What Is My Wood Worth? (1 Viewer)

I had 14 straight cedar trees in my backyard. The previous owner planted them 45 years ago about 2 feet apart. Which means I had 14 cedar poles basically. Approximately 40' tall each. They are perfectly straight.

They range from about 10" thick to 8" thick at the trunk and then taper to about 4" thick at the tip. They are now on the ground, as I cut them down today. They have all branches removed and are nice straight pieces.

I cut the long pieces in halves or thirds depending on how long they are. The minimum length of the wood is about 12'. The grain of the wood is seriously beautiful.

Thinking of putting the lot on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace for about $300 - buyer hauls them away.

What say you, ya' wood specialists?

Do you pay for wood in inches or feet?  Girth?    Don't you have to get all the moisture out of the wood before you sell it?    I know not the ways of wood buying.

I'd rethink $300. Some hard wood can be worth a whole lot of money.
Cedar is technically a softwood. ;)

(Which actually has nothing to do with how soft the wood is. It's just a description of the type of seed. Hardwoods have protected seeds, softwoods have exposed seeds.)

You'd get more than $300 from a sawmill.  You'd probably get close to double that.  Call the local sawmills and they'll send a guy out to look and see if they want them.  Let him make an offer on them and it'll be more than you expect is my bet.

I'm not sure they are large enough diameter.

Could be true.  Another option would be to cut them into 2 foot sections, rent a splitter and sell them as green firewood.  Firewood goes for $100/pickup box around here and cedar is usually higher.
