What is the highest scoring single season offense in NFL history? (1 Viewer)

The '07 Patriots scored 589 points, but 9 of those TDs were on defensive or special teams returns, so the offense actually scored 526 points. I am curious if the '98 Vikings offense scored more. They had 556 points, but I am not sure how many returns they had. Or what about that Redskins offense from the team that had 541 points?

Of the teams you listed . . .

98 MIN

58 offensive TD, 35 FG, 59 XP (so 1 non offensive TD)

83 WAS

59 offensive TD, 33 FG, 62 XP (so 3 non offensive TD)

07 NE

67 offensive TD, 21 FG, 74 XP (so 7 non offensive TD)

NE had 9 non offensive TDs. And those numbers are not adding up. Those Vikings numbers would give them 512 on offense, with the non offensive TD bumping it up to 518, but they scored 556, so those numbers you posted are not entirely accurate. Where did you get them from?

If you're only counting offense, are you going to include FG's and XPs, which are actually special teams?

That is a tough call, as in most cases, the offense moving the ball is what lead to the FGs and XPs being scored, but there are special cases, like two weeks ago when the Patriots blocked a Jets punt and recovered it at the 3. The offense got credit for the TD, but that was basically a special teams score. Things like that are why this kind of stat isn't that definitive.

Don't forget 2 pt conversions / blocked XP
There was no 2 pt conversion for the 83 Redskins. 98 Vikings had three 2pt conversions, it wouldn't make up the difference between them & the 07 Pats. Vikings had 0 blocked XP & Pats had 0 blocked XP. So 07 Pats = highest scoring offense.

Pats had 50 passing TD and 17 rushing TD. Yahoo has them down for 6 defensive TD and 1 return TD.

Non-offensive TD's for Vikings. 3 INT returns for TD, 2 Fumble Recoveries for TD, 0 Punt Returns for TD, 1 Kick Return for TD. From http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/min/1998.htm No Safeties.

I forgot to add in 2 point conversion attempts, but it does look like the Vikes had 6 return TDs that year but definitely 58 offensive TD.

That is not right. From looking at all of their game recaps, the Patriots had the following defensive or special teams scores:-Ellis Hobbs 108 Yd Kickoff Return (against the Jets in week 1)-Adalius Thomas 65 Yd Interception Return (against the Chargers in week 2)-Randall Gay 15 Yd Fumble Return (against the Browns in week 5)-Willie Andrews 77 Yd Kickoff Return (against the Dolphins in week 7)-Rosevelt Colvin 11 Yd Fumble Return (against the Redskins in week 8)-Ellis Hobbs 35 Yd Fumble Return (against the Bills in week 11)-Asante Samuel 40 Yd Interception Return (against the Eagles in week 12)-Eugene Wilson 5 Yd Interception Return (against the Jets in week 15)Okay, so it was not 9 like I thought or 7 like you thought. We both got wrong info. The numbers still do not add up, though...

If I can get this to format right, here is the scoring breakdown the Boston Globe has . . .

1998 Vikings:58 Offensive TD's (348)

35 FG's (105)

59 XP (59)

3 two point conversions (6)

Total Offensive Points: 518

6 Non-offensive TD's: (36)

Total: 554 (2 points missing from pro-football-reference. They report 0 Safeties but they could've had one to make up the difference of 2).

2007 Pats:

67 Offensive TD's (402)

21 FG's (63)

74 XP (74)

1 two point conversion (2)

Total Offensive Points: 541

8 Non-offensive TD's: (48)

Total: 589

Okay, that helps. So, unless that Redskins scored all 541 of their points on offense, then the Patriots are the highest scoring single offense in NFL history. Question answered.
