wannabee Strategy Thread (6 Viewers)

Hi Jeff,

I incredibly made it to the championship games in both my leagues thanks to facing Brees on his off-week and some astute calls on your part. My matchups don't look nearly as good this week.

Pick 1 Defense (no special teams scoring):

ARI (vs. STL): high risk/reward D against NFL's whipping boy

DAL (@WAS): picked up Dallas after their dismantling of NO and WAS's dismantling on MNF

Pick 1 RB (other is MJD):

Charles (@CIN)

Wells (vs. STL)

I can also pick up Pierre Thomas (vs. TB) on waivers but I really am unsure about NO's RBBC

Pick 1 WR (other is AJ):

Welker (vs. JAC)

Meachem (vs. TB)

Also, a general question: how much do you anticipate Indy resting its starters? It would be a long rest until the divisional round (3 weeks) but I already see sites downgrading Indy players in their projections this week.

Thanks a lot! You've saved me from some bad decisions all year.

Well, i made it to the championship game and i appreciate

all the help throughout the season.

My first question is this. What is your feeling on the Indy situation? I have

Dallas Clark and feel he is always a must start, but will he play enough to produce?

I also have J. Finley.

RB questions: 1PPR, 1pt/10yds rush/rec, 6pts/td's

Which 2 do you like?

Gore vs DET(must start?)

Rice @ PITT(he's been a must start, do you still agree with this for this matchup?)

SJAX @ ARI(he's battling a bad back)

Rodgers vs. SEA or Schaub @ MIA? I feel Rodgers is a must start. Do you agree?

Thanks.

This week, I do not trust the Colts. They are acting all too secretive for my liking. I would go with Finley. He has been hot, playing great. At RB, I love Gore. For the other RB, I would lean slightly toward Rice. Pitt defense has not been great. SJax has been playing well, but Rice has been playing better and Pitt has not been strong vs run. It is a close one for me. At QB, I would go with Rodgers. Have to dance with who brought you this far. You have a good team. Good luck this week.

I like AZ. I usually like home teams and the Ram passers turn the ball over.

Pick 1 RB (other is MJD):

Charles (@CIN)

Wells (vs. STL)

I can also pick up Pierre Thomas (vs. TB) on waivers but I really am unsure about NO's RBBC

This is a tough one for me. I think Wells has a chance to put up a big game, but Charles has been on fire. He has scored in several weeks in a row. With Charles, you have the chance for a couple big plays.

Pick 1 WR (other is AJ):

Welker (vs. JAC)

Meachem (vs. TB)

I would go with Welker. I think he is a solid play every week. I know Meachem has a shot to have a big game. Lance Moore is back. The lack of a NE passing game the past few weeks is a concern. But, I would go with the best player .. that is Welker.

Also, a general question: how much do you anticipate Indy resting its starters? It would be a long rest until the divisional round (3 weeks) but I already see sites downgrading Indy players in their projections this week.

Thank you for the kind words. I try my best and actually remember the bad picks. On the Colts, I do not trust them to play all their players enough to be solid starts. Good luck this week.

Hey Jeff thanks to some of your insight, im in the superbowl now after starting 0-4.

Couple of questions.

Would u start LT or Mendy?

@ def would u statr cin vs KC or Atl vs Buff?

Thanks!

definitely Cincy of those two. While I think the Bengals could be in for a letdown after the past week, they are a better play than ATL. At RB, I think I would go with LT. Balt will be fired up with the playoffs on the line. Good luck this week. Congrats on making it to the Super Bowl.

I'm guessing you figure Wayne's not going to get enough targets to be worthwhile? My other options are basically any of NYG's WRs (vs. CAR)--I have Steve Smith of NYG, and WW pickups like Wallace (vs. BAL), Chambers (@CIN), Roy Williams (@WAS), Louis Murphy (@CLE), Josh Morgan (vs. DET). Most of those have okay matchups but inconsistent targets. Who, if any, is a good replacement for Wayne?

Made it to the SB and only two choices left to make:

#3 WR between (PPR):

S. Moss v DAL

Morgan v DET

Collie v NYJ

Bess v HOU

Kinda like Morgan here???

DEF:

ARI v STL

NYJ v INDY

Leaning ARI

Thanks for the 2nd opinions over the last couple weeks.

Wayne has two things working against him. Revis will guard him, and is stellar. I expect the Colts to pull their starters part way through. I would go with one of the NYG, prob Smith w/ Nicks injury

had high hopes for this team, but am wondering if a pseudo re-build is in order. It's Zealots (53-man roster, IDP start QB, 2-3 RB, 3-4 WR, 1-2 TE 1 Flex, 2-3 DL, 3 LB, 2-3 DB, 1 IDP Flex)

This team looks OK at first, but if you look deeper, well......Also, I'm not going to list all 53 guys when I have players like Matt Flynn and Mike Teel at QB6/7

QB: P Manning, Cutler, Edwards: Good shape here, but now is probably the last chance to get top-3 QB value for Peyton. Will be 34 with nothing to prove. Cutler hasn't exactly boosted his dynasty outlook with his first year in Chicago.

RB: Forte, MBIII, Jacobs, R Williams, Buckhalter: IMO, 2009 is the norm for Forte not 2008 (which isn't good) - he's not a true FF RB1. MBIII has looked like the 3rd best RB at times for Dallas and I'm afraid of him moving into a short-yardage situation player. Jacobs is the same story (almost exactly) as MBIII, but worse. Ricky is just plain old, but was great for my team this year and likely not going to fetch much since he's retiring after 2010. Buckhalter is nothing more than a handcuff going forward for Moreno (whom I don't have).

WR: DeSean Jackson, Sims-Walker, Houshmanzadeh, Manningham, DHB, Camarillo, Robiskie: I was real weak at WR for a long time and got lucky with Sims-Walker (who I've had since his rookie season and believed in) and traded for Jackson. I like those 2 guys, but Houshmanzadeh is washed up and last year was the year to trade him for good value. I look to have whiffed on my draft pick of DHB and Camarillo is one of those guys that will always be roster-worth but never start. Robiskie could develop, but I don't have high hopes. I should have traded Manningham mid-season, a WR unwilling to run proper routes is a WR on the bench (especially the way Nicks has played).

TE: Shiancoe, Shockey: 2 good TEs, both up in there in age, neither studs. Traded Keller away as part of deal to get DeSean Jackson.

Not as interested in IDP stuff, but will list them below - my IDP is OK, not great, but it's easier to build this up IMO than the offensive side

DL: Cole, Mathis, W Smith, K Williams, T Kelly, M Johnson: 3 studs, in good shape here

LB: Ryans, Dansby, Greenway, Urlacher: Need some help here, should have tried HARDER to trade Urlacher last year. I hope I'm right in being patient with DeMeco Ryans because he didn't look like an LB1 this year.

DB: Polamalu, Betha, Griffin, Marshall: pretty easy to play the waiver wire, even in Zealots, for DBs

This year I finished 9-4, made the playoffs and lost in the first round. The last 2 years I was 6-7 and 7-6 and missed the playoffs (so I have gotten better each year and have made a lot of moves)

Option 1: Hope to make a push again next year and that I'm wrong on some of these (especially the RBs)

Option 2: Rebuild: Trade Peyton while I can, try to move my RBs for maybe a stud RB and draft picks, hold onto Jackson and Sims-Walker but look to re-build at WR (wouldn't trade guys like DHB since a slight possibility of him learning to catch is better than a 4th round pick - about all he's worth right now, considering what I invested in him).

You have quite a few good players. To me, I think the answer lies in between. The two players I would look to move are Jacobs and Houshmandzadeh. Moving these two would not effect your chances much for the future, and gives you a chance to add upside to your team. I would also look to move Ricky if the opportunity arises. You have some good pieces so I would not blow the team up. I would just make these small changes and try to get younger with some high ceiling guys.

Wow, that was quick - thanks for the response. Next question will be what I can get in return, but I'll save that for another day. Thanks again,

Since it is a Zealots league, Jacobs will still retain plenty of value. I would use he and Houshy in a 2-for-1 deal to upgrade either RB or WR and get a young starter you like. The only way I would move PManning is if I got a good young QB (Ben, Rivers, etc) and a 1st or very good starter. Some teams are needing the stud QB and have bench depth to spare.

As the championship game, a loss is 2nd and still big money...but I want a win so bad after losing last year in the closest championship we've ever had.

That being said (like you care lol)

Is it going to be a lot safer for me to play Jason Snelling at flex against the Bills, with Turner out, or to play Jerome Harriosn, my man, the guy I've been pimping as a playoff stud for 4 weeks now, who delivered big for me last week.

I just am worried that every time a Browns guy has a huge game, he doesn't get the ball the next week. And 286 is gigantic, so maybe Mangini must go with him, but I can see this nightmare scenario of a first play fumble and a Kubiakesque benching.

Am I just overthinking it?

I do not think your are reaching in the thought. I think I would go with Harrison and swing for the fence. Both have a great matchup, but would take the guy with higher upside. The concern on Harrison for me is that Anderson is the QB, not Quinn. I worry that Anderson will try to air it out versus the conservative gameplan the Browns had last week. Quinn has less than 70 pass yards last week. Congrats on making it this far. I am glad you made it to the title game (like the few others that post in this thread). Good luck this week.

Jeff

Well, I want to start by saying thanks for all the advice this year. I am in the championship game this week, thanks in part to you. My questions are this...

PPR league...

1) WR dilemma. I have a no-brainer in Andre Johnson, but am debating between all my other so-so WR's Dwayne Bowe, Hakeem Nicks, Santana Moss, Steve Breaston, and Sims-Walker. Bowe got a lot of targets and was a little rusty, but his QB is so-so at best. Nicks has been playing good, but I thought he got hurt last week - have you heard anything? Sims-Walker is streaky and playing against NE. I'm leaning toward Nicks and Bowe or Sims-Walker. I keep debating this over and over and each time I come up with 2 different starters.

2) Defense.. Who to start 49ers or Colts? I'm leaning toward the 49ers, with the lowly Lions visiting, but every time I pick a Defense that is playing a terrible team, that terrible team has a good week.

3) If I can get Michael Bush (OAK) off waivers is he a better in a PPR league than Chester Taylor?

Thanks again for everything and good luck.

Hey Scott, congrats to making it to the Championship game. Thanks for the kind words. I am happy to help. 1 I like MSW only because the Jags need a win and may be playing from behind. I do not trust Bowe yet. I know there is risk sitting him, but he caught four of his 10 targets. I like Nicks if he is not too limited by the hammy injury. Breaston would be my choice if Nicks is out or severely limited. 2. I would go with the Colts as long as it is not obvious they will pull their starters too early. They score well most weeks. 3. Bush is playable if Fargas is out again with injury. Good luck this week.

Hey Jeff, thanks for the good advice last week. I made it to the finals in 1 of my 2 leagues. In the other missed out by 1.8 points(if Chris Johnson or Sidney Rice didn't fumble I would have won)

Anyways PPR league, who to start?

QB- One from Romo, V. Young

RB- Two from Chris Johnson, J. Charles, J. Forsett(think I know the answer here. Lost R. Brown and L. Washington to injury this year)

WR- Three from R. Moss, V. Jackson, D. Bowe, D. Bess, H. Nicks, M. Manningham

TE- Heap or K. Boss

DEF- PHI or TENN

Thanks

Stinks losing because of a fumble. Congrats on the one win. Good luck this week. I think I would go with Romo. Eli lit up the Skins and SD has a good secondary. At RB, start your two best (Johnson and Charles). At WR, I would start Moss and VJax. Bowe vs Nicks is a tougher one. I think i would go with Nicks if he is healthy enough. Has been limited by a hammy injury. Boss has looked good of late. Not a fan of Heap much. At defense, I would go with Philly. Better matchup and they have DeSean Jackson returning kicks. Once again, good luck this week.

I think I would stay the way it is. There is a fear the way the Jags play on the road. They are not the best in the cold. If you feel iffy with them, go with Snelling.

I will be around tonight. But for those checking in, have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. And, the best of luck for all in the games this weekend.

Merry Christmas Jeff!

Final question before I take the BIG leap and possibly sit Peyton Manning at home this week!

I know the Jets D is tough and I am well aware and concerned about playing time for Peyton....but I do think they want to go for the perfect season and he did get me this far so its a tough, tough decision to make.....

Both Alex Smith and Vince Young are on the WW. I have Matt Ryan but I dont think he is going to play.

I am planning on dropping him for one of the other two guys.

Smith should bounce back with a couple TDs this week vs DET

Young has a tougher job with the Chargers plus I expect Chris Johnson to have a BIG game with TDs this week!

I am leaning towards Smith because I will also be starting Chris Johnson and I don't want to play 2 Titans vs SD.

So, I drop Ryan, pick up Smith.........do I sit Peyton????

Sorry, or the obviously tough question but I need your advice buddy!

Thanks again!

I hope you have a Merry Christmas. I think I would go with Smith also. He is a safer option.

Merry Christmas

I have a lineup question in Week 1 of my 2 week championship game. It's standard scoring, no PPR. Have a WR/Flex issue.

Currently my two RBs & flex are MJD, Benson, Maroney. That leaves me with 2 WRs. One of those is easily Greg Jennings. The last spot is up for grabs between the following players:

T.O.

Manningham

Austin Collie

Braylon Edwards

Thoughts?

Sorry to bug again, but I have one more ?

0.1 pt per yd rush/pass/rec

10 pt per TD rush/rec

5 pts per TD pass

ETA: non-PPR

Start QB, 2RB,2WR,1TE

Have Fred Davis. Could pick up Finley. My opponent has Rodgers. Should I pick up and play Finley or ride the lightning of Davis?

that is close, I think I would go with Finley. He has led the Packers in targets the past few weeks.

Merry ChristmasI have a lineup question in Week 1 of my 2 week championship game. It's standard scoring, no PPR. Have a WR/Flex issue.Currently my two RBs & flex are MJD, Benson, Maroney. That leaves me with 2 WRs. One of those is easily Greg Jennings. The last spot is up for grabs between the following players:T.O.ManninghamAustin CollieBraylon EdwardsThoughts?
I might be the only one promoting him, but I would go with Collie. Garcon is nicked up. Revis will be playing Wayne. Seems as though Collie could have a decent game.

That was my thought, I just wasn't sure what was going on with the Colts starters for this game.

Jeff

I have a follow up question... PPR league, trying to decide on my RB2

I have Chester Taylor, Jerious Norwood, and Michael Bush (oak). (I know - I know) A few days ago they were all ranked about the same, now its Norwood>Bush>Taylor. I was going to start Taylor, but now am thinkning about it again. Fargas looks doubtful and that makes me think that even is Bush shares 50% of the carries and maybe a reception or two, that will be a much less risky gamble than Taylor, who has been only a 3rd down back, and as of late, is getting less and less points week by week. Norwood perplexes me as he is banged up lately and I feel like he will get less than 50% of the workload, but with Turner likely getting shut down will Snelling get the lions share?

Assuming Fargas and Turner are not active, who do I start? I am thinkning Bush...

This is a 16 team PPR Dynasty League. I was offered the 1.07 pick in the rookie draft for Kevin Smith and Reggie Bush. My roster is posted below. I also already have pick 1.05. Smith has undergone successful surgery on his ACL, but his starting role will be in jeopardy for next season. The Lions might bring in a back to compete through free agency or the draft. Reggie Bush is injury ridden and inconsistent. His role as a receiver out of the backfield gives him more value as it's PPR. With that said, here's my lineup.

QB Philip Rivers

RB Jonathan Stewart

RB Maurice Morris

Flex Santana Moss

WR Randy Moss

WR Michael Crabtree

TE Jason Witten

DEF Texans

K Tynes

Bench Donnie Avery

Bench Reggie Bush

Bench Jared Cook

Bench Mike Thomas

Bench James Jones

Bench Deon Butler

Bench Chaz Schilens

IR Kevin Smith

Thanks :goodposting:

I would go with Bush w/ great matchup. Good luck. Always dicey trying to guess what the Raiders should do.

I do not love either RB, but together they are easily worth more than that pick. Bush, if healthy, is worth that himself in PPR. In 16 team leagues, I value proven players (esp QB and RB) more than picks just because it is an uphill struggle to find good starters. I really do not think this is close and I have written over the past few weeks as both RBs are "sells". I just think they are worth more.

Between SJax and Wells. I think I would go with Wells. The Cardinals should be up and running the ball.

Hartley. I guess you have to go with him now since Kaeding kicked last night. I like Hartley more anyway.

This is a tough one. I think I like Philly more even though most like Cincy. I just prefer to use the more talented def, plus you get DeSean Jackson on returns if your league scores special teams scores. I like the Philly def best. They get good pressure and will be all over Orton.

Good luck this week.

If you haven't gone to sleep, if so, thanks anyways! Trying for my 3rd Championship, 12 team league

Defense: 6 pts = Fumble or INT returned for Touchdown (bonus 4 pts if 50 yds or over)

2pts = Safety

1pt = Each sack, INT, or fumble recovery

10pts = 0 points allowed

6pts = 2-5 points allowed

3pts = 6-9 points allowed

-3pts = 30-39 points allowed

-6pts = 40 or more points allowed

Receiving: 6 pts = Touchdown receiving (bonus 4 pts if 50 yds or over)

1 pt = Receiving a 2 point conversion

1 pt = For every 10 yards over 60 yards receiving (ex. 120 yds is 6 pts)

3 pts = 6 receptions

4 pts = 8 receptions

5 pts = 10 receptions

DEF: Sea or TB (each has a bullseye, but i have to play one)

WR: Marshall, Owens, Bryant, Housh, Nicks....playing Marshall, just need 1 out of the other 4

Thank you!

Tough choices all around. On the defenses, I would go with SEA. I expect NO to be mad after getting beat by DAL. At least with SEA, you can hope for bad weather in GB. At WR, I like Nicks if he starts. I assume he will, but has lingering hammy issues. He gives you the best chance at a big game. Bryant is nicked up. Owens and Houshy have not played well of late. I like Nicks best of those. Good luck going for the three-peat.

Happy holidays, Jeff!

My TE position has been weak all season, as I've ridden Olsen for way too long. I probably need some production to win this week, so I'm looking at the WW for someone worthwhile.

Standard scoring, pick 1:

Olsen (vs. MIN): MIN has been kind of generous to TEs, so this might be the one game in five I get production from Olsen

Carlson (@SEA): almost as inconsistent as Olsen

Thomas (vs. TB): assuming Shockey is out

Heap (@PIT)

Keller (@IND)

Scheffler (@PHI)

Thanks!
