Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (3 Viewers)

Played Xcom 2 for a bit yesterday. I’ve never played an Xcom before but I know that you can lose the late game if you screw up too much in the lead up. Because of that, this game has me stressed out the entire way. Every little decision I’m worried about what it will do long term.

The combat I’ve made a lot of mistakes. Leaving people out in the open, getting too close to enemies, taking low probability shots and so on. The stress levels make the game less fun while I’m playing but having your actions matter instead of just “oh well, I guess I will just try again” is pretty fun. It also has me running the missions again in head trying to come up with better strategies.
The key to XCOM2 in all honesty is to kill enemies before they can even fire at your troops, thereby avoiding injuries. So when choosing upgrades, choose upgrades that allow you to kill things. Stuff like Blast Padding is a total waste.

I watched some “Tips and Tricks” on YouTube that said this too. However between my obvious mistakes and not knowing how to maneuver properly all the time, I still take damage. That and 3 people missing 70+ percent shots. The one gripe I have is those percentages. How do I only have a 66% chance of making my shot when my assault rifle is in the aliens face? Literally in it’s face.

Yep.  Your strategy in this game should be to avoid taking any damage whatsoever, which means that you always prioritize offense.  I get a lot of mileage out of snipers along these lines.  They never get hit because they're too far away, and they can murder a bundle of enemies in a single turn if you spec them right.

Unless you're playing ironman you can always reload a previous save.  Even in ironman you can shutoff if you accidentally rush into a crowd.

Stay in cover with overwatch on and bait enemies into acting and getting fired on.  Keep researching to get the different armours and ammos.

Thanks. That’s one of the things I was thinking about. If I put all but one person in Overwatch, then have my last solider shoot and break concealment, will the rest of the crew that’s in Overwatch get a “free” shot when the Aliens scatter?

Yes, exactly.

As for how to spec certain guys: one of the last skill choices a sniper gets is keep his turn as long as he gets a kill.  You pair that with added aim and ammo mods and you can rain death all day.  Same with grenadiers and their shoot twice skill with lowered aim.... Give them an aim boost mod then that skill is basically two shots for free.

Your first play thru should just be to make mistakes to know what to do for next time anyway. Don't sweat it too much.

Yes, But I'm not a fan of this. Mostly because, when the turn ends, it's the alien's turn to move. That can get you whooped badly at times. I prefer to make my own moves. So first guy takes his shot, aliens react, then the rest of my squad takes their turn.

Just finished Pillars of Eternity II.  If anyone is interested in advice on it, let me know.
Is the combat any slower / casting speed increased?

I wanted to like the first one, because that top-down, real-time w/ pause RPG is something I really enjoy. But I found PoE's combat just too fast - the minute you saw an enemy, they just charged you (especially your casters), making the battle a chaotic mess within a second (even with pausing/issuing orders). It was much faster than, say, BG2, which is what it tried to be. I read this complaint a lot on forums/etc, so I'm hoping they addressed it in the second game.

Picked up Prey on a friends recommendation, love it so far!  But the big news is we bit the bullet and got PSVR, my daughter had been bugging me for a while and the Doom VFR bundle just happened to be $100 off at Best Buy yesterday..  We have the Move controllers from PS3.  I didn't expect to like it but wow even just the demos are really pretty incredible.  My son couldn't have cared less about VR until he put the helmet on yesterday.  So we have Doom VFR and The Inpatient which is the sequel to Until Dawn.

My first console was the Atari 2600. I still have it and all my carts as well. Of course got an Intellivision. Baseball and Football were our favorite sports games of that era. Also loved playing Sea Battle and B-17 Bomber with the Intellivoice (Flack.....flack...).

Great memories of those two consoles. I think that is why us pioneer console guys (Gen X'ers) have such a massive appreciation of today's console games. I am floored by the sports games we have today as well as the RPGs. I remember playing Ultima 3 on the NES and the old Dragon Quest games. Today's RPG's (Skyrim and The Witcher for example) are just simply marvelous. Now I still love popping in some Baseball Stars, Super Bowl Tecmo Bowl and the like from time to time. The fun factor of those titles is still there. There is a great baseball game that gives you that old school gameplay called Super Mega Baseball 2 (the first one is also great), and the creators/customization suite is pretty awesome on the new one. You can literally re-crate the Baseball Stars teams if you wanted to on SMB 2.

There are a LOT of games coming over the next year that I'm interested in.

BLOPS 4 (first COD in many years that has my attention)
I think I'm one of the few remaining COD players in this thread.  What in particular has your attention about this one?  Is it the new game modes?  Or something else that looks good?  I've watched a few gameplay videos and I'm unsure if I am looking forward to going back to modern times after the WWII version.

I did just diamond my shotguns (look at me) in WW2, so that was fun.

I played the Dragon Quest game on my phone.  It played surprisingly well on it.  I recommend it if you enjoyed that game and want a portable version of it.

I haven't bought one since Advanced Warfare (?), so I don't know if some of this stuff has been in the last couple, but -

- 150 health vs. 100 health - seems like it would lend a little more credence to tactical play rather than pure reflexes

- No double jumping/wallrunning/jet packs/etc - I couldn't stand this about AW. Killed the game for me.

- Battle Royale mode in a COD game sounds fun

This is such a phenomenal game that should be adored by everyone and most people don't even know about it. I got both for free.

Yea, I never get jaded / nit-picky with graphics or such. When you come from a generation where your character was a square, and your "sword" was an arrow, almost anything better works :)

My brother and I still fire up activision baseball on the old atari 2600 he has in his basement when I'm at his house - always still fun for a game or two.

My favorite baseball game is Ken Griffey Jr's Winning Run.  I still have it for my SNES and play it occasionally.  It's actually the last game I played this year.

Seems like a lot of backlash towards Activision due to the Black Ops Pass and COD 4. Maybe they change it.
Can't get to the story at work.  Cliff Notes on the Pass?

I could play Baseball Stars without a graphics update without an issue.  Probably sevearl others from the era.  I started with pong, and while I love updated graphics, overall game play are more important.

Similar to a season pass. There were some early rumors they had done away with paid DLC for maps like Fortnite and Overwatch and others. I think the new Battlefield wont have paid maps DLC. Here's one article.

Call of Duty Fans In Uproar Over Black Ops 4's Season Pass

Activision is changing the way that DLC will work for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and fans are not thrilled.

On June 11, Activision announced that Black Ops 4's DLC would be delivered via what it calls the “Black Ops Pass.” While the full details haven’t been revealed, the paid DLC pass will still offer the 12 multiplayer maps and 4 Zombies maps normally included in Call of Duty’s past Season Passes, plus four exclusive character skins for the new “Blackout” battle royale mode and a bonus Zombies map.

The biggest change for the new DLC pass will be how the content is delivered. Instead of the content being broken up into four separate map packs, players can expect DLC to be distributed throughout the year. Releasing DLC on a more regular cadence is probably a good idea, keeping Black Ops 4 competitive with constantly-updated competitors like Fortnite. But it’s the rest of it that has players rankled.

Paid DLC maps split the playerbase in a terrible way that makes the optional content a disservice to everyone who plays. Players who shell out the money for the extra maps often can’t find the DLC maps in normal game mode rotation, or their party vibes are killed because their friends don’t have the content to join them.

I’m sure every map pack owner has been in the awkward situation of being in a full party of friends, and there is always that one friend who doesn’t have the DLC maps. Do you kick them from the party to play the DLC or continue to play the standard maps together? I previously reportedthis was a huge problem with Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, but this is a common issue with games that offer paid map packs.

Rather than fix this issue with Black Ops 4, it seems like Activision is just going to add a further sour taste to the DLC dilemma by not making the Black Ops Pass available as a standalone purchase or pre-order at this time. In the past, players were able to buy the Call of Duty Season Pass for $49.99 or individual map packs for $14.99 each.

The Activision Support page has listed the Black Ops Pass as being available as a standalone purchase at a later date, meaning there’s no way of knowing when the DLC can be purchased separately. This all-or-nothing approach forces those not boycotting Black Ops 4 to spend at least $99.99 on special edition bundles in order to guarantee they’ll have the DLC when it becomes available, adding another $40 to the game’s sticker price.

Compounding the problem is the fact that Activision is moving in a different direction than the rest of the industry. Fortnite’s model of free content with the option to pay for skins and accessories has proven to be such a success that some big publishers are finally starting to get on board with the concept. Electronic Arts said this week that the upcoming Battlefield V will ditch the paid Premium Pass model to offer free DLC for everyone, and give players the option to buy cosmetics. Ubisoft also made an E3 announcement that The Division 2 will have completely free DLC, ditching the paid pass from the first game.

The Call of Duty subreddit has become a hotspot to vent and threaten to cancel pre-orders. One recent post by Reddit user Geoffk123 has already seen over 2100 upvotes and hundreds of comments discussing the community’s disdain for the Black Ops Pass. In fact, almost all of the recent posts are venting on the topic. Ivan_JF gained upvotes by saying, “This is ridiculous. As if your games’ player count isn’t dropping enough you seriously forgot to follow the absolute biggest reason Fortnite and PUBG are doing so well. FREE CONTENT THAT KEEPS THE COMMUNITY ENGAGED.”

Another user asks perhaps the biggest question, to which we can’t know the answer until after Black Ops 4 is released on October 12: “Can a [battle royale] mode survive behind such a big paywall?”

When reached for comment by Kotaku on Thursday, an Activision representative referred us to its FAQ page on the subject.

Pre-ordered Fallout 76 to get into the Beta, that way I can try out the multiplayer experience before the full game comes out.

Also missed the news about a full remake of Resident Evil 2. If it's half as good as the RE:1 remake back on the gamecube, it will still be awesome. Can't wait to play this one again, one my favorite games ever. I can still remember playing it late at night with some buddies in our dorm room, the sight of a licker through a window just before you encounter it was one of my favorite scary ### tension building moments from a game ever.

That game scared the crap out of me.  My buddy and I would play in my basement with the lights off and the stereo turned up.  It would scare the crap out of us.  We would take turns playing and we really didn't mind when our turn was up because we were ready for a break.  I struggled playing it alone back then.

I got a good 80 hours into FO4 and never finished it.

Going to start totally fresh this summer and use mods (PS4). I want nothing to do with base building either.

I feel bad for the people that make these games. It takes a lot of effort and time. Plus, they seem to be very skilled. Usually Black Ops games have decent stories too. Obviously, that doesn’t apply to this game though. But the people making the games don’t get to control things like how to release DLC and such. The constant money grabs that Activision makes is very disappointing. Especially, when they are willing to rip off other games but can’t control their money list enough to utilize a significant part of what makes those games so big.

Finished up Far Cry 5 last night and like was said earlier, the ending was a real let down.  I actually enjoyed the game for the most part and haven't put that much time into a game since GTA.  I normally don't enjoy First person games, but I actually had a good time with it.  That said, now I am looking for something else.  Any recommendations on an open world game with a story line much like GTA or Far Cry 5.  Remember, I am an old fart that had to have my 11 year old help me in some of the areas of Far Cry so take that into consideration.

I haven’t played the new one but Wolfenstein is might be a good option.

Ever try Crackdown?  I had a really good time with it, and you can probably grab it for $5.

Toput a positive spin on this, is is reasonable to read this as the season pass is potentially cheaper, and will increase the population in DLC maps because you have to buy all or none?  It seems they tried to fix problems, with an albeit less than optimal solution, but they at least tried to listen?

Which would be to...
Basically the opposite of the "gunslinger" line.  I forget the name of the perk, but one of them lets you keep firing until you run out of ammo as long as each shot results in a kill.  So you can use your other soldiers to soften up multiple opponents, and then kill 3 or 4 of 5 enemies with one sniper.

Started playing xcom2 last night.  It took me a few missions to realize that the people that I had on my squad that got hurt were replaced.  Kept wondering why my sniper was no longer a sniper.

Is there a way to add more people to your squad?  Is it just, "run out of people and get replacements"?

I think you can buy recruits but, to be honest, I never had to do this. It seems if you have that many laid up in sick bay, you need to work on your tactics. As mentioned above, the key to this game is to not get injured at all. It will happen on occasion, but shouldn't be happening to the point where you are out of soldiers. Maybe hit some online guides for tactical advice.

When does the BETA start?
Don't know yet, for now you register on Bethesda's website with the code you are provided and it basically says we will contact you with more information when the BETA is ready to go. Apparently, the BETA will be rolled out to XBOX One players first, that's on Bethesda's FAQ's for the game.

Should be able to recruit in the armory.  One of the things I really appreciated about xcom 2 was that you can make your own player pool to recruit from.

That being said if you're coming from the original xcom there is a little bit of a transition in game play.  Where as you could play more iso with your squad in the original, the sequel really is unit tactics.  Especially early on I found it important to ambush when breaking cover and try to limit the yourself to full cover positions (particularly if at the same height or less as the enemy).  Flanking and destroying cover are emphasized in this game.  One tactic that is still true from the original is to not rush ahead if at all possible.  Triggering 2-3 groups at the same time can be devastating early on in the game.

I figured out the recruiting thing last night but is there a way to determine who is going to be a sniper vs say a ranger?  And I'm starting to play with the squad a bit.  Having my sniper who can shoot forever if they are in someone elses range seems pretty awesome, he's been wrecking shop.

I didn't even know you could destroy cover.  Can you give me an example of that?

I watched this YouTube and it helped. The same person has a bunch of videos that seem pretty good.

You can assign them roles in the guerilla warfare pod (or one of em).  You want to keep you guys alive so they level up though.  Should have a A, B and maybe even a C squad

Now I feel like I need to go back and replay XCOM2.

The one drawback of this game is how easy it is to accidentally uncover enemy positions and trigger another pod.  It really discourages rushing/flanking maneuvers when you know that doing so can unleash a new wave of enemies after you've used a bunch of actions already.

Yep. deadly. I personally prefer to sit back and try to hit a whole pod with a grenade. It won't kill them after early game, but does enough damage that the rest of the squad are on mop-up without much movement. Like Ivan said, moving to far forward (like deciding to use your sword on something) can trigger a whole other pod when you have little or no moves left. That can ruin your day real quick. I really don't want to move any further than the position of my most forward guy before I initiated battle.

Yeah, and this is a game design problem.  If you're going to design a tactical turn-based game that rewards flanking, then you need to sort out the enemy placement such that flanking isn't severely punished by unleashing another wave of enemies.  I mean, I'm happy to sit back with my snipers and pick guys off, but it does kind of limit your tactical options.
