On the topic of exclusives. I understand timed exclusives. You know 6 months later it's on PC and the other console. But I don't understand complete exclusives. Why not sell as many copies as you can? Why not make more money? This a volume business after all.

I mean as much as I'd like to play Bloodborne I am not spending 400 for the privilege.
Just to add a little more. For game developers, it's all about volume. If you have the resources to develop for both consoles -- and all but the smallest indie developers do -- it's insane to make an exclusive unless you're getting a huge check from one of the console-makers, enough to cover the sales that you lose by going exclusive.

For Sony and Microsoft, though, things are different. Obviously they want to sell a large volume of consoles, but they also want to avoid competing on price as much as possible -- both firms benefit from not fighting tooth and nail on price. That's where product differentiation comes into play. If all games were available on both platforms, how would Sony and Microsoft compete with one another? They have some differences in terms of specs, online functionality, etc., but they're not massive enough to prevent strongly downward pressure on price. Exclusives mean that some consumers are going to be willing to pay more for their console of choice, and both firms are happy with that. I'm a Sony guy, in the sense that Sony just has a tendency to make the kind of games that I happen to like. I would be willing to pay more for a PS4 than an Xbox. Steadymobbin is the other way around -- he likes Gears, and this all just comes down to personal preferences. The main thing is that Sony doesn't have to cut its prices to get my business, and Microsoft doesn't have to offer a lower price to attract guys like Steady. Both firms benefit from this arrangement compared to a world where consumers make their buying decisions entirely on price.
Consoles are loss leaders. They don't start making a dime on consoles for 2-3 years. All the profit is in the software from day one. So cutting out millions of players is an expensive proposition.
Sony has been doing this for many many years. I am sure they have access to financial models and historical sales that we don't that would change anyones mind on things like this.

I am not saying they always make the right decision but they certainly have all the data to make those choices where we have almost none to make our opinions.

Mass Effect has taken over my nights. Each day I want to get to bed early I go after just one more mission. Crazy addictive game. Really digging the RPG w/ action blend.

After I finish all of the ME, Dragon Age games and Skyrim, I'm sure I'll be back in here asking for recs of other games like them. But give me a few years to get there.
I would leave Skyrim off that list. It's not really in the same vein as the other two. So either it won't really be your cup of tea (it wasn't for me) or if you do really like it, it will eat up all your gaming time and for a long time. You already have a pretty full plate. There's two series that "ruin" this thread, Mass Effect and Fall Out. I suggest checking out the Fallout games before Skyrim. Just my opinion. I think Fallout could be seen as a cross between ME and Skyrim.

***Not trying to derail this thread.
Not a derailment. Opinions on games when people are seeking them is what this thread is for. Detailed walkthroughs and strategies goto the individual game threads.

I remember looking into Fallout last year. Looks like Fallout 3 doesn't work on Steam for Windows 7 so I need to jump right into Fallout New Vegas. Still worth it? I have it on my wish list waiting for a sale.

Fallout 3 works perfectly fine on Steam with my Win7. Where did you see that?

Fallout:New Vegas was head and shoulders the best fallout game for me. Far better atmosphere and story but that could just have been my experience. I was a bad MFer (evil)in that game.

It's called out on the store page for the game that it is unsupported for Win7. I saw the same thing on Far Cry 2 but bought it anyway and it never friggin worked.

Weird. I haven't fired up FO3 in a few years but I'm fairly certain it worked fine.

I know someone cares:

There is a glitch in Unchartered 1. The water room. Blue room. Whatever the heck it is called. I redid that room so many times that when I go to hell I will be awakened in that room as the main character and die over and over again in some morbid devil fantasy of groundhog day. It will haunt me. Anyhoo. On one attempt I was just annoyed to no end and decided to walk around the ouside of the fortress again for the heck of it. Made it to the yard where there is a gaitlin mounted gun. I took that and just shot everything. Of course, nothing explodes but I relieved some stress. But when I did it the scary music started meaning that bad guys were near - except they weren't. I go back to the water room and sure enough the bad guys are there and I can shoot them without getting into the room.

So, finally, success. Hate that room. Thank god for glitches. Moved on and am now in the flooded city with the chick. The story of the game is solid. The action sequences are solid. It will probably drag me back in now that I got out of hell.

### #### it. That is a great glitch :) .

The number of times I died in there on Crushing mode is embarrassing :(

I have played every Souls game which prides itself on being hard and nothing in those games compares to that stupid water room.

Nah man, I'm cool with it.

So this whole the Halo MCC is buggy thing hasn't really affected me until Halo 4. I haven't played MP too much, which really has been the crux of most of the complaints (e.g. I can't chat or listen in any MP games), but Halo 4 campaign corrupts most of my saved files. So, if I'm in the middle of a mission and save/quit, the next load will freeze and reboot the game. Utterly frustrating, especially since this as my second time throug. I guess I need to just go through and complete each mission in full - ugh.

Back to Black Flag for me while I compose myself.

Not optimized <> unsupported. It works fine on Win7. I played through the entire game on Windows 7.

edit (took out unrelated quotes for you guys too): Before you play on Windows 7, download the 1.7 patch here, then make the two changes to the config file below:

MY Documents\My Games\Fallout3\Fallout3.ini

---------

Find: bUseThreadedAI=0
Change it to: bUseThreadedAI=1
add below (new line):
iNumHWThreads=2

---------

I was able to play just fine without making those changes, but I've read that it takes care of most of the problems that others encounter.

It's not all about you dude. You can quote me on that.
Somebody already did this joke, and unlike yours, it was legitimately funny.

I'm not going to make more of deal out of it then I already have. IMO it's stupid to quote 10 blocks of text in a very slow moving thread. If this thing was new and there were more replies every minute or two I would understand.

I can only assume you guys are at desktops otherwise you would be just as annoyed.

I already made my point and said my peace. I won't harp on it any longer.

Sooooo did you all hear that Valve canceled that thing where freelance modders for Skyrim mods? ***Subject change***

Again, I made my point. I'm not the least but upset, and certainly not at anybody on this forum not named Cran or MC Gasbag.

Back to gaming....

Diablo III is boring as #### and pointless.

I've moved onto Army of Two which was free recently and surprisingly fun, especially playing with a friend.

Still looking for dogfight partners in IL-2 Sturmovik

Starting to save for a new XB1 now that theGears 1 reboot has been announced.

I tried this before the quotedown.

Did you read GabeN's ama on the matter? I thought that was the best bit of backpedaling I've seen someone in the game industry do in quite some time.

So Uncharted has zombies. As I found out.

Not gonna lie - I was yelling at the chick as much as Nate was to drop the damn rope. Didn't see that coming at all. Although I guess a really good rule of thumb is that when you walk into a room and for no seemingly justifiable reason there are guns and ammo everywhere for you to pick up - chances are good that it's not a reward. They do seem to fit the story though so it's all good. In fact, the story of the game itself is pretty solid. Nate is a good video game character.

Wolfenstein: The New Order

This is the "Sucker Punch" of video games. It looks pretty good and there's a lot of stuff going on but it's so...dull.

Yeah, that might be a good review of it. I haven't gone back to it in awhile. Forgot where I was - I think I stopped while doing the mini sub mission(s). Roughly. Haven't had the urge to go back. The story though is fairly good.

That is disappointing to hear although not shocking I guess. Still, when it goes under $10 on the Steam Summer Sale (or the winter one) I will still grab it.

Been caught lately playing just one more turn in Civilization: Beyond Earth. It's not really much of a game. The AI sucks at everything it tries to do. Winning isn't too difficult, just kinda boring. The aliens are the most interesting part of the game (along with the Tech Web, I suppose) but they quickly become either too easy (most all land units are pretty meh after about turn 75) or too dangerous (in the sea - yes, the Krakon will kill you with great ease early on).

Everything about trade routes suck in this game. Tedious. Time-consuming. Boring. Payoff is not great. I could live without this whole part of the game.

The new Quests get pretty boring after a play-through as well. They are the same game-to-game, generally (some are triggered by your affinity choices).

I'm not really sure if it's even worth trying higher difficulty levels as the game is just pretty stale. I think if I want to get my Civ on, I'm going to Civ5 or Civ4: BTS.

Not super fun. 1.5 out of 5 stars. Would not recommend.

MLB 15 on the PS4 is outstanding when I have the patience to watch myself swinging at obvious balls out of the strike zone. Might go back to that for a bit.

Would be worth $10 for sure. I got it for PS4 on clearance for $20 and don't feel like I was robbed or anything.

I just remember really enjoying Return to Castle Wolfenstein and liking that a bunch. The mystical angle > super tech angle, I guess.

KOTOR 2 is truly amazing. It's not really difficult at all as far as combat is concerned but it is so rich and nuanced. I mean they really put tons of effort into the story, voice acting and creating dozens (hundreds?) of decision/influence/DS & LS points). Truly amazing.

So what was the deal? It was going to kill the modding community ruin it by turning free mods into pay for mods?
It was a poorly thought out idea. Basically, mods make something for Skyrim then sell it on Steam. Bethesda get 45%, Steam gets 30% and the modder gets 25%.

There was a #### ton wrong with it. The non-Steam modder community (Nexus) started putting the stuff they put out for free onto the Steam pay site. Part of the reason some people switch was because other people (who had nothing to do with making the original mod) were taking stuff from Nexus and putting it on Steam. So, stealing free mods and making people pay for it.

Another thing was that the people got to set their own price so there was $10 apples and such.

The big thing in the end was that everyone saw it as the death of mods. It would basically turn into 3rd party DLC.

Personally, I can see what they were trying to do but they just didn't take the time to really think this through. At least Steam was decent enough to ax it. You know EA or Activision would have just kept it going an totally destroyed the community if it meant they got a quick cash grab. I think Steam will go back to the drawing board and come back with something much better.

So Nexus is ultimately unaffected by all this or is there a chance that this hurts them too?

I couldn't figure out why the game got so much hate for the first 85% of it either.

In the end Nexus is mostly unaffected. I'm not sure if the mods (not modders themselves) that went to Steam are going to be back up on Nexus or if they are going into a Steam vault or something.

The one lasting impact this mind have is the rift between the modders who kept their stuff free and the ones who went paid. I don't know much about the actual dispute/discussion between the two but it might be something that leaves bad blood that could poison the community. Or it could be a non issue already.
