Vikings/Buccaneers Questions for Beat Writers (1 Viewer)

Folks, Cecil and I are going to be talking to Adam Doctolero of KFAN and Jim Flynn and Scott Reynolds of the Pewter Report tomorrow on the audible. They'll be reporting from their team's OTAs. We'll definitely cover the big topics on everyone's mind (Tarvaris, Peterson/Taylor, WR mess in Minn, QB sitch in TB, Caddy, Mike Clayton, etc). We also want to know what questions you would want asked, and if time allows, we'll ask some.

ETA: Looks like we've got Jim, but not Scott, but they're both excellent, so no worries.

Definitely a good corollary to the question about Clayton (which pretty much amounts to "what gives?"). Stovall made some key catches for them late last season, so he has some good momentum to carry over to this year.

In his last 4 outings v. the Bucs, Steve Smith has posted games of 5-106-1, 5-103-0, 7-112-0, and 8-149-1. Is there anything the Bucs can do to stop Smith from imposing his will on the Bucs defense or are we destined to watch Smith run free in the secondary yet again this year.

all vikes questions, screw the bucs

how does robison look? mccaughley look like deer in headlights or is he taking advantage of no winfield? whats the safety situation looking like? is kevin williams always high or does he just sound like it? will their be a stable right side of the line, or will it be a turnstile all year? how does AD look receiving? udeze still gonna suck? is rufus going to be backing up greenway, or will he be learning the strong side?

Jim Flynn's a real good guy. We emailed back and forth a few times, as he was very open to answering questions from this closet Bucs fan.

I"d love to see what Doctolero thinks Shiancoe will do at TE this year. Almost every FBG staff member and draft participant I've seen have shunned him (ranked right near the bottom of TEs), but he's a guy I think will really surprise folks and be a big time fantasy sleeper given his draft position. A 5-year, $18 mil contract, Childress specifically targeted him in free agency, and the TE in Childress offenses gets a lot of action (LJ Smith had over 100 targets in 2005). Yet he's been virtually ignored by fantasy types. I'd definitely be interested in Doctolero's take there.

I'm also interested in how long TB is going to roll with underperforming Clayton before giving Stovall his shot. I noticed he did have 4 targets in each of the last two weeks of the season.

Besides AD and CT, I would like to get Doctolero's opinion on which other Minny RBs will make the final roster. And Why?

Ask if Quincy Black Rookie LB is looking in camp so far and what are his chances of actually starting ahead of B Ruud.

What does the starting OL look like for the Bucs?

ETA...player-specific question. Will Buenning be the Center, Sears the LG, etc....

What is the role that Siancoe is going to fill - will he be more pass catcher or blocker?

Will Ryan Cook be the starting RT? Who is going to be the RG?

Does it look like the Taylor/AP tandem will be more Addai/Rhodes or McAllister/Bush?

Does Troy Williamson show any marked improvement?

How does it look to shape up for E.J. Henderson in the middle this year?

What are the chances Ray Edwards can emerge as a starter?

Does Cedric Griffin show any ill effects of the pinched nerve injury suffered at the end of last year?

Why is Antoine Winfield all of sudden turning into a crybaby?

I need a full report on the Bucs OL...is it really going to be any better? I am so tired of hearing about "Cadillac" and his potential.

Michael Clayton came out as a rookie and was sensational, then he did poorly the last couple of seasons due to injuries and also the QB play alst season. "Cadillac" exploded his 1st 4 games of his career and then he went bye bye ever since.

These are the two players to me that stand to benefit the most form an improved OL both run blocking and pass blocking. Clayton was taken 1.15 and had over 1,000 yds as a rookie...what more did people need to see...last year he completely disappeared.

And who is the QB in Tampa? I feel like Garcia will win out...what is Simms prognosis?

Thanks Bloom, you da man.

Mewelde Moore has shown good running ability (4.8 YPC on 244 carries in his career) and of course is excellent as a receiver out of the backfield. His contract is up in 2007. Any rumblings, with Peterson and Taylor on board, that Moore may traded this offseason to try to get some value for him rather than letting him sit underutilized and then be gone?

Yes! And I'm wanting more information on Justin Gatlin.

VIKINGS

1. What changes, if any, will be made to the Vikings defensive scheme and the roles its individual defenders will play now that Leslie Frazier is serving as the team's defensive coordinator?

2. How is the recovery of linebacker Chad Greenway progressing?

3. [sarcasm] Are the Vikings planning to do ANYTHING on offense this season other than EITHER 2-3 yards and a pile of dust OR a three-step drop and quick 5-6 yard pass?[/sarcasm]

The Vikings' OL struggled with zone blocking last season. Are plans in place to keep the scheme or go back to man, which Birk, Hutch etc. excell at? What are the Vikings going to do to improve their run and pass-blocking. As someone asked before, is there going to be a revolving door on the right side of the Vikings line again? (Will we have to endure another year of Artis Hicks being overmatched again?)

Its a good thing these writers are willing to come on multiple times
Are you saying the SP acts like an overweight person at a buffett line Vegas? You did say to fire up some questions.
And I am always impressed with what this community produces when we make that kind of request. Im not sure how much time we'll have with these good people, but I'll make sure to ask at least one of these for each team.

What kind of potential do the Vikings see in prospect WR Todd Lowber and how do they see him fitting in with the team? How long do they feel he'll take to develop seeing as he's never played organized football? Why did they sign him for 3 years right off the bat?

For TB - What's the outlook for my main man Ken Darby? How's he looking?

For MIN - How's the WR sitch shaking out? I've seen some websites that actually have Jason Carter as the #2 WR. Is his future promising?

Where do you see Quincy Black fitting in future seasons? Does Cato June have a future at WLB if he impresses this year?

Is Kevin Carter going to see snaps at left end or will he play mostly undertackle?

How soon will the Buc rookie safeties win jobs? Any chance Tanard Jackson moves to corner?

<><><><><><><><>

Second the Chad Greenway recovery question.

Will Erasmus James play ahead of Darrion Scott at left end if healthy or will he bump Ray Edwards back to the second team?

Thanks Sig.

Warning: Doctolero loves Jason Carter. We'll ask him about Carter just to get his gleeful reaction.

Thanks everyone for your contributions. Both interviews are complete and should be out soon. We had enough questions to easily fill 5 segments with each writer - lucky for us Adam and the Pewter Report guys are generous with their time and energy, so Im sure we'll have them on again.

Adam gave us some great insight on expectations for Troy Williamson and Tarvaris Jackson, and some interesting scoops on what to expect from the DE position and the condition of Chad Greenway. You'll also definitely want to hear what he has to say about Adrian Peterson.

Jim gave us his takes on Caddy, Mike Clayton, the Simms/Garcia battle, Bryant, Boston, and the defensive draft class among other subjects. There was one great scoop about the D that certainly changed my outlook for the unit in 2007.

We'll be doing a "tour of the league" with beat writers over the next 2 months to help kill the time before training camp and real news begins. Hope y'all enjoy.
