VY article (1 Viewer)

I quit reading when he asserted that Vince can't throw downfield, which is patently false. Vince Young has plenty of things he will need to work on to be a great pro QB, but arm strength is not one of them.
:goodposting: Thats exactly when I quit reading, its not the long ball that Young is bad at, it's the intermediate routes, he can float it up and prey with the best of them, but he cant fire a ball in there like Favre. He puts way too much air on his passes.
What I saw from VY in college is that he got rid of the ball quickly and was accurate on short routes. Questioning his arm strength is ridiculous, but there are questions about his downfield accuracy. I do think that Chow's spread offense will be great for him and that they stick to him throwing mostly to TE's who can get open most of time. As long as the Titans stick to his strengths and avoid his weaknesses I think he can be a successful QB like Vick - maybe not traditional, but succesful in helping the team win.

:goodposting: Yea, it's pretty silly to see more and more "writers" who obviously never watched a player can actually make up stuff and it gets published.

That's the beauty of being a writer though I guess, you don't have to actually know what you are talking about or write the truth.

isn't that the turth.... just because they put a buch of words together doesn't mean it's going to make sense. no wonder cbs has a bunch of bogus news statements.

I think what the writer may be presuming, and correctly so in my opinion, is that arm strength does not equal downfield throwing ability. It's certainly a component, but there are so many other factors, mentioned in this thread, that come into play. I'm sure there are tons of athletes that can pick up a ball and throw it 6o yards downfield. Unfortunately for them, it takes much more than that to be a successful NFL QB.

And accuracy is not solely determined by completion %. One would need to understand the types of throws he made and against what type of competition. How accurate is he on a downfield throw with disguised and adept coverage on his WR?

If he had Randy Moss jumping over the defender to grab his heaves, maybe it would work, but there aren't very many WR's with Randy Moss's athletic ability.

What a lousy article. Maybe Young won't make it (I think he'll become an average NFL QB in 4 years or so if the organization handles him properly), but it won't be for the reasons this jackdaw has spewed.

The amount of useless noise generated by the sports entertainment industry, solely to justify the phoney baloney

existence of so many untalented uninformed quacks on the payrolls of media companies is obnoxious. Clowns like this guy and the jokers on sports talk radio/sports t.v. network talk shows are the reason I can't take any sports journalism seriously anymore. It stopped being about the sports and all about who can call the most attention to themselves a long time ago, with whoever talks the most, the loudest and the most extreme winning. I just watch the games and listen to the fans (like here at this board), that tells me everything I want to know for the most part.

I miss Chick Hearn.

Multiple reports have declared that Chow and Titans coach Jeff Fisher preferred USC's Matt Leinart over Young. The guy who wanted Young, Titans GM Floyd Reese, is the same knucklehead who picked Jones in 2005. Chow and Fisher probably feel better, too, now that they've acquired veteran mediocrity in Collins. Reports out of Nashville say the Collins signing was a reaction to starter Billy Volek's general inexperience and specific so-so exhibition showings. The Associated Press story went so far as to note that, "The only quarterback not affected by (Collins') signing is Young."
This part of the article must not be overlooked. I remember when this came out, Chow and Fisher wanted to go in a different direction..........nough said.

 My grandmother knows who Vince Young is.

What sports fan, even a casual one, has never seen him play?

One would think this columnist didn't watch any Texas games the last two seasons?! First off, as has been stated, Vince doesn't have any major issues throwing the deep ball, it had always been his intermediate pass accuracy.

Vince made huge strides with that from his Soph season to last season. While he definitely had some improvement to make there (his accuracy improved a lot), I'm sure it didn't hurt that his starting wrs matured from rFrosh to Soph's. Pittman, Sweed and Cosby definitely have talent, but they are JRs NOW, meaning they were starting as Frosh and Soph's during Vince's time at UT.

The columnist seems to insinuate that it was Vince's surrounding talent that made Vince great...when it was really more like Vince making his surrounding talent great. With that being said, its going to take Vince some time to be NFL ready. If Tenn can be patient like they were with McNair and Philly was with McNabb, then Vince can and will be a great one in the NFL. He just won't be ready as quickly as Leinart or Cutler.

I don't understand how someone can come to such a clear conclusion regarding VY's NFL career prior to him even playing one full game?

He could have put together a good piece explaining how difficult VY's college game will be to transition to an NFL game. But no he took the easy way out and just put fluff on fluff.

VY might not amount to anything but I'll wait until I see him start at least one game before I call for his head on a platter.
