Vince Young will be a better NFL QB than Mike Vick (1 Viewer)

Da Guru

Fair & Balanced
I can get tapes of all the NFL games from a friend of mine. I started watching a couple of Youngs games.

Watching last weeks game with the Giants I was quite impressed with Young as a rookie. First of all being 6-5 he can see the field much better than the 6-0 Vick.

Because of his size a couple of times Young hung in there and completed a pass when Vick would have started to scramble.

Why is that important? Because the WRs were still in their routes, not free-wheeling.

Young seemed to be able to stand tall in the pocket and scan the field.

If you were starting a team and both of these guys were rookies.

Who would you take?

Young is going to be a McNair on 'roids.

He's bigger, faster, stronger; I'd say the only thing he doesn't have that McNair does at this point is experience, heart, and possibly arm strength (I haven't seen him throw it deep a lot, but I suspect he can)

For the last time, they are NOTHING alike aside from the color of their skin.
Beg to differ....they are the best "running QBs" to come out of college and to be drafted that high in the NFL ever. Compare Manning and Palmer because of their styles..compare Vick and Young because of their styles. To see how both adapt to a quite different NFL defenses will be fun to watch.

I honestly think Troy Smith will be better than both of them. Just my opinion though.

Just for the record, I'm not an OSU fan.

Vince Young's running is nothing at all like Michael Vick's. Other running QBs drafted high include McNabb (1.02), Culpepper (1.11), McNair (1.03), and Steve Young (1.01), all of whom are closer to Vince Young in style than Michael Vick is. Young is big, strong, and not particularly fast. His running is like Culpepper's or McNair's; he is aggressive and hard to bring down, but not particularly shifty. Michael Vick is the fastest guy on the field. McNair and Young run like tight ends; Vick runs like a wide receiver. There is really no comparison.

Oh yay - another Vince Young thread - and this one succeeds in putting forth the Young supporters' BIGGEST pet peeve.

McNabb, McNair, and Culpepper ran..but not like Young and Vick.

Culpepper has a 105-carry, 10-TD season to his credit, and two others with more than 89 carries, and has run for over 600 yards in a season. McNabb has two seasons with 80+ carries and also has a 600-yard season. McNair has five seasons over 70 carries, two over 80, one over 100, including a 675-yard season. Vince Young is on pace for 78 carries and 442 yards.

Culpepper had that 106 carry season in his 4th year over a full 16 games. Vince is a rookie that is getting a partial season, admittedly a pretty large chunk but still not a full 16 games as the starting QB. Perhaps a bit of a case of apples and oranges? Let's check back on Vince after year 4.At any rate, anyone that watched Culpepper run and watches Vince run should be able to note a very distinct difference in style. Culpepper was/is a bull, Young is a gazelle. FWIW, I don't expect Vince to outproduce Culpepper in TDs as I doubt that he will be used at the goal line like Culpepper.

Dude, no offense, but I think your analysis of Vince's running is off. Vince is very shifty for a guy his size. I'd say that Vick runs like a fast RB, and Vince runs like a tall WR. This is largely due to the fact that Vince is 5 inches taller and 30 pounds heavier. IMO Vince is a better runner than any of McNabb, Culpepper, McNair or Steve Young, but not as good as Vick. In a full season, Vince will probably get more rushing yards than those guys.

I said this about VY in a post about 3 months ago. His completion % in college was a good indicator of why he would be more successful than Vick.

Agree largely with Colin. They are both black qbs who run very, very well. That's about where the similarities end. I chafe at the Vick comparison. Young reminds me more of Staubach than any other single qb.As for the above quoted post, I think you may be confusing speed and quickness. They are not one and the same. Vick is very fast and very quick. Young is also very fast, just not as quick to get up to top speed. Just watch him pull away from dbs if you don't believe me. He's also shifty as hell...just ask Ernest Shazor. Combine these qualities with his great size, strength, and vision, and he's pretty damn tough to stop. Another thing about him is that he's most dangerous as a runner not on designed qb runs, but on pass plays where everyone is covered or the pocket breaks down. He runs more when he has to than not. Vick is not as selective.

Gil Brandt:

"The difference between Vince Young and Michael Vick is like New York City and Big Sky Montana," Brandt said. "Everybody wants to lump him with Vick. This guy is a passing quarterback first. Vick is a running quarterback first."
Rick Gosselin:
Vince Young is playing the type of quarterback in his fourth month in the NFL that the Atlanta Falcons wish Mike Vick would be playing six years into his career. Young is a discretionary runner. He gives his arm a chance to make plays before he turns to his legs. Young trusts his arm to make throws and win games. Vick doesn't.

Excellent post.Dead on...I would just add that I think Young's vision and size will lead to him enjoying greater durability than the oft-dinged Vick.

I knew the scotsman would show up as soon as the names Vick and Young were mentioned together.

Lets be real..Vick is running at a record pace, and Young has had 200 yard rushing games in college.

They both can run. I can`t compare Vick and Palmer..or Vick and Manning. Those guys are superior passers but can`t run.

It is a natural comparison.

:no:Vince Young and Steve Young are a more natural comparison than VY and Vick. Vick is unique - you are barking up the wrong tree trying to compare ANYone to Vick except maybe Kordell Stewart when Stewart was good.
