Payday 2 Mini Review:
It's a very fun game that excels with coop play and can be frustrating going solo. Its gameplay is status quo fps style and does well besides some hit detection clipping.
The weapons, modifications, skills, and masks are bought off of a money system that you gain while pulling heists. About 90% goes into your offshore account and will never been seen when the other 10% is spending money. This is because the currency system would brake down if you had 1.2 billion just chilling. They did a good job on restricting how much money you get so you need to plan out if you want to slap a sight on your weapon, use your latest skill point(which also takes money to unlock), or buy a new weapon.
The cost of skills and weapons rise as they get better and better. Each skill has a "owned" and "aced" status where it takes 1 point to own and 3 more(4total) to ace and 4K-120K at the low end of the skill tree. In the high end the money escalates into the 700K+ range and can be a huge dent to the wallet as well as 4 points to own and 8 more to ace. There are a total of 120 skill points and a 100 character levels. There are 4 distinct character types.
The four different types are quite unique and you tell they put a lot of thought into them because a proper team has a nice balance between the bunch and have certain skills that compliment each other that one person can't have all of, especially if you are trying to stealth everything. There is the Mastermind who helps greatly with crowd control, the Enforcer who can basically be a ####### tank, the Technichan who uses explosives/turrets and breaks into everything faster/more sneaky, and the Ghost that is primed for stealth. Within each character type the skills, especially the high end ones, offer bonuses to the whole team if they are aced.
The gameplay itself has a very left 4 dead feel to it and is great fun when playing with people who have mics. I have mostly played with Dainty and it was alright but we had trouble on so missions due to having to haul 6-8 bags of money/gold/coke and you can only hold one at a time. So with more people who can more everything much faster. This helps a ton because the enemy progression is time based for each level. The overall AI is decent. The team AI of your partners work enough to where they will kill lots of guys, take a ton of damage, and priority #1 is to revive you.
The game experience will be better with more people and we have had some great times so far with randoms. The Xbox 360 matchmaking works well and you choose a mission to start or one someone already made. Each level has three difficulties where the payout is increased but also the difficulty of enemies is upped. Right now they launched with less then the 17 missions they promised but the rest that are being debugged and will be coming out as a free update, not dlc. You do play missons over and ove again, which can be seen as repetitive, but the layout changes slightly and eapecially in the long missions(2-3 days) its very much like left 4 dead campaigns.
Overall Payday 2 has been a fun game that is hard to find on Xbox 360, but will be coming to games on demand on Friday the 23rd. I'm sur ei have missed talking about a ton of stuff.
Edit: forgot to mention that the stealth elements take a while to get properly geared towards. You will need a silencer and certain skills(dominator in mastermind and the body bag skill in ghost) to be successfully.
