of enemies. I can strafe with the best of them on a PC just can't get there with a console.

I've gotten to the point where I prefer a controller for FPS game. It just gets you more "into" the game.

I spend all day at work on a PC. When I'm home, if I'm gonna game, I'd just much prefer to be on a couch; graphics and controller be damned.

This, too. While all you PC guys are hunched over a computer desk, sitting in some crappy office chair, I am sitting in my comfy recliner, feet up, on a huge screen and killer sound system.

Never meant for this to turn into a PC vs Console debate. I simply made a comment that the generalization that PC games have to be played at a desk should have disappeared long ago. Even though the idea of "Big Picture" mode is new, I've played PC games on my TV since Medal of Honor: Allied Assault released (2002).

Just a personal note. My family does tend to take up the living room TV nearly 100% of the time. It's part of the reason I've barely finished any Wii games. I've since moved the XBox in the office with the PC and I play on the same monitor/TV that I play my PC games on. I've always had a surround sound system for my PC, have good headphones, and a nice captain's computer chair. I guess what I'm saying is, don't have kids. They want the TV all the time. :P

I don't think anyone would argue that point. It just isn't viable for everyone.

It may not be viable now, but within the next few years, it'll be more and more a normality.

I noticed that XCOM has gotten a lot of praise in this thread, and I managed to catch it at Amazon for $30 after shipping. Looking forward to this one when it arrives.

What platform? I finally gave up waiting for the PS3 patch that never seems to come. Traded it along with Kingdoms of Amalur for a copy of the new Tomb Raider.Speaking of Tomb Raider, what's with all this shake the left stick stuff? Oof. Hope that goes away now that I made it through the intro chapter.

I like consoles for action games like shooters and sports. Consoles for strategy games. Though I've plenty of action games on the PC.

For those that aren't completely tired of the zombie games I think "Deadlight" at Steam for $3.74 is a pretty great deal right now.

I always swear I'm going to lay off the spring deals with summer right around the corner but I'll probably end up pulling the trigger on Empire: Total War(maybe even the "Collection" for twice the price @$7.49). I'm a sucker for Steam. Any game developer that thinks the industry is losing $ because of Steam is insane. I went for ~5 years without buying a single PC game before Steam came along, now I buy something almost once a week. At those prices you can afford to hit-and-miss. It's kind of like Amazon and mp3's.

Does anyone know where you can download "Rise of Nations"? I tried going to the Microsoft page but it's a dead link(Oh Microsoft). Is it freeware now? I wouldn't mind paying if it was a reasonable price and I assumed it would be since it's been out for a decade. I used to have a disc somewhere but I don't want to play it off a DVD(CD?).

Re: Tomb Raider. The QTE (Quick-Time Events) won't go away, but I don't think that there was much moving the stick back and forth. Maybe 3-4 times the whole game.

Deadlight was ok. I was disappointed when I played it, as it was hyped up a little for me. It wasn't a bad game, though. For under $4, it's probably a decent deal.

Bought the stepson 2 for 1 at Target today for his birthday:SkyrimMass Effect 3Batman Arkham CityReally hope he likes them.
If he doesn't, take his console away. That's a great list.
Seriously, that's a sweet gift! I have all of those on my waiting to buy list, i'm just cheap and am trying to wait until they are $19.99 or less.
Thanks. He's really playing the snot out of them.Batman is friggin' gorgeous. What graphics!

Arkham Asylum was even better of a game IMO.

Beat Vanquish a couple days ago. Great game with an 84 score on Metacritic. The only real knocks on it are that it's fairly short and there isn't any real evolution in your character's abilities throughout the course of the game. Of course, the game will blow your face off in the meantime while you beat it.If you're a fan of action/shooting games, I'd highly recommend it. Platinum Games are the same guys who made Bayonetta, and are working on Metal Gear Rising. Far and away the best developer going in the action genre imo.
:goodposting:I am kinda disappointed there will not be a sequel or some sort of expansion.

Good, then that puts me at least half way through them because I had two already. My land hand is useless, it's there for weight and balance only. I have to switch hands so I can use my right every time I hit one of these things. Quick time I can handle. Shake the left stick, not so much. Apparently it is my gaming achilles heel.

Broke down and bought the original Bioshock after reading this thread. Been loving it so far, but am having zero luck getting past this first Big Daddy. I can zap it but as soon as I open fire it just kicks my ###. I've managed to dodge a few of the bull rushes but can't open enough distance to repeat the process. Wearing me out.

stick with it. If memory serves the first one is actually one of the harder ones in the game.

Definitely one of the hardest basically because you have very little plasmids and weapons.

Finished episode 2 & 3 this weekend in The Walking Dead

Definitely need to play through the game again making different choices but these were top notch games. More games need to come out like this. Would not mind seeing a Zelda or Mario or Final Fantasy game encompass this method. Pretty darn fun stuff.

I had to step away from Bioshock. It just kind of lost me. Well I should say lost the excitement. It started to feel like work so I put it down. I'll go back to it at some point but I know if I kept going I would just ruin it for myself. I am really spoiled now by the huge worlds I have been playing and Bioshock was feeling cramped a bit. So I dove back into Skyrim and started a new character. Going to play a little darker this time. Even going to do the Dark Brotherhood quest. I wiped them out in Oblivion and Skyrim last time I played. Really loving my return to Skyrim.

After beating ACIII, I popped in Skyrim for the first time in a while last night.Took me 30 min. to get back into the swing of things. haha

Yeah it didn't take long for me to get back in. I did start a new character this time. And unlike last time even though I haven't been to see the Graybeards I already have a shout to use. Unrelenting force comes in handy at level 8. I am going to get another level or two and then go shout hunting before I go to see them or go to the College. Just all in all much smoother this time around.

Finished Tomb Raider last night. Highly, highly recommended.

It really is Tomb Raider: Uncharted. But that's a good thing. You'll wish you had a projector to play it on.

Some of the objects I just can't figure out how to get to but I'm not sure I'll bother to go back and find.

If you're an adept platform gamer, I'd suggest playing it on maximum difficulty. I played it on "Normal" and it felt lightweight even to me.

The only reason this game isn't better than Uncharted 2 is because that game had better coloring. Tomb Raider has a lot of grays and browns whereas U2 was brigher. But the gameplay in TR is top notch.

Are we talking a ton of jumping from one ledge to another kind of thing? I have an almost irrational hatred for games where jumping is the major mode of getting from here to there.

It's a little different than that. Scaling cliff faces with a pick axe, shooting a rope with a bow from one ledge to another then climbing/dropping on said rope. More diverse than just jumping from ledge to ledge.

OK. That sounds reasonable. I just hate the stupid jump, strafe, crouch at the same time kind of crap.

Are objects the equivalent of treasure in Uncharted?
I forget how it worked in Uncharted but I think so. You're supposed to find things like diaries, GPS caches, and relics. It's not critical to the story but it does enhance it. Each discovery gives you more XP's.The good thing is that the game world is broken down by sections that you can travel between using base camps (I think that's how they did it in Red Dead Redemption, right?) and the game allows you to go back and do all that scavenging type stuff after you've completed the main storyline.

That's my problem. No money left, only two Eve hypos, two electro-bucks or whatever, must have blown up all the gas cylinders - don't see any, turret is dead. I'm basically going mano-a-roboto with a pistol full of AP rounds. Had to give up the fire hands plasmid to get telekinesis, so I can't set it on fire. Can't even visit that one section of the lab with the ice in front of it.Think I'm going to have to go back to an old save and try again, which is frustrating.

That first one I was basically out of everything by the time I finally killed it with the wrench. I think I got sent back to the chamber like a dozen times but I finally took him out.

the damage you do to the Big Daddies carries over every time you reload from a Vita Chamber. So itll be a war of attrition until you eventually defeat it.

Treasures in Uncharted were basically just gee whiz. They didn't add anything to the story. It was just sort of a "see how many you can find" sort of thing. There were probably trophies or achievements or whatever associated with them but, as I couldn't care less about that stuff, I don't pay attention to them so can't be sure. But you could have gone without ever picking up a trophy and it wouldn't have mattered one bit as far as the story went. So it sounds as if Objects have a bit more substance to them then treasures did. As for RDR, never played it, so not sure.

I'm surprised how much work the actress that plays Lara Croft, Camilla Luddington, has already done. Of course, I don't watch much TV.

If you do a certain number of accomplishments in the game, you get a collection of videos that you can watch from the main menu that shows interviews of her, some of the developers, and the music composer. I thought it was interesting.

Try to find a Gene Bank and switch back to your Fire Plasmid. They are usually near the Gatherer's Garden's (the machines with the Little Sisters on them where you can buy Plasmids.) Going up against any Big Daddy with only Telekinesis would be pretty tough, especially early on in the game when you haven't got the research camera or any of the more powerful weapons.

Yes. Unless you're trying to get the achievement for never dying, you can beat a big daddy using only the wrench. Btw- to get the no vita chamber achievement - you MUST have the vita chambers turned off in the options. There is also a glitch or predisposed event you have to trigger to get the option to even appear in the first place. Somebody else might remember better then I.

It can be a grind with the constant searching for loot and hacking minigames (it was the biggest complaint about the first game, they totally retooled hacking for the 2nd game), but it is worth it to finish it. Amazing storyline, especially around the 3/4 point. One tip that should streamline the process is that you don't always have to constantly hack or search everything if you don't want to although it may make some of the fights a little tougher. It's a game that gets easier as you go though as your character gets more and more powerful but the enemies don't really scale up as much. Can't do much about the linear feel though. While there is some element of searching around on each individual level/area you mostly have to go in a set order. Comparing it to Skyrim isn't really fair though, Bioshock 1 is almost a 6 year old game after all.

so do they not make regular ds games anymore?

we got my daughter a ds xl about ayear or so ago but all new games appear to be 3ds only..

Pretty jazzed for Bioshock Infinity. Loved the first 2 games, the first is in my top 5 of all time. Just thinking about it makes me want to rebuy 1 and play again.

For the first big daddy, it's possible to jump onto the sign for the medical pavilion -- it's in an early area right when you enter with a vending machine and receptionist desk below a flight of stairs, with the sign right above the desk (I hope I'm describing it right). If you're perced on the sign, and it might take a few tries to get there, the big daddy can't touch you but you can shoot him with impunity. It took quite a while to wear him down that way because he kept wandering off, but that was the cheap-### way that I beat him on max difficulty.

Yeah I know it's older. But I think really in most ways it still holds up well. Even with me losing it here a bit near the end, and I am close, I would still say it should be a top 10 game on most lists. But it was just getting repetitive feeling and I needed a break before I went from slightly bored to disliking it.

Even thought it's a top 5 favorite game for me, I have to admit that it runs out of gas a bit toward the end. Still, you've got to finish it.

I will go back and finish. I have this happen with some games and I have learned to take a break and then hit it again. If I don't and I just push through it's very workmanlike and there is no fun in that. It's like checking a box instead of enjoying the game if that makes sense.

I'm looking forward to the FBG reviews of Bioshock.

Never played the first two, but I've heard they're like an art deco version of Oblivion.

It's really nothing like Oblivion (other than both have the first-person POV). Oblivion is a big, open-world role-playing game. Bioshock is a linear shooter. Both are great, but different genres.
