What is an "assisted tackle"? (1 Viewer)

I know the question sounds pretty obvious, but I am looking for an "official" explanation of when a player is credited with an assisted tackle. I know it is not an official NFL stat, but I figure someone has defined the stat somewhere.

Thanks

ETA - we have a league that is considering dropping points for assisted tackles. I am trying to show they have value. The perception in the league is that anyone who piles on will get credit for a tackle - so the stat is worthless.

Good question. Some teams don't list them very regularly. I have seen by players assist very well but not given an assist.

Piling on isn't an assist. Do they have any evidence where this ever is an assist? What do they have that proves their position?

Tell them sometimes when 2 players make the tackle 1 gets a solo and one assist but other times both get assists so they will eliminatihg some tackles.

Tackles (solos and assists) are not an official stat, as you noted, so every stadium's stat crew awards them differently. Some crews (STL, ATL) award assists extremely rarely, others award assists to the second player in on nearly every tackle. The only consistent aspect of assisted tackles is that, while two players may be given an assist (and no solo awarded) on a given play, there's no more than two players credited with an assist on a single play and never more than one assist when a solo tackle has already been awarded. There's probably some criteria for judging assisted tackles given to the stat crews, but I don't believe it's been made public and it's clearly applied differently by everyone anyway.

I'm not sure how you argue definitively that assisted tackles aren't a worthless stat. It's certainly not the case that every time a player piles on that they are credited with an assist. The argument that assists aren't an official stat won't wash -- you'd have to kill solo tackles and passes defended, too. The argument that assists are too inconsistently awarded across the league doesn't wash -- you'd have to kill passes defended, too. Assists and passes defended are part of the game. Teams award them (even more liberally) in their own books and they're an accepted part of most stat service boxscores, which is as strong an argument for their worth than anything else.

We need to have Cecil interview someone who scores solos/assist for a NFL team. :goodposting:
I never considered that, but that's a brilliant idea. Let me see if Cec has connections that can help us and see if we can't get this into one of our upcoming IDP Audible episodes.

Cool! Be nice to know why the NFL hasn't made these things official stats, and ... if they would consider scoring a force out as a PD.Thanks Jene

Jene, were you able to do any good with Cecil?
He's working on it. Bloom will be on an extended vacation through mid-July, so hopefully we'll have something for our pre-training camp episodes.
