Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (9 Viewers)

Bought Horizons today. Wow. At first, I was dieing a little more than I expected and thought "man, this sucks." Then I figured out the roll button and man, now I am an unstoppable killing machine. Well, ok, in the tutorial area amongst the weak begin-game enemies. Still, just really enjoyed my first session, which was five hours or so. And it seemed like an hour max! My wife is going to learn to really hate this game. It'll make her a PS4 widow.

We went to dust off our old Wii and it seems the Wiimotes are totally dead. As we were looking to price replacements, it occurred to me that it might be time for a new system. I've been out of the game for quite some time, so I'm not sure if the Wii U or the Switch is the way to go. It'd be mostly me and my 6-year-old playing, no hardcore gaming stuff. Any recommendations?

Had some Amazon gift cards from Xmas just hanging around...had been saving them for a day 1 purchase of Mass Effect but I just can't escape the Horizon: Zero Dawn hype. Looks incredible and is being described as a mixture of all the best parts of basically all my favorite games. Downloading now, can't wait to dive in. Sorry Dishonored 2, you're going back to the shelf for a while.

Can someone tell me how to map Lure to the D-Pad in Horizon? I got the d*mn skill but can't use it because my dD-Pad keys are all mapped to potions and I can't figure out how to swap it out. It says go to the Tools menu, but I can't find a tools menu!

All I can say is do not get the Wii U.

It automatically appears there in the lower left corner of the display. Up uses your medicine pouch, down uses whatever's shown in the bottom position. Left and right on the d-pad changes what's in that bottom position. Lure looks kinda like this: (((!))). Once you have it in the bottom position, press down to use it. You have to have an enemy in range an unobstructed. You'll make a whistling sound and they'll immediately go into alert and start heading toward you. It's nice that it will only attract one enemy at a time.

### #### it my internet sucks. Taking way too long to download this thing, only at 12/40 GB on Horizon. Should have done this last night but I am a weirdo who has to read all sorts of reviews and conversation about a game before I trust its what I want it to be.

So the RPG games are hit or miss with me.

It's not until recently did I give them another go.  Skyrim was a no go for me.

Witcher 3 I have a shot and was OK. Fallout was ok but I never finished

So far Horizon is fantastic!!! About 2 or 3 hours in

Crazy slate of console RPGs coming out in the near future, in addition to Horizon.

Mass Effect Andromeda of course

Prey looks incredible, more Bioshockish

Divinity: Original Sin 2 for the top-down, turn-based action RPG crowd. Loved the first one, jumped the combat for the genre forward a ton.

Torment: Tides of Numanera already out for the old-school Torment/Baldur's Gate fans. Opposite of D:OS, more story and dialogue than action. Ridiculously good reviews.

Shadows of Mordor sequel just announced for the fall, great action RPG.

I expect the new Elder Scrolls to be announced some time this summer, but who knows.

Crazy year ahead for us RPG nerds. Dunno which ones I'll prioritize with this kind of quality/quantity. And that's just the big name stuff on my radar. I'm sure some other stuff will come out of the woodwork.

When the new generation of consoles launched there was a definite lack of RPG content for a while. Now there's an overload and it's awesome.

I picked up Witcher 3 again after beating just trying to go after the highest level contracts. I've found that they're too easy. I didn't the highest two contracts and they were a piece of cake.

If I grab the DLC are both worth it or is one way better?  Am I overleveled?

the other games I'm thinking of grabbing are Oxenfree, The Witness, or Life is Strange.  Opinions on these?

I liked both DLCs, especially Blood and Wine. I thought both were much better than Wild Hunt.

Yea, thanks. I finally stumbled on how to rotate the things totally on accident. Why it said "Go to the tools menu" is beyond me.  It had nothing to do with any menu, tool or otherwise.

My girlfriend is playing Life is Strange and I can't stand to watch her play it. She's not loving it either. The concept is cool and clever and there's some interesting storytelling going on so far, but the dialogue and presentation of the story is so childish it's cringe-worthy to read/listen to. From the way the adult writers must have thought teenagers talk and communicate, to the terrible journal entries you have to read to get the background story, it is almost painful. Maybe the payoff is worth it in the end, if you can look past it. It wouldn't be for me.

MGS5 was stellar.  Steam says I have 261 hours on record (although 100 or so of that was afk).  You can tell it's Hideo Kojima's swan song.

Wheeeew. The hype on this Horizon game is 100% warranted, wow. So good. I just lost 6 hours in the blink of an eye, and that's not the type of gamer I really am anymore. This game sucks you in, keeps you engaged and always has you exploring and doing something without feeling overwhelmed like you're missing things or accumulating too many side quests, etc. If that makes sense. And the combat is so, so fun. Strategic, great controls, you feel like a badass without it being easy.

Those are probably the two best DLCs ever produced for an RPG and they scale up in difficulty so you aren't overleveled. Highly recommended.

Working on the Dark Souls 3 DLC. I'm just about done with the single player, prolly just one more play through to get a few spells.

Once I get back to the start I'll roll a new toon and start to concentrate on PVP. I don't normally play much PVP in Souls games but I'm starting to really like it.

I'll search around for some deals and give them a go. In the meantime, I picked up the old Knights of the Old Republic on my iPad. I've never played before, but it's pretty fun.

Anyone planning on getting Ghost Recon Wildlands for Xbox? Really enjoyed the beta and looking to purchase but would love to play with real live people over the AI.

PS - Sorry for my absence. Now have 2 year old twins and slowly (very slowly) getting some free time for gaming back.

Ugh, ugh, ugh. Based on everything I have read about Horizon, I decided I needed to go get the Tinker perk. So about three days back, my level seven character started down the perk tree to get it. Or so I thought. I missed by one and went down the, for now, totally wasteful forager path. I got all the way down, thought I had Tinker, went to do some mods, and discovered my error. So, back to level 7 and the proving ground mission. Couldn't even face it tonight. Guess I'll start anew tomorrow. Man, I enjoy the game but, I lost a lot of progress.

Newly level 10 here. Just about to leave through the outer gates for the first time after

the corruption outside the mountain. Rost

:(

Game still rocks. Me personally, I've mostly invested in the tree that slows time while you're aiming with the bow, and the stealth stuff. Thinking of going for the double and triple shot perks next.

So far I'm rolling with the beginner bow for low level stuff and hunting, for its quick reload and cheap arrows. Then I have  the sharpshooter bow for more damage when necessary, but shoots slower. Currently rotating between the tripcaster, bomb slingshot, and ropecaster in the other two weapon slots. The tripcaster is really fun.  Ropecaster is getting the least use so far just because I'm not taking anything too big on yet. Did hit the

corruptor

With it about 5 times, tying it down while I took chunks out if it's health. So it has its uses.

I gotta get used to using all the different traps and bombs though. I get so caught up in rolling around, preserving my health, criticaling downed enemies with my spear, aiming in slow-mo, etc. in big fights that I completely forget about all the other cool tools at my disposal unless I set them up first.

I am (was) past where you are. I bought the Tripcaster since the quest called for it but rarely used it other than to get the tutorial points. The Slingshot I find mostly useless. Doubt I buy that again since I am back before I bought it. Not even thinking about a Ropecaster. And I have yet to get the sharpshooter bow. I have also yet to use a trap of any sort. To be honest, the starting bow and the spear have been more than enough for as far along as I was. Including "The Demon" you referred too. I just use the bow, roll, get in with the spear, etc and so on. Maybe I'll check out some other stuff to try and make re-doing all this stuff a little more enjoyable. But I guess after Dark Souls and games like that, the combat seems fairly easy to handle. Maybe having just come off a run through of Far Cry: Primal helps too. That was all bow and spear also.

There is one bright side to the replay. I missed an item in the pace you were while healing. Since I have to redo that, I will hopefully find it this time. It is used in a quest I found later on but couldn't complete due to missing that piece.

I started out like you guys, but it turns out the three different types of bows aren't upgrades of your basic bow.  The bow you start off with is a hunter bow.  You can use fire arrows with that and as you upgrade you get some other ammo types.  Sharpshooter bow is for picking at enemies from a distance and you get ammo that's better to use against more heavily armored mechs to weaken them before they get too close.  The so far with the war bow I only have shock arrows, but it's used for delivering elemental attacks - I think when I upgrade it, I'll get freeze arrows, too.

Each arrow type only works with one bow type.  And, for you that love crafting, each bow type also comes with a separate ammo pack to be upgraded.

Yeah I've been upgrading the capacity of everything I can (arrows, potions, resources, etc.) as I get the pieces, but haven't had cause to really use half of it other than fooling around.

DallasDMac, did you miss the

Power cell
? I assume you know there's one in the ruins you fell in as a child as well.

Yep, I did. I know I have to go back after the other one. But I wasn't going to bother because I figured I missed out on the one and couldn't get back to that area.

Have you considered bumping up the difficulty?

Seeing some pretty bad vids on the Switch.  Just a poorly designed machine.
I really want to love this thing but it looks really cheap. Like it'll break from dropping it on the ground.

I'm waiting till Christmas anyway. Hopefully they work out the bugs.

This is probably old news, but a friend just told me there's an achievement in Fallout4 called "Massh0le," earned for killing 300 people.

:lmao:

Ok my initial impressions of Zelda. The map is HUGE. It has to be the size as the Witcher 3. It takes a long time to get places. Is completely open world. You can even try and defeat Ganon right away. Not a big fan of horse riding  (very difficult to control) or weapons breaking. That's my biggest issue right now. All weapons break. Even when you get a good one you are scared to use it. Weapons are plentiful but sometimes you get stuck with a whole bunch of crap. And dropping weapons forces you to pause the screen and goto inventory which is annoying. Also climbing is very slow. They made this too realistic.

Not complaining though. Those are just my initial impressions. I've played for hours and it feels like I haven't done anything yet.

I saw videos where the screen of the handheld, which is plastic, gets all scuffed up and scraped just by docking it.

May do that later on. I had to replay the mission with "the Demon" as I said. Man, took it out in about 10 seconds. Not an issue at all. I did buy the Sharpshooter bow. I did the tutorials for that. Hard to tell how good it is since the regular bow can one shot a Watcher. But I plan to use it when I try and snipe the dudes with Sona. My regular bow didn't get quite the one shot kill ratio I was hoping for the first time through that one. Maybe this bow will do better.

Yeah I'm thinking of bumping up the difficulty so I can get that early-game "oh #### oh ####" feeling back where I play carefully, stealthily, and pick my shots. Don't wanna be able to bully my way through everything just because I have so many resources that I can endlessly roll around and shoot everything to death without tactics.

Imma bit Assassin's Creed out at this point.  Played Freedom Cry after Rogue, it's okay I guess but it's really a DLC for Black Flag more than anything.  Some interesting challenges around freeing slaves but it quickly becomes a "rinse-repeat" situation.  Story is fine, very short, but I wouldn't call it a "must-play" in the franchise.  There is no animus, you are not playing an ancestor you just play Adawale, cool character, and without the future/past element it's pretty one dimensional.

Have Unity and Syndicate on my XBone, along with a ton of other a-list games that I haven't touched (Mordor, FO4, Mirror's Edge: Catalyst, Arkham Knight, FC: Primal, Witcher 3 & Doom) but I think I am going to jump in to Halo V: Guardians.

I'm sure there's a point in my life where I would have enjoyed Divinity: Original Sin. The game reminds me a ton, superficially at least, of Ultima 7, one of my all-time favorites. But I'm tapping out after trying it for a couple hours.  I don't think I've ever played a game that is less intuitive or welcoming to new players in every facet - game play, character building, story, etc.

after Divinity turned out to be a miss, I put Halo:MCC back in and started a playthrough of the remastered single player campaigns. I'd previously only done MP, but the remastered campaigns are excellent and really hold up. Halo 2 in particular was much better than I remembered.

oh that is not good.  I was just about to give Divinity a real shot this week.

Lots of people love it, but even the glowing reviews mention the lack of user friendliness. I'm just not willing to spend more than a couple hours getting invested in such a Byzantine game. YMMV.

That's a legit criticism of D:OS. I played about 6 hours, did lots of stuff in the starting town/area, and then restarted with all my new knowledge with a better party and understanding of how to play/build my characters/exploit the elemental weaknesses, etc. Much of the crafting info you'll just have to straight look up on the internet because there's no way you'd have guessed the combos, or it would have taken you hours of trial and error.

But with the knowledge I gained in my first 6 hours, my second play-through went smoothly and had some of the most rewarding turn-based strategic RPG combat I can remember since the early Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale/KOTOR days.

Now, the whole "restart with the knowledge you gained from your first playthrough" thing doesn't bug me because I'm always restarting with different character archetypes in big RPG's anyways, at least until I get a feel for what my favorites are. And a game like Skyrim, I've probably started many dozens of different characters over time. So even though its a much more linear game than Skyrim (for instance there is a finite amount of experience to gain in the world, period, so you have to basically do everything or build a certain way or be under-leveled, although once you figure out the elemental combos and control spells things get much easier) I just take the learning curve as part of the experience.

Does nobody remember the old Baldur's Gate games where you basically had to know the entire D&D Player's Handbook to make a good character that wasn't accidentally gimped from the get-go? And those were DENSE, old, inefficient rules to learn, too.

Oh, and the semi-silly story/dialogue is also a weakness to some although I find that charming rather than the equally vapid but very serious Diablo 3 story/dialogue.
