Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (5 Viewers)

Just got a good deal on a ps3, and I'm curious if the intent is to continue with on line gaming on that platform.

Just wondering how much time I have left to go on CoD missions with my nephew or get involved in an online dance off with my niece with ps3 games.
At least a year if not 2.

Get ps+. Well worth it. Every month has 2 new recent release games for free.
Thanks to you and Usual for the info. I just didn't want to be the guy who buys a year subscription when the ps+ for ps3 was going to sunset in April.

So I went back to redo the suicide mission in ME2 but I don't have a save far enough back save to re-pick who goes into the vent shafts. I go to the select your squad screen but Mordin is already selected for that role so I think I'm stuck. Unless someone knows of a way to deselect at that point, he's a goner. I'm not starting the game over just for that - in a subsequent playthrough I will.

Yea just get it next time. I always stagger my saves to have one right there and one maybe an hour back for that reason.

Hey at least It'll be like brand new when you go through again.

Isn't there a restart mission option? Or is that only ME3? It's been awhile.

There is a restart option but it takes you to the point where the specialist and squad leader 2 have already been selected.

I'm currently playing Don't Starve because it was this month's PS4/PS+ freebie. Once you get into it, this game is shockingly addictive because there's always "one more thing" you can do before quitting for the night (or meeting your perma-death). However, I can definitely imagine the day when I die 40+ days into the game and never pick it up again because of not wanting to rebuild from scratch. I'm currently on my best run ever of 21 days, but winter is almost here and I don't expect to survive it for lack of supplies to build more rabbit traps.

Been playing Fallout 3 & Fallout New Vegas for the past couple weeks. While I do like how Bethesda handles the open world concept I sometimes find these games to really lack focus and the main story line seems to suffer as a consequence. NV did a better job of moving the story along and creating interesting factions to choose from. It also handles consequences of your characters actions better than 3.

Overall they are both fun games but they can really become a grind over time.

Agreed. It would be a major step forward if Bethesda could implement a compelling major storyline that integrates with the open world nature of their games. New Vegas made some progress on this front, as did Skyrim with the civil war plot line, but there is a lot of room for improvement.

Skyrim is awesome on so many levels but that world is sooooooo vast. I put in 200 hours on it and still haven't moved the main quest past learning about dragon shouts. Haven't even touched the Fighter's Guild quest either.

I think there is such a thing as too big for video games. I think about 40 hours is just about right for an excellent story line with solid side quests, after that it starts to turn into a grind ("Oh joy, another Dwarven dungeon crawl").

And what's the deal with not being able to fast travel from within structures? I will cheer the day that Bethesda's programmers figure out how to fix that issue.

I made the mistake of pushing through the main quest line. A lot of the quests go away as they're over come by events.

I didn't like the game when I first picked up but after I gave it some time, very solid game.

I always thought they did this on purpose. So you can't sneak deep into a dungeon just to grab the loot, shout, books, etc and then *poof* fast travel out.

Haven't really looked at DayZ before, but watched a stream from PCGamer today for a bit and was intrigued.

back to playing Skyrim. There is something innately satisfying in shooting sorcers dead from the shadows.
I find it very satisfying to snipe anyone while being undetected.
It's fun, no doubt, but the sneak'n'snipe dynamic becomes game breaking pretty quickly turning the game into a whole bunch of rinse'n'repeat.
There's a mod you can get that makes sneaking much more realistic.

I loved Skyrim but my one complaint was that I didn't know I beat the game until 6 days later! I still had some tasks that would always repeat. I wished they just had credits rolling!

Wizards of the Coast sale at GamersGate - great sale on Enhanced Baldur's Gate 2 that we did not get during the Steam sale.

I am jumping on that one, maybe a few more. :nerd: :rollsnatural20:
When I tried that game recently the only problem I had with it was speed - it was too fast on newer computers. Even if you set it to pause on every event (which really made the game drag on), once you hit "Go" there was a flurry of animated sprites and half your party was dead. #toomanyreloads

YMMV

Daughter and I have completed 14 of the 15 main missions in Lego Marvel and both of us think it is wonderful. Looking forward to free play and all the side missions.
How old is she?

I'm asking because I have a 7 & 9 y/o.
14, but the game is more than appropriate for 7 and 9 (assuming you know how the lego games play is in general). Some puzzles might be a little tricky for the 7 but no issue if you play with her.

It helps if they are fans of Marvel since knowing the characters is what makes playing them so much fun.
I have 9-7-4 yr old boys playing it. No worries

If someone really likes Borderlands 2 would you also expect them to like Skyrim?
If you really liked Borderlands, you would probably much closer like Diablo III, they are similar in style.

Fallout is probably closer in spirit to Skyrim if you are trying to compare a shooter to Skyrim.

Anyone played Spec Ops: The Line? It's on Steam sale now for $7.49. The reviews say it is great story telling but has some flaws with the combat system and a weak MP mode.

I seldom play MP Is it worth playing the single player campaign?

It's a fun and different shooter with a few moral choices. Nothing groundbreaking but well worth the $8.Never played the MP but I played the entire sp in two settings. (Slightly short but entertaining)

I enjoyed it. It's a Heart of Darkness retelling. I didn't have problems with the combat. I thought the moral choices were cool but badly executed as there was really very little consequence to them.

I liked this game a lot. It plays a lot like Uncharted but both you and the various enemies have way less health, so you can die very quickly. It also has many more "problem areas" than most games -- it took me 10+ tries to get through 6-7 tough areas on the higher difficulty levels.

I thought it was pretty boring. Dubai as a set-piece was cool, but it was the same duck for cover, pop up and fire game for 7 or so hours.

This is absolutely true. I loved it because I like those sorts of games, but if you don't like that kind of gameplay, you will not like Spec Ops. I said above that it was similar to Uncharted, but one major difference is that there's no platforming or puzzle-solving to break up the gunfights. It's pretty much one Uncharted-like gunfight after another. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is going to come down to personal preference.

Normally I play one game at a time and don't move on until I've played it out. But after getting 3/4 of the way through AC4, I got completely sidetracked by Don't Starve, which I've had a hard time pulling myself away from. And the other day I downloaded Bioshock Infinite on PS+ and now I'm a few chapters into that. Not used to juggling games like this.

So far I'm enjoying Bioshock more than I thought I would. The setting is nice, and even if it's not as good as Rapture, it's still really good. People in here have talked about it becoming a chore to play after a while, but I haven't gotten that vibe at all. Granted, I just got Elizabeth so I've really only cleared the tutorial phase.

For those that have played Dark Souls, would I enjoy going back and playing Demon's Souls now that I finished Dark Souls? Or is it to much of a step back?

Tell me Bioshock Infinite gets more interesting. I'm very early but jebus it's boring.
Infinite took a bit longer than the first two to get going. Spend the first quarter of the game soaking in the atmosphere. But keep in mind that it's the last quarter that makes the game really shine.

I actually really enjoyed Infinite, but not because of the combat. I think the parts exploring the world and seeing the history of the city is where it shines. The combat is okay and flying on the rails is fun, but if you don't get into the atmosphere then you probably won't like the game.

I just finished up the Mass Effect trilogy - really glad I finally went and played through those. I thought the whole thing was top notch and rate it very highly on my "all time" list.

Just popped in Far Cry 3 - took a couple of hours to get a sense for what it was going for. I feel like most 1st person shooters aren't as crisp as CoD as far as controls go. Even though the CoD games have become very generic, they still have great feel and I know that I'll hit what I'm aiming at. Anyway, done a few story missions and starting to scavenge for animals since I definitely need to craft a bigger sack for loot. So far so good.

There's a rocking good wiki for this on IGN that has an interactive map that tells you where the various animals are (better than the game does). Doesn't help with all the aimless meandering about you'll do once you reach the sites, however.

I just finished "Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons" and I heartily recommend it. I've never purchased an indie game in my life, but this one came recommended to me by a friend and it received excellent reviews and several "Game of the Year" mentions. I bought it on a whim at the last Steam sale for a couple of bucks. As I've gotten older, I have much less time to play video games (unless it's something with the kids) so I can't invest in a 200 hour long saga like Skyrim. This one was only about 4 hours or so from beginning to end. But it's what's inside that counts, and the story told over those few hours is excellent.

In short, you use both analog sticks on a single controller to move both brothers around the screen at the same time. This allows you to solve puzzles and move along the game's path. I thought that the control sytem was pretty ingenious, really. You have to sort of train your brain to do two things at once. But it's certainly not a twitchy action game, so you can typically take your time to sort things out. The game is definitely story driven, but there isn't a single word of dialog that is in English (or any other known language, I believe - I think they just made up a language). That being said, you learn more in gestures and environments than you would with an omnipresent narrator. And you really get emotionally invested in the brothers you control.

A game like this is probably not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but I loved the story. It starts out fairly light-hearted, but things gradually darken. By the end, well... I am not going to spoil it. But if you're a bit bored by the same old video game cliches and want something a bit meatier, I strongly suggest this game.

Best of all, according to this, the game is currently free for PS3 users. It's definitely worth a few bucks, and is a no-brainer for a free download.

Got this during the last Steam sale too and am looking forward to playing. Great visuals and from the very beginning you can tell that the story will not pull punches but at the same time will not be gratuitous.

You may enjoy Limbo, a left to right puzzle platformer. There is no dialogue and no explanation of who you are, how you got where you are or what you are supposed to do but there is a payoff. One that will make you think. The puzzles are challenging, the graphics are visually interesting (even though it is entirely grayscale) and it won't take you too long to work through. The grayscale makes it potentially scary for children but IMO it is one that is perfectly suited for playing with the kids.

I hope you like Brothers - I'll be interested to hear what you think once you finish it. And thanks for the recommendation for Limbo - that looks to be the type of game I am gravitating to these days. It's a huge bonus for being available on the iPhone/iPad, because I have an exponentially greater chance of actually getting around to finishing it. I'm definitely going to check it out.

Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are almost the same game. If you like one, it's pretty much impossible not to like the other. IMO, Demon's Souls has better weapon balance and diversity in character builds, but it's hub-based world pales in comparison to the interconnected world of Dark Souls.

Edit: Also, Dark Souls has better bosses.

Playing Arkham Asylum right now. Fun game and I really like the visual style. The controls are a little clumsy on the PC, particularly when it comes to fighting groups of enemies but it's not that big of a deal.

I am also playing a little of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Boy the people over at frictional really know how to create an atmosphere and their methods for keeping the player always moving forward are really creative. The whole concept of a weaponless and physically limited character should bother me but it's actually quite cool and a nice departure from the norm. It's also very creepy. I think I am going to like this one a whole lot.

You can use an xbox controller for AA on the pc. Makes it a lot easier.
