What do you do with teams taking a dive? (1 Viewer)

How do you handle teams taking a dive?

The guy doing it has admitted to tanking the past 2 weeks and plans to wk 13. I feel it compromises the integrity of the league.

Options i've come up with so far are to just let it go, boot him after this season, go to randomizing draft positions, or do the opposite of what we have been doing, best record picks first and so on.

It's a shame, 1st time someone has been obviously tanking games in 7 yrs of the league.

Have playoffs for draft picks, then there is no reason for tanking. I can't think of any other real reason someone would tank unless it was for a better draft pick.

I think you need to change the rules for draft position first and foremost - your rules invite this kind of thing, you've just been fortunate that noone's admitted to taking advantage of it yet. All my leagues use a random draft position generation mode.

if it is not in your rules than there is nothing you can do. Add it to next years rules and kick anyone out that does it.

We had this happen a few years ago. New rule the next year, all of the teams who did not make the playoffs pick their draft position based on the best finish of the non-playoff team going first to worst team going last. This prevents anyone from tanking and affecting the teams vying for a playoff spot.

Heres one......

What would you guys do if you had a team tank the last week, just to stay in a certain playoff position. For instance..... right now, if you were sitting at the #6 seed ready to play #3 team in the first round who in fact has just lost McNabb, BUT if you win in week 13 you may move up to say the #5 seed and face a tougher team in the #4 seeded?!?!?! In other words, the #3 seeded club is clearly weaker due to injuries, how would you handle that situation?!?!

Teams that don't make the playoffs continue to submit a lineup during the league playoffs... The non-playoff team that has the highest combined score during the league playoffs will have the #1 pick next year... The second highest picks #2 and so on...

We base our draft order on potential points - i.e., how many points a team would have scored with their best possible lineup. Benching your studs gains you nothing with this approach.

The above was suggested in the pinned thread about rules every league should consider. A couple of my league have already voted to adopt this starting next year.

not sure about this one. you tank to play a weaker team in the playoffs <_<

yes basically..... right now you are #6 seed, which would face the #3 seed if we started today. We have 1 more week of play and the way the scheduling is set up you VERY well can get a win in week 13 and with that win, while not 100% sure but with a VERY good chance due to points scored and other tie breakers you would win, thus would move your team up to the #5 seed! Of course #5 would play #4. Overall due to a injuries (Mcnabb, R.Brown) #3 team who is locked in at #3 is weaker than the #4 team!! Obviously the #3 team is the team you would rather face in round 1, would you tank the last week to help solidify your playoff seeding to play the "weaker" team? Hope that makes sense.....

My league has 2 solutions to this:

1) The super bowl winner gets first pick of draft spot the next year, then all the teams in order down to the worst choose their spot. Worst team gets the last available draft position.

2) we have a rule prohibiting throwing games, or starting known injured/bye week players. The commish will override & set the lineup if a team tries to tank, regardless of reason. Plus the team gets fined $$.

We have an easy solution:

The team that comes in last place gets his name / logo changed for the upcoming season by the team that has the best record.

As you can imagine, the names get pretty downright nasty.

Why would you base picks for a redraft next year or where teams finish this year? Isn't the point of a redraft to start fresh each year? Just draw numbers out of a hat for the pick slots.

Edit: And anyone who deliberately tanks games ruins the integrity of the league. Don't invite that guy back, rules or no rules.

I have the priveledge to tank this week, and I'm taking it.

Top 3 in each division make the playoffs. I'm in first at 10-2, and I face a 9-3 division rival. The third place team in our division will end up 6-7. If I end up tied in record with my division rival, I end up in first place anyway because I have the tiebreakers. First place=week 14 bye.

So, I know that no matter if I win or not, I end up in first, my opponent ends up in second. The only thing to play for is a shot at a record # of wins for my league, and I don't care about it.

Instead, I'm dumping players I know I won't need in weeks 15 and 16--especially 2 DSTs that I've been carrying just in case, even though they have great week 13 and 14 matchups (I was saving them in case I needed to win either of those weeks). I have a third DST with great matchups in the playoffs and there's no need for depth there, whereas I could really, really use another WR and QB right now.

So, I'm taking a dive this week. Week 13 is meaningless except for a shot at a league record, week 14 I know I'll have a bye, so I'm positioning myself with the best possible roster for weeks 15 and 16.

Build a time machine and set up your leagues rules to specifically address this... as about 100,000 threads here will tell you to do.
