Vikings new Defensive Coordinator (1 Viewer)

Norseman

Those who hoped Cotrell to be retained may be disappointed,

According to today's St. Petersburg Times, Mike Tomlin, Bucs defensive backs coach will be named Vikings DC as soon as today. Hopefully he can do as well as Tony Dungy and all the assistants he has had that have moved on to other DC jobs. :excited:

Only link that I could find now.

Yeah he's going to Minny. He's a good one. He'll be a head coach in five years.
We Vikings fans sure HOPE he'll be a great defensive coordinator! I'd be okay if he had to wait longer than five years to graduate up to a head coaching position though..... ;)

Fixed.

As a Vikings fan, I hoped they would keep Cotrell. The defense started to come together at the end of the season, and I think giving him a little more time might have been good. But at least we are bringing in someone I like.

So we'll be playing more of a cover-2 defense, meaning what for Chavous? Chavous gone and hopefully Offord wins the starter role, assuming he'll be healthy come August? I was thinking we'd see more tight man coverage with the corners and more blitzing with the OLB'ers and safeties, somewhat what they do in Philly.

Couple of my thoughts:

Cover 2 : The current defensive roster is more suited for the cover 2 then the 3-4 hybrid Cottrell wanted to run. We got a lot of young defensive linemen who could emerge; Erasmus James, Kenechi Udeze, Kevin Williams, Spencer Johnson, CJ Mosely and Darrion Scott. We are deep at the defensive line so a 4-3 (cover 2) is probably ideal.

Fred Smoot Antoine Winfield is ideal for the cover 2, but Fred Smoot is not. The nice thing about the cover 2 is you don't need great (cover) athletes at cornerback, because they primarily play zone. Not sure how Fred Smoot will adapt to the cover 2.

Middle linebacker Cowart will not be able to play MLB in the cover 2, a position which requires a lot of speed in the cover 2. Dontarrious Thomas and possibly EJ Henderson could fit this mold, but these two need a lot of coaching to get up to a Sam Cowart on a mental level.

All Good points. Just remember 25 mil under the cap again. I still se 2 ol and 2 LB's taking the brunt of that money with RB (1st Round) and Safty in (2nd) in the Draft.

I never liked Cottrell as the D-Coordinator, so I'm glad that's over. I know nothing of the new guy. This sounds like this make it look like the Vikings will draft a linebacker with their #1 pick this year. (Come on down DeMeco Ryans).

Vikings better hope he adapts better to the Cover 2 than he adapted to having to cover Steve Smith in man coverage. :o Or is smoot just part of the Zygi Wilf Family Values (and get a big-###-hand-over-fist-money-making stadium) Purge of 2006.

Dingdingding! And Brian Williams outplayed him even when Smoot got healthy.

Smoot was one of the biggest free agency busts last year.

Basically, this team is shaping up to be an extension of the Badgers. Will Dayne be a free agent next year? How about Troy Vincent?

I heard they are shopping Daunte for Brooks Bollinger.

Cottrell Fired:Vikings Reportedly Fire Defensive CoordinatorMINNEAPOLIS (Jan. 9) - Brad Childress apparently has made his first imprint as coach of the Minnesota Vikings. The Minneapolis Star reported Monday that Childress made a host of changes to his coaching staff, including firing defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell.Under Cottrell, the Vikings ranked 21st in total defense last season. He had served as the club's defensive coordinator since 2004.According to the report, other coaches that were let go were Wes Chandler (wide receivers), Dean Dalton (running backs), Mark Ellis (assistant strength and conditioning), Rich Olson (quarterbacks), Jim Panagos (assistant defensive line and special team), Kevin Ross (assistant secondary), John Tice (tight ends, assistant offensive line) and Rusty Tillman (special teams).Childress was named coach Friday, replacing Mike Tice, who was fired hours after a season-ending 34-10 victory over Chicago on January 1.01-09-06 12:48 ET

And to be honest, I think Brian Williams is your proto-type cover-2 cornerback. 6', somewhat physical and solid in run support.Whoever said Nappy Harris for MLB, yeah we can consider him as I think he has the tools. Jury still out if he has the NFL makeup to play at a high level in the NFL.

SOLID FEEDBACK!!! I love the way you explained how he's too short, tall, fat, skinny, fast, slow, strong, weak, smart, stupid, has played the position, hasn't played the position and his fro is too large. It's analysis like this that keeps me coming back to these boards. THANKS!

Oh good lord. He had 25 tackles for a team that had one of the worst set of linebackers in the league. This after going from 107 his second year to 61 his third and ultimately being traded away FROM a team equally awful.Does every response need in depth analysis?

not in depth but maybe something a bit more than " ". last year he was moved to OLB in a 3-4 set. the year before that he was in a 3-4 set. the year he did play well he was in the 4-3. MAYBE there's something to it, huh?

The Vikings did not run the 3-4 for the entire season. When they did run the 4-3, Napoleon Harris had little to no impact. Why are you jumping on me with both feet like this?

Okay. Let's just say I saw Nap play this year and he wasn't very good. He's not the answer for the Vikings at linebacker. That's just my opnion.
