Played Dead Space and now working through Dead Space 2. The first one had some fairly limited game play mechanics, which are significantly improved in DS2, but it really nailed the creepy ambiance. It will make you jump for sure.

Fun games with a very good story and highly creepy, definitely recommend.

Getting ready to start a play session for the month leading up to Halloween playing "horror" games. I have Dead Space 1 and 2 in my playlist along with Resident Evil 4 and Amnesia: The Dark Descent. I own all of these and either have only played through some of the game or haven't started them. Now's a good time. Aiming to be done by the release of Battlefield 4/Batman Arkham Origins.

Play Dead Space 1 at night with the lights off and the sound up. A 5.1 speaker set up would be nice too.

ETA: My comment about some of the limited game play mechanics for Dead Space apply to the PC version. The port from the console could have been better, they got it right for DS2 on the PC though.

So I played'm part of the Diablo 3 demo tonight. That game is sick. I'll hold off for the PS4 version but there is no way I'm not getting this.

After reading through a good bit of the guide, I have a feeling this game could break my record for most hours spent on a console game.I can't wait to get it.

Diablo 3 was a huge let down. You'll beat it in a weekend and have zero interest in playing the same content at harder levels.

I've heard it is pretty much just a button masher. That correct in your estimation?

Action rpg's at their heart are button mashers but your ability to get to end game(not end of easiest level, true end game) depends on build of your character and gear.

Girlfriend and I are both lovig Diablo 3. From what i have seen frm my roomamtes game the interface looks amazing compared to the PC version. I am/was a huge Diablo 2 fan and love it. My girlfriend never heard of the game until I told her to try it and now we don't want to stop playing every night. The hard difficulties may become annoying to her but I always love a good challenge and use of strategy instead of playing god mode.

Did you get any of the pre order goodies? I am getting something called an infernal helm but have not read how useful it is. Cool to hear that you guys are enjoying the co-op. Once you start the co-op do you have to stay in co-op mode or can you take your character back to an individual game?

We are playing on two seperate screens with two copies because we played for a few hours and then she went out and picked up her own copy for the big screen. The infernal is a low level legendary item that has very low stats(good for very early game) but has +25% experience which could help depending on if you try and level up at times. When you play in co-op the characters can be taken into their own games. But FYI this is when we both have our own accounts and had the characters tied to them, not playing all off the same account, so I'm not sure about that.

My wife and I have separate characters but only one PSN account and we can play co-op or by ourselves. I'm not sure if she can go online solo with hers though, since the PSN account is tied to my sign in on the console. I'll have to give that a try.

In the challenge menu there appear to be hundreds of individual challenges. Many of them give you a reward of "10 Shield" where shield is an icon of a shield.

What do these rewards do? Is that "10 shield" adding to a defensive stat?

I am on a PS 3 so some of the challenges relate to trophies. Could the "10 shield" have something to do with "achievement points" for Xbox? I see that "achievement points" term used online in regards to the challenges but I don't know if it relates to xbox or something within the game specfically.

For example this link refers to them as "achievements" but they don't appear to be Xbox style achievements. They appear to be seperate things that provide cosmetic awards.

Dead Space 2 was great. It's clearly more "action-y" than DS1, but it's still recognizably a horror game first and foremost.

Also, "hardcore" mode in this game is awesome. For those that haven't played it, the difficulty level is a slight notch below Zealot (or whatever the super-hard difficulty is), but all checkpoints are turned off and you can only save your game three times, period. Getting killed potentially costs you several hours of gameplay. The level of sheer tension is off the charts when playing this way even though by this time you're presumably very familiar with every room and every encounter. This was a brilliant mode to include that kept the game tied to its survival horror roots.

It does sometimes but they are listed as GS instead of the shield thingy that we don't understand.

I've got $270 in Amazon credits and coincidentally there is a 500GB PS3 bundle with GTA V for $270. I played a lot in my 20s but I wouldn't call myself a huge gamer. I pretty much only played my PS2 for GTA, some Madden, some racing and a few rentals here and there. I have a 1 year old son so I would probably wait until 5th gen stuff comes out before I make a big investment I imagine, but that's another conversation. How long will games be made for PS3 if I go this route? Could I get 5 years out of a PS3? Would it be beneficial for me to wait for a 4?

Well my wife wants a Wii or something where she can get more involved and doesn't want to be just sitting and holding a controller. She's a fan of the Wii Sports games and the like. How is the PS3 Move? Are the games fun (for a female and very young kid)?

I would think that between the catalog of great games available on the PS3 and the development of new games for the next year or two that you should be able to keep yourself busy for the next 5 years with a PS3.

Yeah I'm really enjoying it, I read several reviews that compared the difference between DS1 & DS2 to the difference between Alien and Aliens and I think that is spot on. However DS2 still offers plenty of tension, I particularly enjoyed returning to the Ishimura, my internal tension meter went to 11 during that chapter.

These games are right up there with Bioshock and Mass Effect for me. Terrific story combined with top notch atmosphere and incredibly well considered and executed game play.

I am not big on ramping games up to ridiculous difficulty levels. Just give me a great story and the normal game play and I'm fine. I don't mind tougher opponents but I have no interest in having to redo 2-3 hours of gameplay because someone thought it would be funny to remove checkpoints.

That's fair. I'll concede that the "super high difficulty" thing appeals to a fairly narrow audience, and I don't begrudge anybody for skipping over it. I just like the fact that developers continue to include that option for those of us who like to replay games.

PS Move is fantastic. I had a Wii (and sold it quickly) so I can compare the two.

The Move gives you the PS3 superior graphics and games. The Wii gives you a better library of little kid games like Mario. The controller functions are about the same.

I enjoyed Dishonored and Crysis too but their stories were more limited IMO, and The Witcher became increasingly entertaining as it went on although the story was pretty much an adolescent sex & violence fantasy.

It's pretty bad but there is a high res mod that's fixed the graphics and as long as you have a controller it's fine.

Witcher 2 is the right answer if you're into story driven stuff though. Especially with the new combat. Great game.

Yeah it's the only edition on PC. Definitely stick with controller. I think it would be difficult to impossible to succeed at it keyboard and mouse.

ETA There is a KB+M mod that apparently greatly improves the usability but I can't vouch for it either way. Game was definitely made with controller in mind.

Nobody plays Battlefield for single player. EA would do themselves a favor by not making one. That's how I think of the single player campaign.

I play Dark Souls on a budget gaming PC with the DSfix mod that fixes literally ALL of the problems with the port - game runs at 60 FPS everywhere but ####### blighttown.

Obviously you have to use a gamepad, I use a 360 controller - plays better on my PC than it ever did on my 360.

For reference, ATI Radeon HD 5770 and AMD Phenom quad 3.2ghz.

I'm a PC gamer and am not sure what to pick up next. I really enjoy story driven games like Mass Effect 1, 2 & 3, Bioshock 1 & 2 (the story in Infinite was kind of mediocre IMO), Deus Ex Human Revolution and Dead Space 1 & 2. What are some other games that have rich and detailed stories that immerse the player in the game universe?

I enjoyed Dishonored and Crysis too but their stories were more limited IMO, and The Witcher became increasingly entertaining as it went on although the story was pretty much an adolescent sex & violence fantasy.

Thanks to Steam sales I have the following games in my queue but I am open to others as well: The Witcher 2, Batman Arkham Asylum & Arkham City, Fallout 3 & New Vegas, Half Life 2, Alan Wake, Dragon Age Origins & Dragon Age II, Metro 2033, Assassins Creed II & Brotherhood & Revelations

Just wait for Battlefield 4. The Beta starts in like 2 weeks and the full game is out next month.

Isn't BF4 just a big MMO? Is there a single player or co-op campaign that they actually put some effort into or is it just an obvious tack on to the real meat and potatoes of the MMO?

Nobody plays Battlefield for single player. EA would do themselves a favor by not making one. That's how I think of the single player campaign.

This. 95% of the player base don't even play it. Don't know why they waste their time

I've heard that. I am not particularly interested in playing death matches and capture the flags with Korean teenagers.

Although I plan to delve into that realm when Titanfall comes out.

Half-Life 2 is one of my all-time favorite games. Not sure how it compares to the games listed though, since I've played none of those.

Hands down Half Life 2. Especially since you are story driven. Considered by many to be the best game of all time. Some good and cheap DLC for it as well.

After that Batman and AC 2 were great.

Yup. The Witcher 2 is a no brainer here if you liked the first.

I have heard great things about Half Life 2 it is the #1 game of all time on MetaCritic, which is the reason why I bought it even though it is a 2004 release. I played about an hour of it a couple months back and it certainly seemed like an interesting story but I agree with STEADYMOBBIN that the graphics do seem very dated at this point.

Not true. Steep learning curve but once you know what you're doing and what equipment to use its actually shockingly easy.
