Went to Jets camp today (1 Viewer)

Today I went to Jets camp at the Meadowlands with my friend and there was some interesting things there. The team was in uppers and there was minimal contact; it definitely wasnt one of their more grueling practices. Brooks Bollinger and Kellen Clemens got the majority of the snaps in the team drills. Bollinger overthrew some passes but looked pretty good. He started off poorly but he got his act together after he compiled some reps. Kellen Clemens looked slightly better than Bollinger today, but he locked onto his targets too much. Later on in practice defensive backs began to really get him on this and broke up some of his passes as a result. He had some zip on his passes and he looked pretty accurate. Neither looked great, though, and both quarterbacks participated in a 44 second drill for a field goal and both failed (though Clemens did better, and Bollinger had a snap go over his head). In some of the individual drills Pennington really seemed to lack zip on his passes. Receivers had to often come back to the ball and it seemed a lot of passes werent thrown hard enough. Ramsey didnt get any reps this practice with the team session but I think Mangini is rotating his quarterbacks a lot.

Tim Dwight dropped a punt (and was thoroughly booed by the Jets fans there) but he probably will get the job anyway because he has the most talent. He lined up at #2 receiver and he made some catches up the middle. He looks as fast as ever. If McCareins cant get his act together Dwight may be a nice pickup.

Coles looked pretty good, he made a nice catch and put some moves on the secondary in a team session.

Nugent looked great, the only kick he missed was a 60 yarder. He should have a good season.

Leon Washington made a nice play on a screen pass and I think he will get some playing time. He has good hands and would make a good third down back. With such a ragtag bunch of runningbacks (and the questionable health of Curtis Martin) Washington would make a nice pick in a keeper league and he very well may be the Jets back of the future. His frame is pretty big for someone at 5'8.

I dont think the Jets will be that good at all this year, and they probably will have a very high draft pick like last year. But they do have some great young players to build around and with a coach like Mangini (he really is focusing on discipline, if a player made a penalty, dropped a punt, or made any other miscue they had to run a lap) I really think they will make some noise in the near future. I'm really going to try to steer clear of most of their offensive players this year (running backs who will split a lot of carries, shaky quarterback situation and adequate receivers) but they have some interesting keeper possibilities in Leon Washington and Kellen Clemens. The team seems to be very high on Clemens and he will be the quarterback of the future.

Curious as to whether any Jets fans think Bollinger has a chance to make the team? Watching him at Wisconsin, I do not have a lot of faith in him although he can take off and run occasionaly. I find it hard to believe that Bollinger or Sorgi have a job in the NFL.

I don't really see any way he makes the team. In fact, I have never bought into the hype of this being a 4 man QB competition. I think it is a 2 horse race with penny and Ramsey. Clemens should get some time later, but I doubt he gets the nod to start the season over two vets with starting experience.

While not a Jets fan, my friend is, and we both think Bollinger will be the one quarterback who doesnt make the team out of the four. I didnt think he was that great out of Wisconsin either, and while he can run, he had trouble throwing on the run. He made some nice short passes but he overthrew the longer ones. I dont think hes going to make the team, and I think most Jets fans would want him the odd man out at the quarterback position. From the plays they run, it doesnt look like the Jets will shoot downfield much (the one throw over 30 yards was a last effort bomb into tons of traffic in the last play of the 44 second drill by Clemens) and that may give Pennington the upper hand.

I don't see how the Jets can be considering starting him when his arm is still this weak and/or erratic.

Nugent is going to have a good "fantasy" season?
If the offense can get into scoring position, yes. I think he at least will be consistent in making his kicks, and he has some range. The big concern with him is how many kicks he will get with the Jets offense.

I know trades are hard to pull off in the NFL, especially at this time during the pre-season, but I really think that the Jets would upgrade their running game with a trade for Chris Brown.

I've been to four sessions.... this one in Jersey was a PR move.

As far as the QB's go.... Pennington has actually had more zip and accuracy on his long ball so far.... the 40 to 45 yard pass. It's the shorter routes he's had some trouble with. What I wonder is, knowing he won't get hit, is he stepping into the long throws, but lacking arm strength for the quick release shorter stuff?

I think it's a possibility that the Jets could keep 4 QB's. Ramsey is still quite shaky, and Liebo, did you notice how Ramsey is always off and away from the other 3 QB's? ( I read that this -seperation- has continued). Pennigton has gotten hurt in contact.... that HAS to remain a concern. If he goes down again, they will need the other three QB's.

The kicking game is the least of the Jet's worries.... Nugent will be fine, and I'll say it again.... if Graham continues his TC kicking, he will not only break the punting records, he will shatter them. Nugent hit a 57 yarder the other day.

I'm not real worried about the D.... it's shaping up, but the offense looks like it could be very bad, especially in the first half of the season. Houston is my dark horse here.... Washigton is the future 3rd down RB and a COP RB. I remain very unimpressed by Blaylock.

Well, no. K's with good fantasy seasons most often come from teams that score a lot. The Jets aren't likely to be one of those teams.

Don't base your beliefs on one practice. So far, word out of Jets camp is that Pennington's arm is stronger than last season, and he's been accurate.

Noting the word erratic, not strength, I get the same feeling in reading about Chad. I'm assuming he's gotta work some rust off. I mean you can pretty much pick any article and it includes "good arm strength" and "threw some ducks".

Any word on Blaylock ?
Houston got a lot of reps yesterday, but I think hes rotating reps at running back too. Blaylock didnt get many reps in the team drills at all. Im not trying to base my whole idea of the Jets on one practice, (it was kind of a PR move too to get Jets fans in Meadowlands and introduce the team) but its just something to keep in mind when reading other reports of Jets camps on the internet. Not that much can be taken from a practice when some players didnt get the reps theyve gotten before due to rotation.

Jets | Pennington looks sharp in scrimmage

Published Mon Aug 7 1:22:00 a.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) Associated Press reports New York Jets QB Chad Pennington (shoulder) went 12-of-14 for 117 yards during the team's scrimmage Sunday, Aug. 6. He showed poise and accuracy during the scrimmage while working with the first-team offense. He continues to have the edge at winning the team's starting quarterback job.

How's Justin (Smith, make that) Miller looking?

He's shown as the starter at left corner and he remains as one of the best as a KO Returner. He'll get picked on at corner and get a ton of KO Returns so he's got value in leagues that reward KO Return yardage.

Justin Smith doesn't play for the Jets. A kid by the name of Justin Miller does. He is in a battle for playing time with Andre Dyson, Drew Coleman (who just suffered a knee injury that could be quite serious) David Barret (last year's starter) and Derrick Strait. Miller will likely share kickoff return duties with Tim Dwight.
