ATL - SI.com Reports Sources Say Vick Knew About Dog Fighting
Source: Don Banks, SI.com
According to Sports Illustrated's Don Banks, SI.com talked to multiple sources who have known Vick well for years, and they say his troubling pattern of recent behavior reflects a penchant for questionable judgment, an unwillingness to distance himself from the wrong crowd, and a long-standing belief that the rules don't apply to him.
While the sources spoke on the condition that their names not be used due to their relationship with Vick, two of them said they were convinced the quarterback has been involved with the illegal dog-fighting ring that authorities believe they discovered last month while conducting a drug raid on a house Vick owns in Smithfield, Va. Authorities found nearly 70 dogs and various items associated with dog fighting. Vick has maintained that a cousin lives at the house and that he was unaware pit bulls were being kept on the premises.
"He knows what's going on in that house in Virginia,'' one source said. "There's not a doubt in my mind he's involved with it.'' The other source cited Vick's longtime "affinity'' for the dog-fighting subculture, and expressed certainty that Vick was aware of what was happening at the house.

There have been reports that owner Arthur Blank is "in denial" and that Vick will receive special treatment. Blank adamantly denies that.
"There's no coddling going on here,'' Blank said. "Whatever is 180 degrees from that, that's the reality. The [financial] investment we've made in him has nothing to do with the way we treat him. When Michael has done something wrong that has been documented, we've had very direct conversations with him. We don't have all the facts of the [dog fighting] investigation, but obviously the story's not developing well. Which is one of the reasons why I asked the commissioner to speak to Michael about the situation and to be as stern as he felt he needed to be.''
We are in a new day and age with Commissioner Roger Goodell and player discipline. We don't have much of a track record to go on but what we have shows him to be more than willing to hand down harsh penalties. If Vick is found to be involved in the dog fighting, it's absolutely conceivable that he would face discipline from the league.
Here's how it looks to me on May 10th. My gut feel is that it's not going to be difficult to pin Michael Vick to the dog fighting. It's an undgerground type activity but it's not that secretive. There are plenty of people involved in it and when push comes to shove, I don't think it's going to be very difficult to produce viable evidence that Vick was aware of what was going on.
If that happens, the league suddenly has a pretty ugly public relations issue on it's hand. Animal Cruelty is serious business and for many people, is a more serious issue than some of the issues guys like Adam Jones and Chris Henry have been penalized for. I'm not saying run out and trade Mike Vick from your Dynasty team for Jeff Garcia but I'm starting to get more than worried. If you made me put a gut feel guess on it right now (and understand it's just a gut feel guess) I'd say there's a 50% chance that Vick misses from one to four games due to this.
