With Goodell renewing talks about expanding the season, I was curious to see what other hardcore football fans think of this. I couldn't be more against it. It just exposes players to more injury risk and creates more trouble than it's worth. No matter what, you'll still have teams who have the playoffs locked up resting guys, and shortening the preseason is detrimental to building rosters and getting rookies live action reps.

Would like to hear some opinions ...

I'd prefer 0 to 2 games in the preseason and 16 games in the regular season. Obviously that won't happen, but I think the preseason is far too long. No other level of football needs such a preseason, why should the NFL? These guys can work year-round on stuff. Do the off-season training, have a scrimmage or two, and get on the battlefield.

Let me get this straight. You're against ADDING games to the season? Why do you hate America........ :fishing:

Yeah, who needs more football...
I'd think as a fellow Pats fan you'd recognize the unnecessary risk of extra games. Just playing deep into the playoffs every year for a team like the Pats or Colts or Chargers year-after-year takes it's toll, add an extra 2 games a year to that, no thanks ...

If the league can make more money by adding games while potentially paying the players the same amount, it's really not that difficult to figure out.

They went from 14 to 16 without a problem, and the game was harder hitting, with less protection rules back then. And, you heal faster today than you did in the 70's, thanks to modern medicine. If they add more games, they will allow more roster spots so you can back up any player who thinks it's an extra toll.

I see the points on both sides, but look at it this way...Would you be in favor of cutting back to 14 games?... that would definitely help cut the injury risk.

kind of stupid, but the first thing I always think about when they talk about messing with the number of games in any sport is the historical significance when in comes to records (single season, etc).....

You really think the NFLPA & their collective bargaining agreement is just going to roll over and accept that?I think this is going to either:A) make the renewal of the CBA much more difficult and drag it out, or it's B) a "red herring"..........something that Goodell has thrown out there so when they DO sit down to negotiate the new CBA, it's something that he can "conceed" and back down from to get closer to an actual agreement with continuing a 16 game schedule.

Peter King wrote recently about why he thought it was a abad idea .... namely, subjecting players to two more weeks of intense play, thereby increasing the chances of injury. He then went and listed all the injuries to date. However, his thinking is flawed in that non-serious injuries like a broken pinkie don't carry the same weight as say a torn ACL. Sure there's games missed w/ both injuries, but i think life after a broken pinkie won't be that difficult for Romo... im sure Jessica won't notice a difference :lmao: His whole beef is "look at all the injuries we've had already this year". However if you take out the less serious stuff like groin pulls, sprained ankles, pulled hammies but leave in the serious injuries like concussions, bulging discs, torn ACLs, broken bones (not pinkies), etc, how many more injuries are we talking about over a two week period?

I think your point B is a sound theory. And there is zero chance that they NFLPA would stand for an extension of games to 18 but not raise salary, essentially lowering every players per game salary by 11% (if my math is right :excited: ). They would strike in a heartbeat and I would 100% support it.

Fans are so worried about the millionaires getting hurt that they don't want more football? Really? Injuries are part of the game. Teams will learn how to manage it over a longer season. Teams who play even more because of the playoffs will have no trouble finding the motivation to play games 19-22.

The NFL makes a killing providing us with sports entertainment. If you're being offered more entertainment, why would you turn it down? That's like leaving before your favorite band's encore because you think they should get more rest for the next date.

Let them entertain us with more football.

16 for adding games, 17 for adding no games. Interesting. I bet most people would think a significant majority of fans would want extra games but apparently it's a dead heat here.

I'm in favor of:

2 less preseason games

2 more reg. season games

make sure all teams have 2 bye weeks for all teams for extra rest and recovery

add a couple roster spots

pay the players a little extra for the extra games (balance player/owner profits)

Everyone wins and we all enjoy a longer football season starting the beginning of Sept. w/ Superbowl at the end of February instead of the end of January.

Everyone wins.

uh....how does that work?and what's so special about the # 16?every change in every sport in the history of sports was greeted w/a thread like this.except when they didn't have computers -- then dudes just got together in the barber shop and #####ed.

I'd much prefer an NFL Game on Thursday night and Two MNF games each week rather then extending the season. NFL fans are rabid like soccer fans everywhere else. Our appetite is insatiable. At least try it out.

I do like the double header Monday night games with the 7pm and 10pm start times. I can always stay up to watch the end of the 1st games without falling asleep or being exhausted the next day, and depending on my interest level, usually can catch at least the 1st half of the late game.I'm not too keen on the Thursday night games. Work usually has me exhausted by late in the week, and Thursday nights are rough for me to be up late. I love the Saturday night games though! I'm well rested and no worries about getting up early for anything on Sunday morning!

As long as I have to buy 10 games at full price if I want to buy season tickets, then I'm going to want to see 10 games of real NFL football, and not preseason stuff.

I'm fine with converting 2 preseason games to 2 regular season games, so I'm at least getting 9 home games worth of football for my money.

against adding more games but another game would allow a 12 team FF league with 3 divisions to play a 14 week regular season and a 3 week playoff with no doubleheaders and no last week championship game when some players are given the week off.

Why is MNF different from a Thursday night game? For me an NFL game is an NFL game. The MNF festivity is gone for me. Gambling and fantasy drive the ratings anyways. You can never get enough.

i'm in favor of spreading the games out. in the age of being able to watch all the games, it'd be nice to be able to WATCH ALL THE GAMES.

+1 i don't care to see astericks next to the records. i will constantly be annoyed with sportsheads being sure to mention the rule change EVERY time they talk about some record. please no
