Warner out, Leinart in (1 Viewer)

Wait, I thought Warner was going to lead this team to the playoffs? Arizona was everyone's dark horse playoff team this year (again)!!
 The local media has the Cardinals booked for the Super Bowl every year. Of course, that lasts about 3-4 games. They'll win a game around week 8 or 9, then the hype meter jacks up for playoff possibilities, but then it's squashed for good a couple weeks later.Next year the hype will totally suck, because they'll be the host stadium for SB 42. It may last all the way to week 5.

Time for me to come clean. I touted Warner as a sleeper QB with top 5 upside. I based this on what I observed in games he played last year when he was healthy. With the WR's he has and the addition of James and what I thought was an upgrade at TE, I felt he would remind people of the old days.

I was wrong. Plain and simple, I was wrong. It is time for him to hang them up. He had a nice career considering he was bagging groceries before his fortunes changed. Used to be a time he was putting things in a sack. Now he is the sack.

I do support the choice, but watching Coach Green up there saying "this is not an emotional decision, I had plenty of time to think about it while I sat on the sideline watching us loose badly...." is a joke. 4 days ago he was protecting Kurt and saying he's still the best QB on the roster.

Making that announcement 4 mins after getting a butt kicking on the road against the Falcons makes Dennis come across very willy nilly.

that actually does sound like a joke, literally.

This is what I don't get, really. Green won with anybody he threw behind center up in Minnesota. Can anybody recount the illustrious list? Sure seems to be having his problems finding "the guy" down in the desert.

Did he really say "loose"? The news didn't show the post-game, they just reported that Leinart was in.

With most cheatsheets having Fitz and Boldin in the top 7 or so, it only made sense that virtually everyone figured Warner to have a good year. Personnally, I sought to get him in multiple leagues, but waited too long or wouldn't pay enough in any of em :D

Cardinals | Leinart will start Week 5

Sun, 1 Oct 2006 18:16:04 -0700

The Associated Press reports Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green announced rookie QB Matt Leinart will start the Week 5 game against the Kansas City Chiefs. QB Kurt Warner said, "I'm going to do whatever I can to help him. Maybe he can turn things around. Obviously, I was disappointed and frustrated. I wasn't making enough plays to help us win."

While in minny, every one of his linemen made the pro bowl at some point. You know about the WRs and Robert Smith. Makes it almost seem easy for the QB I bet

Maybe I'm just dense, buuuut.....

Question: If Josh friggin' McCown could still make Fitz and Boldin productive, why on God's earth won't Leinart?

Baby with the bath water, folks. Fitz and Boldin should be fine, overall. Maybe a bit of a hit, especially the first couple weeks with Leinart under center, but it's not like they're going to fall into a vacuum. They play for a team that is likely to be behind a lot and will be forced to throw. Someone has to catch those throws, ergo......

Warner's the one that loses here. I don't see the wideouts going THAT far down in production. It's not as if Warner was setting the world on fire, outside of week one, anyway. For real football, yeah, it probably isn't good news for the Cards, as Leinart will be learning on the job. For fantasy though.....I don't see a big difference. Warner wasn't performing anyway, so if Leinart doesn't either what's changed? Even if Denny plays the quarterback shuffle, as he did this week, those two WRs will still be the ones getting thrown to. A slight downgrade? Potentially, yes. "Worth nothing"? Hardly.

Personally, I'm thinking of targeting Boldin/Fitz in my league on the off chance that one of their owners are in panic mode with the rookie QB being installed.

Hope you're right. I usually don't panic but it's week 4. I can only wait until week 6 or 7 before I need to makes moves in anticipation of the second season.

:goodposting: The honeymoon will be rough with KC and CHI up next...but I expect he'll put up solid numbers when OAK and GB follow after that. Leinart should at least be more of a moving target than Warner was behind center.

This is Green's fault and OC's fault.

Cards need to get in max protect, 2 TE sets. Lining up 3 wides is a huge mistake. Boldin, Fitz, TE, Edge out on routes is plenty, and enough even if you keep the TE into block. They need to keep Leinart upright or he's going to have the same problem.

Blocking with 5 or 6 guys when 7 guys are flying at your QB...it's piss poor. :wall:

So...is Warner dropable at this point?
Unless Green is in danger of losing his job, I think he has to stick with Leinhart even if he struggles. Like San Fransisco did with Smith last year. They arent going to win many games with either QB now but the future gets brighter sooner by playing Leinhart.

:goodposting: Especially with an immobile QB like Warner..

This is getting to be outright ridiculous. Also, how underrated is Jake Plummer? I mean, not only did he make the playoffs with the Cardinals... he actually won a playoff game! I'd put winning a playoff game in Arizona about on par with winning three superbowls in New England. :lmao:

Dennis Green? Willy nilly? Never!I asked Josh McCown, Shawn King, and John Navarre, and they all agreed that Denny's the LAST guy to pull the quick-trigger routine with his QBs.

How you can turn any thread into a Bronco comment/discussion is ......odd

Really? I didn't mention the Broncos once. :whistle:Seriously, though, it's true. That franchise is like Cleveland- it's positively CURSED. Look at guys like Jake Plummer, Simeon Rice, Garrison Hearst- guys who are high draft picks for Arizona, but who look positively mediocre there... but the second they get out of town, their numbers go through the roof. I'm becoming more and more convinced that, outside of David Boston, nobody has ever performed anywhere near as well in Arizona as they have everywhere else.It makes you appreciate what that 1998 Arizona squad managed to accomplish even more, and it makes you really wonder just how ridiculous Fitzgerald and Boldin might be if you got them out of Football Purgatory. ;)

Cardinals HC Green Names QB Leinart Week 5 Starter

Darren Urban, East Valley Tribune - [Full Article]

Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green said during his Week 4 post-game news conference that rookie quarterback Matt Leinart would start for the team in Week 5 ahead of quarterback Kurt Warner. “Matt Leinart is our quarterback,” Green said. “Period.”

Don't forget Thomas Jones

Personally, I was suprised to see Green go back on his decision last week. I know Lienert is being thrown to the wolves, but Kurt just doesn't have it anymore. He turns the ball over constantly...the four turnovers last week lost them a game, and he went right back out and did it this weekend. He did it with the Giants, he did it with the Rams. NY decided to let Eli learn...and that worked out for them in a year. The Cards have to be thinkin the same thing. We aren't going to win the Super Bowl this year, so lets see what Matt can do and start getting him experience so maybe next year they can compete.

This oughta' be fun for KC fans this week. We have only played in AZ twice ever, so there isnt much history between KC and the Cardinals since they moved to AZ.

I would watch out for Edge this week more than anything. KC has been stout, but they still aren't dominant in Rush D.

That's just slightly simplistic. The most valid point (though overstated) is the O-line was consistently good (but no, not "every" one of the lineman made the pro-bowl, he did have a few longstanding pro-bowl players that helped, ie Zimmerman, McDaniel, etc). That I think was the key, because between RB and QB, they were plug and play. The #1 WR spot was consitently held by excellent players starting from Anthony Carter, to Cris Carter, to Randy Moss in Green's tenure. However, the QB's and RBs were:92: 11-5 Rich Gannon/Sean Salisbury with Terry Allen93: 9-7 Jim McMahon/Sean Salisbury with leading rusher Scottie Grahm (Robert Smith a rookie)94: 10-6 Warren Moon with Terry Allen95: 8-8 Warren Moon and Robert Smith (limited by injury)96: 9-7 Warren Moon/Brad Johnon and Robert Smith (limited by injury)97: 9-7 Brad Johnson and Robert Smith98: 15-1 Randal Cunningham and Robert Smith99: 10-6 Cunningham/Jeff George and Robert Smith00: 11-5 Culpepper and Robert Smith01: 5-10 Culpepper and Michael BennettThe QB names seem big, but most were taken as castoffs from previous teams, and Denny Green got production out of them.

Leinert vs. KC's defense ---- they haven't allowed a TD since week 1!Poor guy might get killed.....
Warner fumbled 10 times in 4 games... Can't recall how mobile Matt is, because Warner has been sacked 12 times, and lord knows how many hits, knockdowns, and hurries.KC then CHI... ouch. That o-line is awful, and they did nothing in the offseason to remedy it.at OAK (not as bad a pass d as you think) and at GB....then a BYEMight be good/easy to sit back, let someone else try for him, then grab him after they give up or the dust settles from KC/CHI and he is on the wire.
