Welker and Jennings (1 Viewer)

Does it seem like the Pats and Packers are already adjusting their offenses for the loss of Welker and Jennings in 2013?

We all knew about the TEs in NE, but didn't anticipate 9 catches for Cobb. The punt return was just icing on the cake.

Its one game.

9ers did a great job taking away the outside WRs so Rodgers went inside to Cobb and Finley quite a bit.

Notice Nelson did not do much either...were they preparing to be without him too?

Welker had a big drop yesterday and a big drop in the superbowl. Yesterday was an indication of how the 2012 Patriots Offense will be. Throw intermediate to Gronk and Hernandez, take shots deep with Lloyd, and run the ball with a lead. Welker will be a big fantasy bust this year.

I think Welker is well on his way from a slow start to finishing 100/1000+

Just gotta build up some momentum

It was one game and with the Pats Welker could get 12 targets next week. To me and the way I read the situation, I thought that Welker would be the one to suffer the most for a couple reasons and thought Lloyd would have a good role in the offense. It'll be interesting to watch how things play out.

With Jennings, I wouldn't be as concerned. He didn't play most of the preseason and they likely faced the best defense they'll face all year in week 1. Things didn't change in his offense like they did in NE and I'd give him a mulligan this week.

I think for the Patriots, yes, this is a sign of things to come. The presence of the running game, if it continues, will likely scale back passing attempts to in terms of "we don't need Welker to run a 4 yard slant cause we can actually run for 4 yards now."

Not sure of the Packers because I look at it on one level and say that the Packers were willing to take all that short stuff inside yesterday but then, the way they spread it around, maybe next week is different (and not every team can play like the Niners did). In short, so many variables to say. But I did ask a week or so ago when Jennings announced he likely wouldn't be back if anyone thought it might mean that Rodgers mentally moves on from him and if it might affect him and the majority of responces I got in that thread was that most people thought it would not have an affect.

For Jennings, I noticed that he primarily played out of the slot yesterday and rarely lined up on the outside. I owned Jennings in the past and he lined up primarily on the outside from all the games I watched. Is this a new position for him or was this just part of the game plan against the stingy niners defense?

Packers homers?

I noticed this as well especially early. They typically went 3 wide with Jones and Nelson outside and Jennings exclusively in the slot. Then things drastically switched to being the Randall Cobb show.

I doubt the Pats defense and run game will be consistently as good as they were yesterday. Welker will still get a lot of targets.

The main difference last year in Week 1 was Brady heaved it up 48 times to only 31 times yesterday. Lloyd had 8 targets yesterday compared to 9 for Branch on Opening Day in 2011. I think there will be enough targets to go around if the Pats get their attempts up some.

Any updates on what caused Jennings to take himself out of the final 3 plays of the game? I didn't notice it in real time, but I have since read about it in several places in regards to those being the only 3 snaps of the day for Donald Driver yesterday.

Wanted to bump this for the Packers homers regarding Jennings and his use primarily in the slot yesterday. Is that going to be his position in 3 WR sets going forward?

Yup, if they play the 49ers all year.Pump the breaks fellas. Unless every team has a secondary like the 49ers, Nelson and Jennings are still going to close in on 1,000 yards with relative ease.I have Cobb and will only be starting him when the Packers play the Bears and the Giants, because those games will feature juicy matchups for the 3rd/4th WR. Otherwise I fully expect the main two guys to be dominant. Even when Jennings/Nelson were blanketed they still had five catches apiece.Rodgers took 7-8 shots downfield and none were completed. Yea, the 49ers are good, but usually you'd get at least one of those.

Jennings never announces that he likely would not be back.He announced the possibility that he would not be...given his contract is up and all.

He has always moved all around. He plays in the slot some to try and get matched on different guys...different coverages.Watch that SB tape against the Steelers...that big 3rd down reception was out of the slot...the TD up the seam was from the slot. I think even his corner route TD was out of the slot.
