Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (8 Viewers)

I started Last of Us last night on the PS4. Wow, that's a downer of an opening. (I played for another 45 minutes after that, but please no spoilers.)

My initial impressions are that the game looks very good - almost a higher res version of Uncharted (not surprising given the same studio), but the controls feel a bit more stiff than that franchise... this includes the aiming which I thought Uncharted wasn't all that great to begin with. These points are definitely not deal breakers for me as I'm much more interested in the story of the game.
The aiming is stiff and slow by design. There's an upgrade that will dramatically reduce the built-in weapon sway and make shooting significantly more accurate.
I figured given the nature of the game and characters. I guess it's more realistic...

Best game story I've ever played.

EA ever going to cave and bring Madden back to the PC? I may still boycot just one principle, but man I'm sick of playing 07 (never bought 08). I even downloaded updated rosters, which helped for a bit, but still it's getting to be really long in the tooth compared to other games now.

Can't wait to finish work and play this game some more! Did y'all use guides while playing?
Not for the first couple of playthroughs. I had to use a guide to find some collectables that I was still missing after that, but that's just me being OCD. Your first time through, it's a lot more fun just taking each area as it comes and learning the hard way.

Since then, I watched some youtubes to get better strategies for approaching particular spots. There are several scenes that always seemed to go south for me the way I was doing them, and there's almost always a relatively elegant way to get through those pieces.

Played the PS4 Last of Us last night. Enjoying it so far but the AI is pretty sloppy considering the stealth elements. Guys just walk over bodies you have taken out without reacting. That's bad for 2013/14.

Arkham origins is fantastic. The boss battles are challenging but even the regular battles are not just button mashing. They mix enough different enemies in each group that you cant just bull rush them over.

Joker's monologues are fantastic. Adds a lot of depth to the lore.

Just started this up yesterday. I've gotten my second upgrade, so I'm still pretty early in the game. There's a few gripes I have but pretty solid so far. I'd give it a 7.2/10 so far but it will probably be going up as I progress.

Arkham Origins was the best one IMO and I have no clue why it got such average reviews. The joker version in that one was phenomenal and he wasnt even Mark Hamill Joker.

Yea I was skeptical because the Joker in Injustice didn't sound right. Troy Baker did a much better job and sounded a lot like Hamil. Also glad Harley sounds like Harley.

I think one reason it got such average reviews was because of how WB Montreal messed with the combat system. Where it was a blast stringing together combos in the first 2 games, they gave the bad guys some unbeatable combo breakers that just make it feel tedious. Combine that a couple of really sub-standard boss fights for the series and it just feels like a lesser game. That said, the story is still a lot of fun, and I agree, Baker did a great job taking over the Joker mantle from Hamill.

I can understand this complaint, I hate the stun baton guys and while I have no problem dodging knife wielders I almost never get the correct timing for the counter punch, but I kind of disagree. I think it was a little easy in the first two games to just string together attacks which made them a little button mashy whereas in Origins you really had to have your tactics and timing down to get a good series of combos down. While frustrating at times, I enjoyed it a lot.

Which boss fights didn't you enjoy? Deathstroke was a little heavy on QTEs but still challenging the first time through. I thought the Bane battles were well done too. Copperhead and Firefly were unique and entertaining and I thought Deadshot was an excellent predator encounter and Croc was a decent warm up boss fight. Shiva & Anarky were pretty much just standard fights. I personally don't see them as substandard from the stuff in Asylum or City.

The voice work throughout the series is really top notch as well. I didn't even realize Hamill had left the series.

There's a few times when the game makes you like you have to do things their way, which bothers me. I will sneak up to a ledge/container/whatever and there's no drop down attack. Or your have you have to use a smoke bomb. The camera in tight quarters gets a little wonky sometimes too. There is also times when I think I should be able to use the grappling hook but I can't. Again not a major issue but these little things add up. The button response is a little slow too. There's lots of great things about this game they just are as seemless as they should be.

Yeah I can see all those issues but they don't seem to be problems exclusively with Origins. It seems that all of those hold true for Asylum and CIty.

I personally think it received lesser reviews because the novelty has worn off and ultimately it feels like more of the same game. The positive aspects of reviews relate to the fact that the story and game play is still great but the negative aspects relate to the fact that it didn't really bring much new or original to the series. :2cents:

Which I don't get. Some times I want the game to stay the same. Just give m new levels, better character development and an interesting story. Not sure what people wanted from this. It's great to me.

Sounds great and I'm in. I hope they improve performance and load times in this one too. WWE 2k14 was my first wrestling game since No Mercy and I was pleased with it. But I still saw many limitations that needed to be improved on and I hope they are this time.
cool last year's got a tad repetitive
I haven't played a wrestling game since the Dreamcast. How much of a learning curve am I going to face with the controls?

Honestly. Not a lot. A friend of mine who hasn't played a wrestling game since No Mercy (same as myself) and also isn't a big wrestling fan bought the game when I recommended it to him and we play several matches online quite often. We both found ourselves learning the new system pretty quickly, although it did take a few matches to get the hang of it. The main things to really get used to are the reversal system and learning how to kick out of pins (you can't just button mash, or you'll lose every time).

If you're gonna play WWE 2k14, I'd recommend playing the 30 Years of Wrestlemania mode first to familiarize yourself. It's not only a great nostalgic look back to the past, but a great tutorial to the game as a whole. For example, the first two matches in the 30 Years mode are Andre vs Studd (where you'll learn the basics of grappling and wearing your opponent down, since the object of the match is a slam) and Hogan vs Bundy in a cage (where you'll learn how to adjust to gimmick matches). I found reliving all of the Wrestlemania moments were really fun, especially if you were a fan at any point.

The create a wrestler mode is still phenomenal and you get 100 slots that can easily allow you to recreate any era, new or fictional. If you're like me, you'll rather download the created wrestlers because making one yourself takes forever.

Like I mentioned above, there are some areas where the game could be better, but from someone who longed for the days of No Mercy, I was pleased. I highly recommend.

Also from what I've been told, WWE '13 was about the same way except it focused on the Attitude era instead of the best of Wrestlemania.

Insein. Totally agree about Origins. Love it big time.

I am stuck on the Deadshot boss fight. Getting my ### kicked. Taking a little break and rethinking things. I get all his guys then it is mano e mano and I can't put him away before another round of goons come back.

Spoiler tag help would be appreciated!

The level of detail that some of these people put into their CAWs is amazing. There's no way I could have the patience to do that. Although I did have the patience to download a slew of old-school and Attitude/nWo era wrestlers and edit their entrances to closely resemble their real entrance, down to having the correct entrance music (that unfortunately only works locally, but I'll take it. it was a wished for feature back in the N64 days).

You can't take him out before the second batch of goons shows up. I think you get two or three rounds of combos on him then you better take to the rafters and deal with his goons before going after him again. There is another complication but I won't spoil it.

Oh and what the hell is Arkham City? The actual city in the comics I mean, not the game. I never read DC stuff so all I know about the DC universe is Metropolis, Superman's hangout, and Gotham which I understand is Batman's territory. I know from Asylum that there was a dude named Arkham but where does Arkham city fit into that? Is it a suburb of Gotham or something?

Finished Last of Us on the PS4 today. Winter is definitely the best chapter. They waited too long to split action between Joel and Ellie.

Overall I enjoyed it. Awesome story of course. The other elements were pretty run of the mill but certainly not bad. A bit repetitive maybe under the guise of a shifting and building story.

IIRC, Arkham is a borough of Gotham City. It's the area that surrounds Arkham Asylum.

Thanks... great info here.

I'm bummed that I missed out on WWE 2k14 as I had already traded in my last gen systems by the time it came out. :kicksrock:

I already posted this under the Pro Wrestling thread, but I'll post in here too given the interest in WWE 2k15...

WWE 2k15 will feature both the CM Punk/John Cena (2011-2013) and HHH/HBK (2002-2004) feuds.

http://www.operation...in-2k-showcase/

I'm disappointed about which feuds they picked in their new rivalries/story mode, but it's better than nothing. (I assumed they shied away from some of the older feuds as those wrestlers were prominently featured in previous installments.) Still, it's interesting that Punk gets showcased given how he walked out and now that he's no longer under contract.

The wrestle mania stuff was awesome. The league Raw stuff was meh. I hated how I had to schedule myself just to get matches.

I think I'm picking up a ps4 finally

Welcome aboard, GB. It sounds like we'll have a fair number of FBGs getting the game...

Just thinking out loud, but it would be fun to have some sort of unofficial FBG title with online matches. If anyone wins the title with Brock Lesnar, then they'll only have to defend it against other FBGs once every few months.

Not in the comics, no such thing. IIRC in the game it's called Arkham city since they walled in the area surrounding Arkham and it was dubbed Arkham City.

It wouldn't have been so bad if the game didn't crash every time I wanted to book a match different than what was randomly chosen. This was my #1 complaint to WWE2k14. I spent all of this time building a huge classic roster, creating old shows and I couldn't do anything other than sim the random matches because if I tried changing a thing it would crash. I've had my game memory get wiped twice and I've never had that happen in any other game. This is the biggest thing that needs to be fixed, IMO.

I hope they added online title defenses this time around. My friends have been trying to figure out how to do it in 2k14, but we haven't found a way. We mainly play triple threat TLC matches, though.

Perfect... the game doesn't come out until October 28.

Okay so I just checked and apparently it takes place one year after City (link). I like that it looks like you finally get to drive the Batmobile and it looks like Batman is wearing full armor so the gadget arsenal will increase. What I hope is that Robin/Nightwing becomes a playable character, he was fun to play in the City DLC and I would prefer him to Catwoman again (she was fun and all but I hated whipping around the city with her, just a lesson in frustration). What I don't like is they are calling it the "conclusion to the Arkham trilogy". First of all wouldn't this be the fourth one? And second of all #### that! Keep making more ########! But I am guessing that is just talk.

I am also guessing they directly address what I wrote in spoilers and make it work. Either way bring it on!!!
The Canada team that did the first two, but not origins is back on for the newest one. They are calling this part of their direct trilogy. The origins game doesn't really relate to these other three at all I don't think and was done by a completely different company.

Entirely different company? Origins played so much like the others that I would have thought at least they had some of the original team members.

I think a lot of the code was given to them as a base, but Asylum, City, and the new one Knight were developed by Rocksteady Studios and published by Warner Bros. For Arkham Origins, dev was moved over to WB Games Montreal. They are owned under the same umbrella, but separate devs. There was a lot of concern with that as the first two were so great, but I guess it worked out. Rockstead must have been too deep in working on the next gen one, I'm guessing WB wanted one in between and worked a deal to shuffle the dev over to their own studio.

So what do we know about Arkham Knight? Does it take place after Origins and before Asylum or after City?

I know they can write their way out of it but at the end of City they did

kill Joker
so that might complicate anything taking place afterwords.

Okay so I just checked and apparently it takes place one year after City (link). They did a really good job with the detective mode.
