Luis Gonzalez was one of the slowest players in the league.

The obvious move seemed to be playing at double-play depth.

That little crappy squibber pop-up Gonzalez hit would have been caught had Jeter been playing in position for the double-play.

Rivera never has been a big double play type of pitcher. Many of the balls that are hit against him that stay in the infield are the slow little dribblers that take forever to get to. So while I disagreed with a lot of what Torre did over the years, I couldn't fault him for pulling the infield in with the World Series-winning run on 3B.That said, McCarver did make a comment about the type of hit Gonzo got right before it happened. So there were cases to be made each way. Then again, the 9th inning of Game 7 never happened!

This has always annoyed me and Torre's dismissal of the question after the game was equally grating. It was push button managing and not really thinking, especially with a diminished Jay Bell on 3rd. You have a force at home, if its a bleeder on the IF, you're probably not getting him anyway. You're only hope in hell there is to play for some sort of twin kill.

I don't know what would have happened in the 10th, could the Unit and Mo keep going? But I would have liked to have found out. Torre gets a total pass on this bit of minutaue and in a blathering book, this got nary a mention.
