2010 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we plan to publish more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Visanthe Shiancoe, TE, Minnesota Vikings

Player Page Link: Visanthe Shiancoe Player Page

Each article will include:

[*]Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member

[*]Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads

[*]FBG Projections

[*]Consensus Member Projections

The Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

[*]Focus commentary on the player (or players) in question, and your expectations for said player (or players)

[*]Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"

[*]Avoid redundancies or :goodposting: ... this should be about incremental analysis or debate

While not a requirement, we strongly encourage you to provide your own projections for the player (players):

Projections should include:

[*]For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Attempts, Rush Yards, Rush TDs

[*]For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

[*]For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

Now let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

The interesting thing to me is the affect Favre seems to have on TEs at times. Like Donald Lee, Shiancoe has caught favre's eye and like Lee, he's definitely benefited from the attention.

Even with all the weapons it's a leg up over other second and third tier guys.

I think he's more talented than Lee by the way - just interesting career trajectory. Like Lee he's on his second team and like Lee, Favre has put him over the top.

This isn't some run of the mill fantasy backup here, and yet he's generating ZERO interest. That screams opportunity to me. Here's a TE that finished 5th in 2008 and 6th in 2009 (with two different QBs throwing him the ball). Yet no one is a believer? Wow. Let's hear why you don't believe, but I don't know of many other guys who are coming off back-to-back Top 6 positions at any position and yet has an ADP outside the Top 10.

My enthusiasm for Shiancoe is tempered by the fact that the primary contributor to his high finishes the last couple of years has been his TD total, which was 11 in 2009. In neither 2008 nor 2009 did he record over 60 receptions or 600 yards. In 2009, he was 13th in TE targets at only 79.While on one hand you can say he is a great red zone target, on the other it is tough to draft him as a top tier TE without matching reception and yardage totals to provide some consistency in your lineup. I believe he is being properly valued in the TE 8 -11 range. As far as projections, IMO the Minnesota passing offense will continue to perform at a high level assuming a healthy Favre is at the helm. But it's hard to see him throwing for more than the 4200 yds he did last year. Favre seems to look for Shiancoe in tough situations and I think this will continue and perhaps even increase slightly with Chester Taylor gone.62 / 646 / 7

I heard recently on one of the Lexy reports that SRice may have a lingering hip problem. Whether just talk or not - should it turn into something huge and effect Rice's time on the field, Shiancoe's value should go through the roof, IMHO.

I'd expect an upgrade to last years #'s considering how well he and Farve clicked and how Farve seemed to look to Visanthe more often as he acclimated to his surrounding cast later in the season

- Fist 8 games of '09' Farve targeted Shiancoe 31 times

- after the bye - last 8 games the targets went up to 48

That's more than a 50% increase in looks... Farve likes this guy. And he's an obvious end-zone threat. Also, having a strong RB threat usually doesn't impact the TE position as much as it does WR...

65-70 rec 650-750 yards 9-13td's (and I think that's the reasonable/conservative side)

Low end TE1 - Very strong TE2... You could afford to take chances at the TE1 position if Shiancoe is your #2...

Winslow/Shiancoe

<or>

Daniels/Shiancoe

Would allow you to virtually ignore the TE position for the first 7-8 rounds
