Week 1: I'm benching Tony Romo in favor of... (1 Viewer)

My rule of thumb- never ever sit your elite QB, no matter who they're playing. I think there are decent reasons, at times, to sit your elite RB- if the other teams run defense is excellent, and it appears the game might get away from a running game, then it makes good sense. For instance, if I owned Ray Rice I would probably sit him today.

But you can't apply this to QBs, for one reason: no matter how poorly Romo plays today, so long as he stays healthy, he's going to continue to get the ball. That means that even if the offense doesn't move for the first 3 quarters, there may be a whole lot of cheap fantasy points in the 4th quarter. So he hasn't a healthy offensive line? So what, it only means he may end up passing more. I believe that its completely unpredictable how he will perform, in terms of fantasy numbers. I am starting Romo today because I will start him every game he starts this season.

While I have Cutler as an option, Romo will be my starter, as he will be, all season. I'm of the, "don't overthink this" crowd. As for Rice, you must not be in a PPR league. I start him as well.

These week 1 benchings I see going on here are out of hope in many cases as opposed to just playing your studs. I've found out a long time ago that being "cute" with my lineup backfires more times that it works.

Agreed about Rice in PPR leagues. He's a start this week. If anything for the reason you mentioned about Romo getting cheap points. I think if Pitt is ahead late in the game you will see Rice get a lot of dump off receptions.

Finally made my decision, and I'm going with Romo. Sanchez will be sitting on my bench. Also starting Felix Jones. I woke up this morning to the odd feeling that the Cowboys are going to put up some points.
I'm still debating this one as well. I have Romo and Sanchez. Kinda depends on how my opponent is doing come game time.
Yep, that's that tack I mentioned earlier in the thread, and the one I will be using. Will bump this thread later this aft. and check in with those making similar Romo/Sanchez decisions. I think this is the one situation where debate over whether to sit Romo is fairly valid.FWIW, in other leagues, I am starting Romo over Eli and Cutler.

So I have a decision between Romo and Sanchez. Down 34 points, other dude has Dez (ugh). I got BMarsh tomorrow night. Leaning Romo here and hope he doesn't throw to Dez.

I'm down by 23 points with 4 still to play (Romo, Lloyd, Bush and Gronk) to his K. I think I'm going to stick with Romo's floor and play it safe. If I was down by 15+ with only Romo or Sanchez to play, I would likely have leaned on Sanchez for his potential higher ceiling.

We'll see how it turns out...

Sure am glad I read this thread for entertainment purposes only.
More than just entertainment if you had Stafford and Romo and played Stafford due to this thread. This thread was a perfect example of how the Shark Pool can be useful. Plenty of opinions that were mostly backed up by reason. Ultimately, it's each owner's decision to do what they wanted to do, and this thread brought a lot of good discussion both pro and con on Romo. For me, I'm very happy I both talked the talk (recommended Stafford over Romo) and walked the walk (played Stafford over Romo in my league). I'm up several points on the exchange. I know I easily could have been wrong, and that will happen soon enough. It's the nature of fantasy football. But these hindsight gloating posts are pretty tiresome after awhile. I know they are not going away, but it would be nice if they weren't so ubiquitous.

My backup is Roethlisberger. I made the right choice with Romo. There were others in here that had the same choice and probably chose incorrectly.Darn that Witten and his weak stiff arm.

I should add, I would have been tempted to play Ryan or Roethlisberger over Romo, and in that case if I had benched Romo I would have been wrong. I doubt many people had that choice, and I didn't get into that possibility much at all, but I alluded to the possibility in one of my posts. So I don't get to pat myself on the back either. Still, why don't we encourage as many viewpoints as possible and rigorously challenge them (rather than ridicule them) when they appear to be off base? Doesn't that serve our purpose better than when we try to pound our chests?

I think Romo is a sleeper this week. Tyron Smith has been practing and will play RT, freeing up Witten from increased pass blocking assisnments. I agree that the Jets are likely to put up points (Not seeing 38 as you predict), so doesnt that help Romo's numbers if the Boys are getting smoked?

I see Dallas having success with an underneath passing game:

Witten short over the middle and up the seams.

Felix on swings and in the flat.

Bubble and WR screens.

The Jets despite having good CB's gave up a fair amount of points aagainst the pass.

Cowboys are loaded (Witten/Dez/Austin)in the passing game. Who gets sigle coverage.

I can easily see Dallas scoring 21-27 points in the game.

Prediction Jets 27-24

Romo

280 and 2 TDs
342 and 2 scores. Nailed the score.

agreed. shark pool is useful if you just follow the lead of a select few, namely, "the jerk." will be searching for your posts in the future and following their assertions religuously. great community, lol at those who dont accept it and profit.

Good job. I'm happy with it having Romo as my number 1 this year--those are some good numbers against one helluva defense. I sat him for Cutler, and in our scoring system Cutler actually outscored him by a couple points so that worked this week--I don't expect to do it often. Just hope he's not made of glass; seems like there's always problems.
