What high draft picks were you COMPLETELY wrong on? (1 Viewer)

comfortably numb

Footballguy
What top draft picks have you said would not miss, and not only did they not miss, but they could't even swing?

I will say I thought Tim Couch was gonna be a STUD.

P Manning was too easy, but I thought he would be a HOF

I thought LT would be a bust

Thought Harrington was gonna be a STUD

thought Carson Palmer would be a BUST

I knew Portis would be a STUD(not top pick) but I got that one.

Randy Moss as well.

What can you admit to?

Like a lot of the Philly fans, I thought in 1999 the Eagles would have been smarter to trade down with the Saints get all their draft picks and take the best available QB (which would have been Culpepper). In hindsight and after 4 NFC Championship/1 Superbowl appearance, I'm glad they took McNabb.

Be honest...Were you booing after Mcnabb's name was announced?

I haven't been very happy with very many of the Bears first round picks over the last 10-15 years.

The two I was dead wrong about being good were Alonzo Spellman and David Terrell. I thought both of them had the makings of All Pro caliber players.

The one I was wrong about being bad was Urlacher. From all the film they showed of him, there was no doubting his athletic ability. It was just a little worrisome to see them draft a Safety with intentions of turing him into a LB.

Jury is still out on Grossman, who I also wasn't thrilled about. But as long as he learns that every play does not have to gain yards, he'll end up being very good.

Me too. Based on what I saw when he was in college, I thought he had "it" - that element that separates great from average QBs.I also thought Kijana Carter was going to be a stud, though I'll plead "extenuating circumstances" for his injuries.I thought Lavar Arrington was the second coming of Lawrence Taylor (my PSU track record doesn't appear too good, does it?).

FWIWI thought this was a horrible pick for them, and though Grossman would never amount to much.

First to come to mind:

Randy Moss would flop

Ricky Williams would be a stud (that lasted)

Edgerrin James would bust

I didn't boo at the TV but I was disapointed they selected McNabb over Williams.

Perhaps I really had my homer (or domer) glasses on when I thought Lake Dawson and Derrick Mayes would be quality pro receivers.

Lake had a knee injury derail him and I can't remember if something similar befell Mayes. Both were great at Notre Dame and had a few moments in the NFL. Great guys too.

The Bad CEO said:
Penn State HomerKi-Jana Carter :bag: I remember STARTING these conversations, "He's going to be the man" and "The Bengals are going to be a real force this year"
I hate calling players that failed due to injury busts.

Clownshoes Jerry Porter among others. Scored a 28 on his wonderlic and lights out in workouts. Will I ever draft another primadonna or headcase. Nope. I'll stick with the Frank Gore's, Eli's and Greg Jenning's types.

mayes fooled with his athletic abilities. He had no drive to succeed and had a low tolerance for pain. Any little nick took him out of action. I was fortunate to pick Harrison right after Mayes got picked due to playing for GB.

There should really be some Snopes articles on Philly fans.Eagles fans in general weren't booing.Angelo Cataldi (Local radio guy) brought a bunch of goons to the draft for a pro-Ricky rally. They were pushing for Ricky and would have booed anyone else. Most of us fans realized our QB's sucked and we needed McNabb more then an RB with Duce there already.

I thought Justin Fargas was going to amount to something.

Also thought Tim Carter was going to end up as the #1 receiver on NYG due to his speed.

...and the biggest of all, I thought Fisher was going to find a way to channel Pacman Jones' intensity onto the field. :bag:

The jury is still out, but their deliberations may not last much longer:

Mike Williams - After watching him at USC, I really thought he could be an impact player. Right now all that's impacting is his large rear on the bench. :P

Thought Mike Williams (USC) was gonna be a stud - his hands are incredible for a man his size.

Apparently, his appetite > desire to be great.

Not only did we post the exact same time, with the exact same pick, we used the exact same humor.OUTTA MY HEAD, DEMON!

In 2004 when the Chargers had the #1 overall pick, I wanted them to take Robert Gallery. I thought he was going to be a stud left tackle.

You must be a genius. :D Most of the guys I get wrong are WRs - if I were an NFL GM I'd NEVER draft a WR in the first. I thought Peter Warrick was going to be a beast.

You weren't alone. :bag:

Who didn't think Gallery was the real deal? I wasn't among them, but lot of Chargers fans were pissed that they didn't take him instead taking Eli and trading him. I did think he was a "can't miss" LT though.

RIGHT ON BRO:

Frank Gore (so far) - thought he was a STEAL for the niners

Carson Palmer - Thought he would be an uber stud

Julian Peterson - Awesome player until achillies injury... thought he would be money.

Julius Jones - thought he would outperform many of the backs selected ahead of him

Not so much:

Jake Plummer - he's been OK but I really thought he could be Joe Montana II

Eli Manning - thought he would crumple under the weight of the Manning rep... I don't think he's great but he's not a bust yet.

Lawrence Phillips - thought he was something special... a special kind of headcase.

Jury Still out:

Alex Smith - think he can become a Drew Brees type QB.

Phil Rivers - Thought he would have a better career than Eli.

Ronnie Brown - Thought (and still think) he is the better of the two Auburn RB's and will become the next LT.

Charger fan here and I too was upset they were going to pass on Gallery for Eli. After watching the opener on Monday Night and watching Shawne Merriman (The man the Chargers essentailly got from the Ginats for the Eli trade) completely DOMINATE him, I feel much better about it now. I honestly thought Gallery was going to be the Orlando Pace/Jonathan Ogden/Willie Roaf type of dominant Left Tackle that would be around for years.

There's only one high pick who I had a very strong feeling that he'd be a bust - Cedric Benson.

Turns out that pick would have either been:Robert GalleryorPhilip Rivers, Shawne Merriman, Nate Kaeding, and Roman ObenThankfully AJ chose wisely. :D

giants fan:

i thought jerrod bunch would be a beast. though i did bet my friend $500 that mcnabb would be a better pro than tim couch. cha ching!!!

others-

right on:

tomlinson - thought he was the sickest in college and was going to be huge. bulls eye.

culpepper - always said he was overrated and wouldn't be sht without Moss

mcnabb - granted, i'm a syracuse fan, but i thought he'd dominate

shaun alexander - giants drafted ron dayne #11 that year. alexander went somewhere in the 20s. i cried.

brian westbrook - i went to Lehigh, and watched him tear us apart when he was at Nova. i knew he'd be special.

way off:

bettis - i still think he's the most overrated back ever, but i also realize i'm probably biased because i hate guys who get up and dance after every 4 yd carry

jbunch - injuries suck, but he really hit the wall

marvin harrison - as a syracuse fan, i thought he'd be a consistent pro, kind of like an amani toomer. never thought he'd be mentioned with the best ever.

penny hardaway - i thought he'd be the next magic johnson. what could have been....

Indeed. Even though AJ was two GMs behind them (Beathard and Butler) I guess that trade makes up for completely mortaging the future to move up one spot to get Ryan Leaf. :bag:

Peyton Manning - He never really impressed me in college and I just thought he was overhyped because of his dad.

Ryan Leaf - I actually liked him better than Peyton - WOW you just can not miss any further than that

Tim Cough - Just knew he was going to be a stud

Lawrence Phillips, Onterrio Smith, Ricky Williams - All had the potential and nothing, well Ricky did it for a season at least with Miami

Raghib Ismail, Desmond Howard, Charles Woodson... :wall:

I loved watching Plaxico at MSU, and knew he'd be an NFL playmaker.

Those first few years in Pittsburg were pretty ugly at times though (remember when he spiked a live ball?).

The thing i don't like about Burris' game though, is that he seems to make spectacular catches more regularly than he makes routine grabs.... another year or two in the league and i think he'll be over that though

STOP ITLEAVE ME ALONEDONT TALK TO ME

Thought Kordell Stewart was going to do great things for much longer than he did. Thought Brian Bosworth was the new style LB coming in. Thought Larry Johnson was a stud. Thought Ciatrick would be a stud. And despite his size, I thought K. Ratliff was going to be a great db.Also put me in with those who thought Leaf was the best QB.

I thought that coming out of college, Shaun Alexander looked like a slow-of-foot plodder, and would never amount to much. :bag:

Some people around here don't seem that enamored with his skill level, but I couldn't have been more wrong about the results.

I thought Troy Edwars was going to be a stud for the Steelers :bag:
:o You must be the ONE guy in the Burgh who thought that. I knew we were in trouble with that midget.A couple of my bad calls:I will admit to being one of the dumbasses who thought Ryan Leaf should be picked before Manning.I thought the Eagles screwed up by passing on Ricky.I thought Koren Robinson was going to be a stud.Good call:I said at the time that Randy Moss would be golden.
