Week 2 Notable Injury Analysis (1 Viewer)

I did some research last year on the injury report and wrote a freelance article that should be published shortly. In the meantime, let's look at some data from the article and try to use it as guidance for what may happen this year. Keep in mind that this will not take into account any news or quotes from the coach on whether a player will play or not and that the sample sizes are quite small in most cases. But the information may still be able to help us.

CAR WR Steve Smith Questionable Thigh

I had thought it was a hamstring, but the injury report says Thigh.

Player: Steve Smith was not in last year's dataset (ie. fantasy starters listed on the injury report as D, Q, or P)

Overall: 50.4% of 254 Questionable Players played last year

Division: It is not a Division game

Week: 41.7% of 12 Questionable players played in week 2 last year

Position: 51.2% of 86 Questionable WRs played last year

Team: The Panthers listed 4 fantasy starters as Questionable last year and 3 played.

Injury: 2 of 2 players with a Questionable Thigh Injury played last year (AGates and EKinney).

ATL WR Roddy White Probable Hamstring

Player: Roddy White was Probable with a Hip in week 11 against the same Tampa Bay Bucs and played well, scoring 6.8 above his average per game output.

Overall: 89.7% of 272 Probable Players played last year

Division: In Division games, 90.6% of 106 Probable players played

Week: 100% of 12 Probable players played in week 2 last year

Position: 83.1% of 83 Probable WRs played last year; this is the LOWEST of any position for Probable

Team: Atlanta played 3 of 4 Probable players last year

Injury: 15 out of 18 players with a Probable Hamstring played last year; 8 of those 15 were WRs

OAK QB Aaron Brooks Probable Knee

Player: Aaron Brooks was not in the dataset last year

Overall: 89.7% of 272 Probable Players played last year

Division: It is not a Division game

Week: 100% of 12 Probable players played in week 2 last year

Position: 52 out of 53 Probable QBs played last season; lone exception was MVick in week 5 and he was downgraded during the weekend

Team: Oakland played all 11 Probable players last year

Injury: 88.7% of 62 Probable Knee injuries played last season

BAL TE Todd Heap Questionable Back

Player: Todd Heap was listed on the injury report 8 times last year, all as Probable, and played every time, including week 6 with a Back injury.

Overall: 50.4% of 254 Questionable Players played last year

Division: It is not a Division game

Week: 41.7% of 12 Questionable players played in week 2 last year

Position: Only 19 of 46 Questionable TEs played last year, the LOWEST by far of all Questionable positions

Team: BAL only played 1 of 4 Questionable Players last season

Injury: 71.4% of 14 players with a Questionable Back injury played last year, among the highest by injury

I'll try to post some more of these later. Keep in mind that nothing beats watching the pregame shows Sunday and getting information from insiders like Mort. But if you have to set your lineup early, this may help.

Is this the type of thing that is interesting to people or would you rather just read the article and look at the dataset yourself?

Good information. However, I still think you have to look at each injury/player/circumstance on an individual basis. Historical data probably has a lower correlation in this than in most data sets.

Yeah, that was my basic conclusion in the article. Still some interesting data at the Team level to show how some coaches use the injury report and I also compared the injured player's fantasy stats to his per game average for the year.
