Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (3 Viewers)

How did this game go from a huge disappointment to being so good?  Did they release the original version way too soon?
From what I can tell they were a 12 person indy development team with a big idea that Sony latched onto. They received AAA marketing dollars but didn't take (or maybe weren't offered) any AAA development help, over-promised and then under-delivered.

Now two years later, the game is reaching its true potential. Sucks for the early players and those who pre-ordered under false pretenses, but its gotta be one of the biggest gaming comebacks ever. Its a top game on Steam since the NEXT update dropped

The update put everything in the game that should have been there 2 years ago. On top of the sheer vastness of the game -- something unlikely to ever be rivaled -- everything else is there now. A complex crafting system, a suit/ship/weapon upgrade system, trade markets, a reward system for exploration, missions (aside from the main story).

if I want to play on PS 4, can I just buy the original game and have it get updated after installation or is this recent version a brand new game I have to get?

This is going to sound kind of lame, but I’m really having a blast playing PUBG mobile on my iPad. It’s sad how much more fun it is than the XB1 version.

speaking of Steam, i was thinking of messing with my chromebook to run Linux and Steam on it. Heard that Steam as a quasi-console setup now. Is that true?

Ok tried No Mans Sky one more time this morning. Was placed on a much cooler planet to start. A frozen planet. Got into my own storyline and yeah.....enjoying it again. Found a cave asap to get in from the cold.

Took me a little while to get my legs under me again. Just taking my time though. Want to explore this planet a lot before I head out on my ship.
You can also use your ship as cover.

Im enjoying it so fart but can see how it can get boring. I'm going to try and play in spurts to prevent the monotony of resource gathering.

Internet was down this all weekend but my local save of no mans sky let me play it.  Went through the whole tutorial to the point where I needed to warp to a different system.  That's when not being online would not let me progress.  I decided that was fine and hit the rest of my planets in the system, built up a cool looking base, built up tons of supplies and generated about 20million credits.

Internet finally came back on around 9pm last night and I decided to warp out but it still wouldn't let me.  Saved my game and found out there was another 3gb patch that needed downloaded.  Installed that, opened the game and was back at my base.  My base was there, all the items I'd placed were there but my entire inventory was gone (including the thing I needed to warp) along with all of the credit's I'd made while playing offline.  Got so frustrated I ended up quitting for the night.  Ugh.

@-arcK- Can I play offline? Or with crappy internet?
Apologies for the late response. I got addicted all weekend and didn't even go online except when looking up NMS tips.  :oldunsure:

Anyway, in case no one else answered your question, I believe the answer is yes. Obviously multiplayer is off the table, but I believe everything still works fine offline. You may not get official credit on the servers for your discoveries, but regardless you're still rewarded in-game for them.

So I have No Man's Sky.  I was a sucker that did a preorder two years ago.  I actually played a decent amount (20ish hours) at release.

I almost traded the game in a while back at Amazon (bought the hard copy version) but it was only worth like $3 at the time.  Guess I need to reinstall the game and get the updates and give it a fresh try now, 2 years later.

Yeah..been using my ship...also summon it when I am desperately trying to seek shelter with a storm happening or rapidly rising or falling temperatures. And I agree. I am playing in spurts because the resource gathering is the slog....a real slog. In short doses though this game is a lot of fun and can be whatever adventure you want to make of it.

Resource gathering doesn't have to be a slog. If you're like me and would rather just explore/fight stuff, try to find an S-class scanner multi-tool upgrade (you can stack up to 3). This will allow you to make a good amount of money pretty quickly. Then, find a system with a healthy economy and you can buy most of the materials you will need, with a few exceptions.

So is No Man's Sky like Borderlands?  I am intrigued by the good reviews on the new version but Borderlands was a bore to me, and that's kind of the vibe I'm getting from the gameplay videos.

Nothing like Borderlands.....like not even close to that type of game.

This is IMO Minecraft in space with the latest update.

Almost the opposite of Borderlands (which is like Diablo FPS). Very little real gunplay, almost all resource gathering/mining/crafting/building/flying

are you sure you were looking at the right game?

No Man's Sky is about as far away in similarity to Borderlands as you can get in gaming.

still hitting fornite hard?
Kinda burned out.  The game has gone from like 85% gunplay and 15% building to like 85% building and I just don’t enjoy that as much. I’m at like 97 wins total so I’d like to get 3 more, but I need a break.

Decided to fire up KOTOR again this weekend.  I really wonder if that fan remake in unreal 4 will ever actually happen.  I always re-check that out every couple of years when I do a play through.  They've never published a schedule or release date, but they seem to have been continually working on the project over the last 5 or so years and do share regular updates.  What I've seen looks pretty nice.  Really hope Disney doesn't come in when they are finally done and shut it all down, would be ridiculous to let it go on then just kill it at the end.

Either Disney or EA might. Cruel to let them dangle out there working on it though. Maybe they'll buy it off of them if it's good enough.

As a side note, EA/Disney is really pissing away the Star Wars Franchise rights. We've had how many Star Wars games since they took over? Battlefront and Lego Star Wars? Oh and a handful of crappy mobile games. Between the lack of games, abysmal toy sales and crappy movies, Star Wars is really taking it on the chin.

Yeah, hopefully they can get around it by both giving it away for free, and I guess it's installed like a mod where the original game is required, so hopefully they can just call it an overhaul mod that seem to be pretty prevalent and allowed.

Big time on the license.  They keep saying something was going on at one of their studios and they hired away one of the naughty dog creative directors (who has I think left since the), but just no concrete info.  Could never figured out why they killed that 1313 game flat out, it looked pretty promising.

same, I don't have near the win total you do but I hear you on the building aspect for sure, it has changed.  My kids are still into it, its now more of a bargaining chip for me to make them do stuff to earn playing time.

Probably brought up too many prequel and EU tie ins that Disney wanted to ignore.

Other than early game, frantic survival resource gathering, I think mining is mostly for suckers. You're right that it's monotonous and can get boring. I hardly do it at all now, only 15 hours in or so. I keep refined stacks of carbon, ferrite dust and sodium at all times, and some oxygen. Other than that I spend almost all my time exploring and finding other things that are worth a ton more than most resources. Ancient ruins especially, that's an easy/more fun way to make millions.

Obviously if I need specific resources to craft something, I will go find it and mine it. But I'll usually find a big deposit if possible and do the whole thing with the terrain manipulator (turn the size of the beam to the smallest setting to get the most out of each deposit). That and "Metal Finger" deposits of uranium and gold make up most of my traditional mining.

Early game a good way to make money is to fly up to an asteroid field and blast away. You will get stacks and stacks of Silver, Gold, and most importantly Tritium. Now uranium is better for fueling your ship, so if you've got plenty of that, you don't need to use the Tritium. Refine it into Platinum for good $$$ early on. That and whispering eggs is how I made most of my money so far. Which admittedly is only 4 mil or so, but seeing as how I haven't really done anything I'd really consider grinding I think its a pretty good amount. And I haven't even lucked into an S class scanner mod or the really lucrative ancient ruins loot yet.

Yup 100%. Battlefront is a shell of itself compared to the LucasArts released versions. Simply a JAG FPS with some Star Wars skins slapped on the soldiers.

I can tell you they're raking it in on their mobile game.  I have probably 15 people that work for me that play it and every one of them has spent money on it.  I'd bet around $100/person.

Sigh. I hate that trend. Cheap to make, gameplay is simple but addictive filled with microtransactions. It won't go away as long as it makes money but mobile games are just the least memorable, time wasting things in the industry.

hmm, I purchased it at $9.99 and when I click on that link it is still $9.99 right now.

Could the link be regional in that it is showing a price of a store local to each person who clicks?
Showing $9.99 this morning. Guess we were a day behind in these parts. Or maybe they are selling X per day at that price?

So... I bought PUBG for XB1 back when it released and it’s sucked. I was kind of shocked that they charged for the product at that time, and I even “returned” it.  Then I heard it got better in March, bought it again, only to find out it was kind of still a mess.

I gave it a 3rd chance yesterday and.. not bad. It’s never going to run as smoothly as Fortnite, but I can say that it’s now without a doubt playable and fun. I suppose I’ll give them kudos for continuing to work on it and improving things because it’s a huge difference.

Also my brother told me to download Vigor.  I grabbed a free trial but haven’t turned it on yet. I believe it’s a DayZ type game where you going into an active open world and scavenge but people can take your stuff. You head out, get what you can and then get to your safe house.

Ill give it it a try tonight.

I started playing Star Wars: Heroes about a month ago. As far as mobile games go, it’s not bad. I’ve put an excessive amount of hours into it and haven’t hit the pay wall yet. I can see it coming but usually with these types of games you basically get 1 free day.

Not sure what it was like on xbox, but for PC, they were very clear that it was not very polished yet.  I downloaded it and found out my vid card was a generation too old.  Never returned it.  Getting a new vid card this week.

I also DL'd fortnite and found out it had similar requirements.
