Westbrook has fractured ribs! (1 Viewer)

he is prolly sore as hell today, but i think the main thing to remember is, HE CAME BACK AND PLAYED AFTER THE RIB INJURY.

Westy will play this week. i sure hope he does, cause injuries are killing me!

travis henry is a different story--the guy was probably jacked up on 8balls of coke. he could have played with a broken leg
Are you being sarcastic?... because he actually did play w/ a broken leg (fractured fibula actually).... played damn well too... 150 yards or so if I'm not mistaken.

No wonder women were lined up to get a bit of that sperm. That's some hardass genetic code right there . . .

Markets hammered - Westbrook fractured ribs - this is just a great Monday so far.
eh, it was just a hedge fund sell off, lots of money waiting to get in when it stabilized. Lots of buy programs kicked in when the market dropped 800 too.. it will probably drop again, but the volume on S&P was high, so maybe, maybe not.

WESTBROOK TALKS ABOUT RIB INJURY

Brian Westbrook played most of Sunday's loss against the Washington Redskins with two fractured ribs, Eagles coach Andy Reid revealed at his news conference this morning.

Reid did not guarantee that his star running back would be able to play Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.

"We'll just have to see," the coach said. "We'll see how things go here the next few days. He's sore."

Westbrook said on his 950 ESPN radio show tonight that he had trouble sleeping and was in extreme pain Sunday night, but he did not rule out playing Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.

"It's kind of similar to the ankle," Westbrook said. "It's kind of wait and see. You rehab it. You continue to try to do everything you can to get yourself ready. You go to practice. You watch the tape. You understand your plays. At the end of the day, you have to try to get a feel for what it's going to feel like.

"Can you stand that pain and be effective? Are you going to be out there at 45 percent and not being able to take a hit? No, I would rather have Correll Buckhalter ... take over and carry this team. I'm optimistic about it, but at the same time I'm realistic about it."

And the reality is that it's difficult to play with two fractured ribs.

"Everything you do, it affects you," Westbrook said. "You turn right, you turn left, you try to make a move and that's part of my game trying to make people miss. You get hit on the right, you feel it. You get hit on the left, you feel it. It definitely limits the things you are able to do."

Reid said the injury occurred on the Eagles' eighth offensive play of the game, but he was mistaken. The injury, in fact, occurred two plays before that when Westbrook ran through a hole on the left side for five yards. He was tackled low on the play by Redskins safety LaRon Landry, then hit from behind by safety Chris Horton as he went to the ground.

When Westbrook got up at the end of the play, he could be seen touching his rib area. The Eagles' star running back gritted his teeth as he returned to the huddle, then touched his rib area one more time.

The next play was a reverse to Reggie Brown and Westbrook did not have any contact on the play, but he left the field afterward and was replaced by Buckhalter for one play.

Westbrook did return for the remainder of the series and, in fact, made a great block on an 8-yard run by DeSean Jackson on the first play he was back on the field. Westbrook finished the first series with a 9-yard run for a touchdown. Immediately after the drive, however, Westbrook removed his jersey and pads and the teams doctors and training staff started working on his chest.

He missed some of the Eagles' second offensive series, going into the locker room for a pain-killer injection, then returned and played the remainder of the game. He carried the ball three times for 13 yards and caught one pass for 17 yards before the injury. After the injury, he ran nine times for 20 yards and caught five passes for 34 yards. That means he averaged 7.5 yards per touch before the injury and just 3.9 yards afterward.

"Everybody talks about how that pain shot numbs it ... but it doesn't," Westbrook said. "Every hit, you feel it. Every time you run and turn, you feel it."

This is not the first time that Westbrook has had fractured ribs. He also fractured his ribs in Week 7 of the 2004 season in a game against the Cleveland Browns, then missed the following week's game against the Baltimore Ravens. Westbrook returned from a strained right ankle in Sunday's loss to Washinigton after missing the previous game against the Chicago Bears.

"I think this time it's a little bit less pain," Westbrook said. "I'm on some medication to try to mask the pain. Hopefully, that pain is tolerable enough that I'll be able to play with it. Maybe the pain pills have gotten stronger over the last few years."

Most rib fractures are minor injuries, but they're also extremely painful. The basic treatment of one involves managing the pain and monitoring for more serious injuries. Of course, you should also get to a doctor as soon as possible.

Do not administer narcotics, such as codeine for pain. These may interfere with the injured person's ability to breathe.

Encourage the injured person to cough frequently. It's going to hurt, but it will prevent secretions from pooling in the lung, which could cause pneumonia

What is a fractured rib?

A rib fracture is a crack or break in one of the bones of the rib cage. A break in the thick tissue (cartilage) that connects the ribs to the breastbone may also be called a fractured rib, even if the bone itself is not broken.

The most common cause of a fractured rib is a direct blow to the chest, often from a car accident or a fall.

But most fractured ribs are treated at home and will heal on their own over time. Home treatment will help you manage the pain while you heal. Pain relief can help you feel better and let you take deeper breaths.

A fractured rib usually takes at least 6 weeks to heal.

while watching the monday night game the ticker across the bottom of the screen said westbrook says he should play this week against the 49ers. Dont shoot the messenger

Tirico just said that Westbrook "plans to play next week"
Eagles | Westbrook says he will be game-time decisionMon, 6 Oct 2008 17:17:31 -0700Les Bowen, of the Philadelphia Daily News, reports Philadelphia Eagles RB Brian Westbrook (ankle, ribs) said on his radio show Monday, Oct. 6, that so far the injury is less painful than the one that caused him to miss a week in 2004. He indicated his participation for Week 6 will be a game-time decision.

Donovan McNabb played an entire game on a broken ankle in 2002. It was actually one of the best games of his entire career. Doesn't mean they still didn't shut him down to let him heal up after that (that was the season when they gave the ball to Koy Detmer, and he got hurt in the very next game, leading to the A.J. Feeley show that resulted in Miami overpaying so badly to acquire his services).

Just an opinion but his best bet is to take the next two weeks off. All it takes is a blast to that area and he will be down and out again. No flak jacket is going to stop it because the main issue is breathing. The abs are attached to the ribs so every time he turns left or right, every time he lifts one leg or the other to run those ribs are getting pulled by the muscles of the abs. It is torque and it hurts like hell. No wonder the guy cannot sleep.

I cracked a rib playing football once - it was probably the most pain I have ever been in. It really sucks if you have a cold, too, and are constantly sneezing ... ugh, not fun. I don't know how the guy played with that kind of injury, personally

Similar story... laying down at night, there really is no restful position and getting out of bed required rolling out onto my knees. A deep breath or any sort of movement is accompanied by sharp pain.

Last year, I came thisclose to breaking my ribs, and the pain was excruciating. Like others have said, sleeping was the worst, as any movement at all hurt like hell, and I had to roll out of bed every morning. That was a hellish three weeks. And from the sound of things, it would have worse had I actually broken them, as opposed to merely bruising the hell out of them.

Cracked ribs really suck but it can be one of those how much can you take it type injuries. It hurts to breath, and that can be a problem when you are sucking wind.

I've heard of this breathing thing before.. I know they're elite athletes, but how in the world are some able to play with it?

Mon, Oct 13 RB Brian Westbrook missed Sunday's game with fractured ribs. The Eagles are hopeful he'll be able to play in their next game in two weeks after the bye.
