Waiver Wire Defense Week 9 (1 Viewer)

Here's what's on my wire this week and it's a better set of matchups on paper than last week.

SD Chargers vs KCC: Another Thursday Night snorefest, Great home matchup against an anemic offense without a QB.

Denver vs Cincinnati: Broncos enter their easy part of their schedule and will be a good long term pickup as well.

Detroit at Jacksonville: any time you can matchup against JAX, it's a safe floor for fantasy points

Miami at Indy: The Phins defense has been on fire lately, and if Moore is the starting QB for Miame expect a low scoring game all around.

Cleveland vs Baltimore: Maybe a desperation start, but Baltimore is not in a good way. Risky in that they are coming off a bye week and maybe ready to make a statement on the road.

Rolling over Detroit from last week, hoping to pick up Denver this week to ride them for the next 4 weeks. Opening up a spot to carry a 2nd defense with an eye towards getting playoff matchups in order

This is a tough week because I see three great options for different reasons. I am considering picking up two of them to hold for the long-term.

San Diego - In my mind, this is the best matchup of the week. The Chiefs have allowed massive points to defenses this season, and it's a Thursday night game (where there have been great defensive scores so far this year). They are not a long-term hold though, because after this week, the matchups are much tougher.

Miami - They have been fantastic and have a decent matchup against the Colts. The Colts haven't given up great points to defensive teams however, so they aren't my favorite choice for just this week. Their remaining schedule however is really good and could be a long-term hold.

Denver - The matchup against Cincy is solid, but not spectacular. They play the up and down Panthers next week, and following that, they have ONE game that concerns me for the remainder of the year against the Ravens in week 15. That's it. The remaining schedule is amazing.

Right now, I am keeping San Diego as a holdover from last week and looking to grab Denver for the long-term. I'd like to have Miami as well though, but I really hate to miss out on the great San Diego matchup this week.

I picked up Denver last week with something similar in mind. I've been using Arizona since week 3, but they have a really ugly stretch the next 3 weeks--GB, bye, ATL. I think Arizona is still worth holding just because of facing STL/NYJ/SEA in weeks 12-14, but Denver has a very nice setup. They haven't been huge scorers but they've been getting some sacks every week and face quite a few turnover-prone QBs.

I think I'm going to roll out Miami once gain vs Indy. That defense is very very underrated. So solid. They rarely let up a ton of points and lately they are coming alive in the turnover and sack department.

I also picked up Denver D last week BC of their upcoming schedule. I thinking o just rolling with Miami and Denver d rest of the way BC they compliment each other with matchups.

I grabbed TBB for their game against Minnesota last week, and will be playing them against Oakland this week.

I think I've decided to let someone else grab the Dolphins defense off of the wire this week. I hate to do it, because they are the #4 average scorer in my league, but they have a number of tough matchups coming, and I think Denver is a unit that I could hang on to for the remainder of the season unless they fall apart like the Cardinals unit has done.

I'll keep the Chargers on my team for this week though, because I think they are the play of the week against the Chiefs.

Detroit was a bust against Sea this week but should be ok for Jax. The big play this week has got to be SD. Thurs against the WORST offense in the league. Should be a solid showing.

Does Denver have any bit of a return game? The one league I'm in gives 1 point per 10 return yards for the D. The Titans are the top D available right now because their return game is getting them so many points even though their D is not good.

Are there teams out there that have known bad kickoff and punt cover squads?

In completely barren waivers, I've been forced to go with the Panthers in 2 leagues...

Even as a Carolina fan, I'm not thrilled about it. I will say that Kuechly's presence in the middle has helped them out tremendously, and the D-line is finally getting pressure on the QB.

Don't feel awesome about the matchup, but RGIII has no receivers to speak of, and I think the Panthers can focus on the run and be middle of the road. In some situations, that's as good as you can do, unfortunately

Picked up Denver off the waiver wire and would start them in most cases, but because I already had the Chargers on my team and an open roster spot, I'm going to roll with them and just hold two defenses on my team for a week.

Sometimes the matchup is just too good to pass up. San Diego is playing at home, on a Thursday, against a team that hasn't lead a game in regulation all season.

With all of that said, I now expect a 45-7 Chiefs win.

Picked up Denver over San Diego, even though SD is the "play of the week". Denver is the long mileage play and I just don't have the roster space to carry both SD & DEN with my Patriots DST on bye. I expect a nice run from Denver, where SD looks more like a one week play.

Picked up zona after week 2 but need to start weeking it again as the cards face Rodgers this week.

Would prefer Miami but they are not available so going back to my drafted D of denver.

Those are the best choices for those of us who rotate D's.

I did the same here. I had picked up SDC in week 8 so no one else would snag them, but then I had to dump them in favor of Denver because of the schedule they have. I also have the Pats on my bench. This is the first year that I am carrying 2 D/St. It has seemed very hard to play the matchups this year. At least for me anyway.

MIA and BAL still available on my wire.

while I'm leaning toward MIA, I'm actually a little torn between the 2.

Also, trying to look at the rest of the year... and both look to have favorable schedules till about the Fantasy Playoff time... :wall:

Been playing AZ since week 3 accross most of my leagues. Playing these two this week.

MIA's closing FF schedule weeks 12-16 has 4 of 5 at HOME, including SEA, JAX, BUF. Weeks 13-14 are poor with NE (H) & @ SF.

I see a lot of people picking up CLE opponents (including the team opposing me this week). Turns out CLE is only 14th in FF points allowed to opposing DSTs and probably more recent weeks have them higher (I'm guessing) vs the beginning of the season when they were having so many troubles.

Anyone just crazy enough to roll out New Orleans vs. Philly at home on MNF if in a real pinch?

4. New Orleans (vs. Philadelphia) – While I normally would never recommend starting a defense that has put up negative points in each of their last two games and three times on the season; the Eagles are in a downward spiral, so get while the getting is good. If you’re in a deep league with limited options, the sneaky play of the year just might be against the Eagles in the Superdome on Monday night.

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner could be fired if the Chargers fail to beat the Kansas City Chiefs in their Week 9 game Thursday, Nov. 1. per KFFL
More reason to like the Chargers tonight. I'll be rooting hard for a Charger win. Save the Norv!

Bah, conflict of interests for me. I'm rolling with SD in two leagues but would love to see Norv fired. Hmph.

That same guy called my Panthers play "getting too cute." Which it very well may be, but I don't trust an historically bad defense playing a cornered opponent.I'm stuck with the Panthers, though the Raiders on my wire are marginally interesting. Just seen Tampa light some teams up lately, which is concerning to me. I think the Panthers can at least keep the score low, but sacks and TOs drive a lot of FF production at DST.

Any thoughts?

Both the CLE and BAL D scare me a little this week. Too hard to predict.

In reputation and W-L, BAL seems like a good choice despite their depleted body count. On the road against a division opponent seems likely to be a low-scoring, hard-hitting slugfest no matter what the difference in record.

But despite their records, CLE actually ranks higher in both Run defense (24th to 30th) and on par in Pass defense (25th to 24th). To be clear, both team's relative rankings suck, which to me may mean that these teams may actually put some yards and points on the board.

They have the personnel to do it on the ground, and some weapons in the receiving corps that could do well if the respective QBs get enough time in the pocket.

Cleveland has been known to stay with similarly defensive-challenged opponents -- they put up 27 and 34 vs the Bengals, and 27 against the Giants in the Meadowlands. Ravens put up 121 points in their first four games, and 31 against the Cowboys in a victory.

In WK4, Ravens outclassed the Browns 23-16, not exactly a low scoring game, but not a barn-burner either. I think in their second meeting, knowing more tendencies and weaknesses, it's just as feasible this becomes more of an aggressively offensive game than one where the Ds lock down.

I think if you have the option, SD is the perfect 1-week bye filler, and Denver a much safer longer range play than BAL given personnel and juicy matchup. I'm avoiding both BAL and CLE this week.

Detroit is looking like an excellent play especially now that Mike Thomas just got traded to them from Jax. Anytime you have a guy who has been playing in the other team's system all year ready to gameplan for them on defense, it's not going to be pretty. Jax isn't good to begin with but when you know what they will do, this could be a huge day for Det D/ST.

I just picked up Denver with the idea of playing them out. Considered Miami as well.

Had my heart set on Denver Def vs Cin....been holding Minn & Arz for weeks... playing match up... but when SD Def became avail, I grabbed them too.... wanted to think about it before submitting.... got sick, went to bed, woke up too late to pick SD!

DANG! 2 Def TD's already!

I sure hope Denver works out as well..... though I think I missed the golden opportunity!

Woo! Glad I held onto San Diego for one more week. I usually have terrible Thursday night fantasy results, so it's nice to be happy for once.

Grabbed them in one league, didn't want to waste the Waiver spot in another. Should have claimed them.

You all don't look ahead more than the current week?

I picked up SD 3 weeks ago, specifically for this matchup vs KC.

This was much more than I hoped for. The reason I liked San Diego this week was because I thought it would be a low scoring game with maybe a turnover or two. I knew they sucked at getting sacks.

27 points in my league, which is the 5th highest score of the season.
