Vilma (1 Viewer)

I am totally bowled over by this one. I have seen him ranked in the top 20 and then in the 40s, but if you were building a dynasty team for the future, where do you take Vilma?

Three years ago I would take him as my first defensive player. Now maybe a lb3 so I would say in the 30th range.

Things change. I'd still take him higher than most in a dynasty because he's proven to have the talent to be a superstud.
:moneybag: One thing to add....his contract expires after 2008. If he doesn't play at a high enough 3-4 level to suit Mangini, it isn't out of the question that they trade him. He would jump to the top 5 for me if he plays in the middle again. Either way, I can't see him staying long term with the Jets. I think he can hit the top 20 this year, and I personally have him ranked 11th in dynasty.

talent over opportunity EVERY time when considering young players in dynasty leagues

he is young and if he or Mangini is gone by 2009 or so, you forget that you even whined about his "3-4" years if he gets back in a "4-3" and starts getting a gillion tackles a year again

(don't laugh about the Mangini being gone part, how many times has the new guy come in and been a "savior" the first year only to be fired after year 3 or 4)

Jets' Vilma has clock set at 3-4

but Mangini also has steadfastly maintained that Vilma can be a good fit in the 3-4.

"He's been excellent," Mangini said of Vilma's work both in the off-season and in camp, "and we've put in quite a bit more [in the playbook] here early on in camp than last year. Jon is able to see it and then also add some of the nuances that we had. His recall is outstanding."

Mangini also believes that a quality linebacker can be successful in any system.

"I've seen a lot of different linebacker types playing the system over the years," he said, "and they've all played at a good level. It's not that there's only one way to necessarily play it. It develops and you figure out the best way for you to get those jobs done. Tedy Bruschi played it very differently than Ted Johnson did, than Roman Phifer did, than Junior Seau does.

"It's the same system [and] it's the same responsibilities, but each guy caters it to the things they do well."

I didn't think Vilma was a good fit, but Mangini says he is. He should know. Look for Vilma's numbers to improve.

It may be more of a case that Vilma MUST be a good fit, because Mangini already sold the farm on the 3-4. Just a hunch, but the whole things smacks of a coach changing the scheme to fit his knowledge, rather than the skills of the team. "To a hammer evrything is a nail..."

Keep in mind that there were rumblings Man-Genius was attempting to trade him in the 2006 pre-season, but nothing ever materialized. Mangini knows Vilma has value based on his 2005 4-3 performance. If he ever was dealt to a 4-3 team, his value will explode again. I think he will in fact be dealt in the '08 off-season.
