Wake me when the Ice Buckets stop (2 Viewers)

So what if some people are just posting the videos for attention? That happens all the time without awareness being raised to fight a disease. If you or someone you loved had this there wouldn't be a single video that annoyed you. It blows my mind that someone could be perturbed enough about the videos that they would state their annoyance publicly. This is on par with booing an amateur act on the Jerry Lewis telethon. If someone in the public eye came out and said these videos were annoying they would be torn apart and rightfully so. A lack of perspective and empathy.
:goodposting:

Do you guys complain about pron stars cause they're "doing it for attention"? No, because that's for a good cause as well.

Are you sure you're angry enough about this?
Promise you I'm not.
That's a lot of ####s given for someone trying to prove he doesn't give a ####.
Never said I didn't care. Just said I wasn't angry. This place used to be smart.
Three sentences so far removed from reality, not even worth crafting a response refuting them.

You were more fun when you could take even one-tenth of what you dish out.

For 48 I think she's kinda hot.
And she's like winning the lottery kind of lucky with the slow progression. I figured she would be able to move her legs but she can - she probably can't walk but the fact that she can move as much as she did and talk and clearly as she did after being diagnosed so long ago is a miracle.
Good for her for sure. Glad she's made it to see her boys grow up. Went to their site and see they have a walk next month. Would have to think it'll be a big one. Oh, and she was (is) a pretty woman. ;)
OK, that was special. God bless 'er.

My sweet little three year old niece nominated me, so now I have to do it. :oldunsure:

She did it with her three sisters (oldest is 7) and in posting the video my sister pledged $1 for every Facebook like. Seems like a good way to do it, assuming it doesn't go viral or something.

Know a girl who's been railing about the drought in Cali...so when she did her challenge, she dumped dirt on her head and then chastised everyone for wasting water.

She then proceeded to go take a shower shortly afterward.

My girlfriend did this too. Only she stood on her head and used an old paint bucket filled with other dudes' wangs.

Donations were plentiful.

You're so so mad about the ice. Did you post yours yet?

Nearly my whole facebook feed right now is either bros icing themselves or sharing videos of other bros icing themselves, some famous, some not.

I guess what is particularly annoying and dorky is the people doing this are doing it for vanity, and to be joiners, not because they ever gave a crap about ALS, not because they're super generous. They're just starved for attention and inclusion.

Yes, look at you. With your bucket. And the ice. Finally the excuse I always wanted to post a video to Facebook!!!
We just recently founded a pediatric cancer charity (501©(3) application pending) and are busy planning fundraising efforts on various fronts. In terms of development and fundraising, if you aren't figuring out ways to tap into things like "vanity" and "joining" you aren't doing your job. That's why charities recognize people and corporate sponsors as "diamond-level" in gala programs, or why they put their names on a plaque in the facility, or hold banquets in their honor. Sure, there will be people who give simply because they believe in the mission, or because they have been particularly affected by what the charity aims to address. Others will give because they want their name out in the community, because they want to be known as charitable and philanthropic. Still others will give because it's good for business. These are all valid reasons to give, and every charity should know and understand this. In the end, our mission is to help children with cancer and their families, and it serves that mission to understand what motivates people to give.
Totally different thing in my viewit sounds like a wonderful cause and organization and I wish you well with it.
Your view is pretty wrong. I'm on the board of a pretty big charity here in town and we spend a lot of time talking about how we can differentiate ourselves through things like this. There are thousands of organizations out there that deserve your charitable dollars. The ones that are going to get them are the ones that make giving to their particular cause socially preferable to the others, which is exactly what this is doing.BB - I'm sure you have lots of people smarter and more versed in this stuff than I am, but if you ever need anything I would be happy to try to help.
Thanks man! We're definitely in brainstorming mode.

My new annoyance with the Ice Bucket Challenge: People who keep posting a link to a celebrity doing it with the title saying something like "______ just did the greatest IBC so far" or "Shut it down. _______ wins the IBC." Half of them are no different than any other one.
Have you seen the comments of the Ben Affleck one? Makes me want to puke. If it was 2 "regular" people nobody would care. But since it's Ben and Jennifer you get quotes like "OMG! You two just blessed my soul! The obvious love you have for each other and the joy of the child's laughter and the importance of family is beautiful!".

:X

bigbottom - your PM box is full. Can you drop me a message re: your charity once you get yours cleared out a bit? Thanks.

[Otis] Pretty convenient that this thing took off during the summer. [/Otis]

I've now seen tdoss, biggie and GM all do it. All three are hot, wet and sexy.

Amazing. The whole thing is amazing, but especially struck by the ALSA press release from two days ago reporting $22.9MM. They jumped to $41.8MM in two days.

A hyper-defensive troll is the worst kind. Sad to watch.

So when do the copycats start?
During the winter/spring a bunch of friends in MN and WI were jumping in frozen lakes for cancer research. That was probably a little too hard core for most, plus regional obviously. I assume this campaign is a take-off from that though.

So, I expect there will be more.

Was the cinematographer for one this morning. The challengee was standing poolside, dumped a bag of ice into a cooler full of water, lifted the bucket, then tossed the ice water into the pool and belly-flopped in right behind it.

Was tempted to tell him I didn't get all of the splash just to make him do it all again.

A 16-year-old boy from Minnesota has died after taking part in the "Cold Water Challenge." Officials say Davis Colley went for a swim at Eagle Lake, Baylor Park on the night of May 9 when he drowned.

I'm going to start the "knife throwing challenge" to help people injured by the ice bucket challenge.

Benefiting population control research

My problem with this challenge (and Livestrong bracelets and Komen red ribbons) is that I don't think the success of a charitable endeavor should be dependent on its branding. Because I think that leads to organizations like the Komen foundation putting more resources into the brand and less into the actual charitable endeavor in the first place. Now, I get that charities exist in competitive markets like everything else. I understand that United Way has been defined by their commercials and The Salvation Army by their buckets. But every once in a while something comes along that makes me think we've lost the balance.

Komen is a great example of how too much funding can cloud the vision of a charity.

There can be such a thing as too much money all in one spot.

Not to hijack, but it's not an issue of too much money ... it's an issue of where the money is allocated. Komen focuses a lot on early stage treatment and those unfortunate ones who get to stage 4 cancer, Komen really has no answer for them.

Komen needs to focus more on the cause of cancer, and prevention. Only 5% of funds are dedicated to discovering why women get breast cancer. Makes no sense.

ETA: Branding for charity is what needs to be done. I am participate in Pelotonia, a bike ride that has raised almost 80 mil in just 6 years for cancer research. The brand here is amazing. And without it, the event and $$$ would not be where it's at today. There are so many issues competing for our attention.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! We will be doing a fundraising drive immediately following the launch event - will get you the info then.

I wanted to send this via PM but your inbox is full.

Hi Biggie - do you have a PayPal account for your new charity? I'd like to send you guys a donation.
