What if the NFL loses all these lawsuits... (1 Viewer)

This collusion one is huge. I am not sure the $$ value on the concussion cases, but it seems like losing those could open the gates to even more cases afterward.

I understand the likely will not lose them all, but what if they did? How huge would the impact be on the league?

I don't think it threatens the game in terms of surviving but I can see it forcing so many changes in approach going forward, in the name of player safety, that we may look back in a decade and think this isn't anywhere close to the same game we remember.

Nothing, they have insurance to protect them and its a BILLION dollar league.
The players contend they lost $1 billion because of the secret salary cap; as stipulated by collectively-bargained language, such damages, if proved, would be automatically trebled to $3 billion.Read more: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/michael_mccann/05/23/nfl/index.html#ixzz1vtNzCifp

3 billion would be a blow to anyone, even the NFL

I am not saying it would crush it, but that's a lot of coin

then i hope the league just shuts down and lets the stupid players try to get it up and going again good luck maybe they can have the attorneys line up at wussbag and wide pansywaist and then they can have tim tebow throw passes at them while dwayne gabbert curls up ni the fetal position over in a corner it will be super great and then i hope that all the dbags who were so against goodall realize that he was right and all this im a thug its a mans game toughguys have to go back to dungeouns and dragons for fun bunch of nerds take that to the bank brohans

Bad math deleted. :bag:

It would be a double-edged sword for the players (current). They could rake in billions more, but the NFL will look to impose so many "safety" measures to protect its owners from future lawsuits that the players will feel like someone running around in a sumo-suit, and will then ##### about that. Be careful what you ask for!

Not a lawyer, but I think the collusion case has no hope of even making it into the bulk of the trial, let alone of being won. I imagine it'll be dismissed pretty quickly once it is being heard. I wouldn't even call it a small concern, let alone a huge one.The concussion case is the big issue. 2000-ish players already filing suit. If they were each awarded a meager $10k that would be $20 billion. That's the combined worth of the Cowboys, Redskins, Patriots, Giants, Jets, Texans, Eagles, Bears, Packers, Ravens, Colts, Broncos, Steelers, Dolphins, Panthers, Seahawks, and 49ers... the 16 most valuable franchises (by Forbes reckoning). And that would just be the start of the lawsuits from former players. Once they see they can make a buck they'll be lined up around the block.I'd hope the NFL has some insurance, but I don't know if even insurance would cover something if they are found to have been willfully negligent, or worse. The NFL should probably send a thank you letter to the NFLPA for protesting the requirement of wearing pads. That'll probably be a nice exhibit in the NFL's defense.
Might want to check your math there

Ack, you're right. Few too many zeroes. :bag:

If they lose $3 billion, hypothetically, they aren't losing cash. That number would most likely get added, split across 32 teams, to the salary cap the next few years. An already imaginary number would get bigger, and just like now, teams could decide to spend to that cap or not.

There's no "deciding" any more. The last CBA contained a hard salary floor. Teams now have to spend to 90 or 95% of the cap (I forget which). That's a big reason why teams like Carolina last year were throwing cartoon money at kickers and past-their-prime RBs- they were way under the cap, they had to spend the money on someone, and they decided the alternatives were even less useful.
