What do you not like about Darius Heyward-Bey (1 Viewer)

according to this his hands problem is more a concentration issue and has nothing to do with his hands.
That's usually the case with most people with cases of the drops. Hand eye coordination, catches with the body instead of hands, lacks focus, bad routes. A greater issue with DHB - unlike cases like Braylon Edwards and Limas Sweed - are his ball skills aren't too good either.

The negative thread about Heyward-Bey I will create threads about a few of the players in the 2009 draft. Why should I not draft this guy in my dynasty rookie draft?
Because when I hear 'DHB' I think of performance enhancing drugs. If anyone's name sounds like a performance enhancing drug, they're bound for trouble.I also avoid all players named richard - you know...
That's very helpful, thanks.
Well, I don't know too much about him as a player, except that if you want him to catch the ball, you need to drill it into his facemask so it sticks there. He's got horrible eye hand coordination, and runs sloppy routes. I am impressed he accomplished what he did in college, despite constant double coverage, but that it more a testimony to his otherworldly speed than having WR skills. I fully expect him to be a failure as a WR1, as he's more fit to be a WR3.So, since I figured everyone else would post that boring stuff, I'd just try to be funny. Sorry the joke didn't work for you...
Actually I thought it was funny.
Sorry, I guess I was

Out of curiosity, where do you find your scouting info?

My eyes and throughout the season(s). I don't subscribe anywhere, but I have excel files that store every relevant thing I read throughout football seasons, started doing this in 2007 after my second season in dynasty leagues. DHB's been talked about since pre 2007 so I had a lot of eye tests and commentary in which to evaluate him. 2007 was a bit rough, but I began to fine tune the process a bit last year, this season should be even more streamlined.

My main concern is JaMarcus Russell.

While 3 consecutive drops by DHB at one point during the recent minicamp seemed to overshadow what was otherwise a very encouraging performance (he was noted by many reporters as showing very good hands and technique overall), what was very discouraging was Russell's performance.

JR was noted as being very erratic with his throws all camp long. This year will be the true testing ground for JR as he can no longer claim inexperience as an excuse. If he is a true bust, then forget about DHB for a while as this franchise will be set back at least 2-3 more years.

How bad would Russell have to be in preseason for Garcia to start? As for DHB himself, I watched just about every game he played at MD and I still have a hard time evaluating him. The QB play was horrid for the Terps for his entire career, so it's hard for me to buy 100% into the "bad route runner/bad hands" line of thinking. He did seem undisciplined at times in running his routes, but his MD QBs were so innacurate it's tough to say where the fault really was.

That being said, I'm a bit leery of him all the same but some of that could be leftover bad vibes from Vernon Davis.

:lmao: I'm very confident in Bay's abilities. I'd wager a pretty penny the guy makes a few pro-bowls and ends up being worth the selection the Raiders used on him.

That he is a ####:

Halfway through Wednesday's two-hour workout, Darrius Heyward-Bey, the team's No. 1 draft pick, pulled up lame during a no-defense passing drill and hobbled to the locker room. Appeared to be a hammy.

Hey-Bey, remember, tweaked a hamstring the second day of the May 8-10 minicamp and became a spectator. The Raiders will have a hard time running a vertical passing game with a horizontal wideout.

DHB: Drops His Balls is at it again.

Raiders WR Injury Update --

Mon Aug 3, 2009 --from FFMastermind.com

The San Francisco Chronicle reports Raiders WR Javon Walker had what looked like an impressive workout off to the side with a team trainer. He's finishing up rehab from April knee surgery and, to the untrained eye, looked good to go for training camp. The struggling receiver? Rookie WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, who dropped three passes in a single offense-only drill. The first came on a short pass right at him with DHB dropping the ball as he went to turn upfield. The other was on a deeper pass when he went up awkward and had it clank off both hands from in front of him. Raiders owner Al Davis, for one, noticed. Watching practice in a golf cart, he met with DHB and his position coach well after practice ended. Drops were the knock on DHB during college, and he's done nothing to dispute that reputation since the Raiders drafted him seventh overall.

The time is now to make up your mind about DHB and stick to your guns when it comes draft time. There is absolutely no doubt that he is going to put up excellent numbers at the combine and the love for him on these boards will rise accordingly based on his measurables. My eyes tell me he is a bust waiting to happen and regardless of how his measurables stack up I'm not planning to touch him unless he falls quite a bit. Troy Williamson v2.0.
Does he have hands like Williamson? I don't see how anyone could have hands like him (Willie Gault was close).
Chad Jackson v2.0 would be another good comparison for me. Below are some copied and pasted snippets I wrote about DHB back on 12/30/08 buried in EBF's top 12 Rookie Rankings thread.---------------------------So, just got done watching the Maryland bowl game from earlier today and came away unimpressed with Darius Heyward-Bay.I know he wasn't playing at 100% health, but he just doesn't seem very "smooth" to me and the injury has nothing to do with what I have an issue with in his game. He's not a natural hands catcher....instincts are to let the ball get into his body and when forced to catch with his hands seems to fight the ball a bit. He may be a burner, but this issue will catch up to him at the next level in my opinion. It actually reminds me a lot of when I was scouting Vernon Davis before the draft (just coincidence both are from Maryland) when everyone was all over his jock of what an NFL stud he would be and I had the exact same concerns with VD....off the chart workout numbers, but not a natural hands catcher and it would affect his upside at the next level. ---------------------------------A team will fall in love with his size and speed and pick him much earlier than he really should (much like they did with Vernon Davis).I'll believe it when I see it, but during the game they reported that coaches have timed DHB in the high 4.2's in the 40. If that happens he could go top 10 which would be a colassel mistake.I actually fell into the VD trap in one of my leagues even though deep down my eyes told me something wasn't right with his game and have regretted it ever since....not going to fall into the DHB trap this time.
<_<

My question is this. The kid was pick at 1.7 by the Raiders which was way too high. That's not his fault. He is under a microscope because of that. I looked back at my scouting reports from earlier this year and they all say "project" " questionable hands" " upside due to speed". My point is why is everyone so disappointed in this guy. He is doing just what many scouts said he would. Struggle early on.

I picked him in a 12 team 6 round IDP rookie draft at 2.1 which made him the 5th WR taken ( Crabtree, Maclin, Nicks, Harvin , DHB was the order). I think he may pan out for me. Not so much for the Raiders. I never saw him as a WR1 . I was hoping WR3 with some WR2 games.

History of 1st rd WR's drafted by Al Davis

1972 Mike Siani, WR, Villanova Round: 1 / Pick 21, Played 9 seasons

1985 Jessie Hester, WR, Florida State, Round: 1 / Pick 23, Played 11 seasons

1988 Tim Brown, WR, Notre Dame, Round: 1 / Pick: 6, Played 16 seasons, 9 pro bowls

2009 DHB, WR, Maryland, Round: 1 / Pick: 7, ?????????????????????

I'd say Al has drafted quality WRs in the 1st round. All WRs drafted by Al played atleast 9+ years in the league.
